To worry about sweets from trick or treating…

Just had a horrible thought… when we go trick or treating, what if we are given dodgy sweets? I mean I know it isn’t likely but unless you know everyone you go to, how can you guarantee they aren’t giving your kid drugs?! Does this worry anyone else?!

How many did they eat before you realised?
Where did they get them from?
Presumably you had to take them to hospital?

3luckystars · 29/10/2024 22:54

Drugs are much cheaper now than when I was growing up. I remember Es being £30.

First dibs!

I might have to check them all to be sure 😂

Birdscratch · 29/10/2024 22:54

This is why I thoroughly test all the sweets.

It's almost like it's... Not begging, isn't it.

Every. Single. Year with the 'begging' 🤦‍♀️

So anyone who asks anyone for anything at all is a beggar according to these people?

While it doesn't seem very likely to me, we only ever offer sweats in sealed commercially available packaging (Haribo mini bags, Cadburys treat sizes).

The children in our village tend only to visit families they know. Only when I got to know some of the parents and then told them we were ready for visitors but no one seemed to ring our bell , did we get included.

3luckystars · 29/10/2024 22:56

It’s beggars belief.

30percent · 29/10/2024 22:56

Some harsh replies here, I've heard a few stories of things like this happening so it's easy to see how someone already anxious would get worked up by it.
However it's extremely unlikely to happen.
I'm a miserable old female dog kinda like willy Wonka's dentist dad vibes more apprehensive about the inhalation of a huge pot of sweets then anything else

I think they genuinely think it's a funny, smart comment. But I must be into double figures for this year alone so it's certainly not original anyway.

Yeah, so when they ask their DH to make them a cup of tea, it's not asking, it's begging? 👀

Of course she didn’t take them to the hospital.

This is @Pureasthedrivensnowww’s kid now.

Why would you take your children to houses where you think that would be a possibility? Do you live in a very dodgy neighborhood?

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 29/10/2024 23:00

Drugs is highly unlikely, but I wouldn't put it past some people to tamper with/misrepresent them in other ways - coating Brussels sprouts in chocolate or injecting the loose sweets with laxatives/fart powder or whatever - either because they think it's funny or otherwise are annoyed at being disturbed and expected to hand out free goodies to all comers.

It's the risk you take if you go knocking on strangers' doors and asking for sweets, I suppose.

Quite aside from the drugs issue, as the parent of a child with allergies thank you for this. Something we can easily identify is really helpful, and packets can be washed down if a handful of monkey nuts inadvertantly end up in the bag!

So uncouth. No manners at all.

There's a clear difference between favours for someone you live with and often reciprocates favours and just asking strangers to give you sweets for nothing

Edited

I thought people only went to houses that had pumpkins outside or decorated. That's what happens where I live.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 29/10/2024 23:05

Well, you could see if you were. Although they look like real sweets, they have weird names. If you let your kids scoff as they go and don't check, I suppose there's a chance they'd eat some.

If your children are old enough to go alone, warn them of what they look like.

Differentstarts · 29/10/2024 23:05

It's a very small risk, your kids more likely to get hit by a car while trick or treating. If you worry about every little risk you wouldn't do anything. However I do always check the kids sweets before they eat them and anything not in packaging will get thrown

JaceLancs · 29/10/2024 23:06

I only offer sealed packages eg mini haribo - Cadbury treat size etc, I also have a big jar of coppers and give a handful to any children who don’t want or can’t eat the treats on offer
I I have so many allergies myself I try to include everyone

A bit like kids speaking to strange old men at Christmas and telling them they’ll be good in return for presents (at least they don’t sit on his knee any more) 😆😆😆

I've always wondered why an old fat man unloading his sack at the bottom of your bed while you sleep is perfectly acceptable...🤣🤣🤣
