AIBU to be quietly flipping out at receiving a read once /disappearing message

I received a what’s app message from DP that I had to click on to open and had gone when I went back to look at it. Instead it just said ‘opened’ where the message should be.

How easy is it to accidentally switch on this feature?

Could this be innocent?

It’s not a feature he uses and he is saying he doesn’t know how it happened.

It was just a text and emojis, I think. I read it on the hoof and didn’t pay too much mind to it until I looked back.

I’m now tying myself in knots feeling sick thinking he had switched on once messages to send things he shouldn’t to someone he shouldn’t.

Ignoring the obvious trust issue, could this be a genuine error? Or would I be a mug to believe that?

I have turned this on numerous times when I haven't meant to. It is very annoying!

Just message him and ask him to send it again.

Musicofthespiers · 31/10/2024 13:39

It is very easy to do accidentally on WhatsApp. I did it to DH the other day, just caught the button.

Frozensnow · 31/10/2024 13:39

Really easy, I did it with a photo the other day. Couldn’t work out what I’d done for a while!

BlondeFool · 31/10/2024 13:39

I've done it a few times by accident with texts and pictures. I think it's an easy mistake in WhatsApp.

TimeForTeaAndG · 31/10/2024 13:40

It's easily done. I've done it loads and I managed to change the speed setting on voice notes without realising.

ShilohTikva · 31/10/2024 13:40

Extremely easily done I've done it so many times it's annoying. My partner has too

Swivelhead · 31/10/2024 13:41

Has your husband done anything before to make you so suspicious based on some little phone app glitch? Seems a hell of an overreaction

Minefield2468 · 31/10/2024 13:41

Thank you all so much!!

I’m glad I’ve not gone on full sulk mode and will give my head a wobble!

I do it accidentally on photos at least once a week

RossGellersCat · 31/10/2024 13:43

On my android phone the "read once" icon ia literally next to the send button, so this has caught me out several times!

Barrenfieldoffucks · 31/10/2024 13:43

Me too, drives me bonkers

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 31/10/2024 14:40

Easily done. Been there, done that.

ItGhoul · 31/10/2024 14:42

It's an easy thing to switch on by mistake.

It's a bit worrying that your immediate assumption was that your partner is having an affair.

QforCucumber · 31/10/2024 14:57

its not an on or off thing, you select it for the individual message you are sending in that moment. I've done it by accident so many bloody times!

LavenderFields7 · 31/10/2024 15:15

But don’t you have to do the following:

  1. Open a chat
  2. Tap the contact's name
  3. Tap More options
  4. Tap Disappearing messages
  5. Select a duration under Message timer
  6. Tap Green checkmark
  7. Tap Done

That seems like a lot of steps to do by accident!

Nope!

It's literally a small icon next to the send icon - I have tapped it multiple times by accident (fat thumb syndrome!)

I don’t have that icon on my WhatsApp. I have a totally different icon in the same place.

comedycentral · 31/10/2024 15:57

Yes!!! It's easy to do and so annoying, makes me feel so dodgy.

It maybe depends on your phone type/settings because I’ve just looked at my Whatsapp and that isn’t there on mine. I’ve just tried to do it and have to do all the steps in the previous posters walk through.

Waterboatlass · 31/10/2024 16:00

I do it all the time by accident with photos

Anotherparkingthread · 31/10/2024 16:05

I press it all the time. Usually only when sending a photo or audio recording I've never pressed it by mistake on text, not even sure if you can tbh. Might be a new update feature which is why some don't have it and your DH is prone to pressing it by mistake!

RainbowCrayons · 31/10/2024 16:17

My mum always does this. I get a disappearing message and it turns out it’s just the pie she baked or something. Anyone looking at my phone would think it was much more interesting!

pecanroll · 31/10/2024 16:33

I have accidentally done it a few times! Really easy to do, it's next to the send button. Don't panic!

Unbelooth · 31/10/2024 16:34

I didn't know about this, but it now explains a message that I sent that I can't see any more!

OchAyeTheN00 · 31/10/2024 16:37

Yes a very easy accident.
