To worry about sweets from trick or treating…

Backtoblack87 · 29/10/2024 22:38

Just had a horrible thought… when we go trick or treating, what if we are given dodgy sweets? I mean I know it isn’t likely but unless you know everyone you go to, how can you guarantee they aren’t giving your kid drugs?! Does this worry anyone else?!

Have you heard first hand of something like this happening or seen random Facebook posts that people make up for shares?

You realise they quite literally give warnings about this in primary schools? My rule of thumb would just be to only eat sweets in a wrapper which is mostly what's handed out on Halloween definitely don't eat cakes especially brownies.

Not Halloween related but I knew someone who fed her dog and little sister weed brownies because she thought it was funny. There's about 8 billion people in the world some of which are very fucked up and you have a hard time believing things like this happe? Btw I'm not saying it would stop me taking the kids trick or treating or make me sit at home shitting myself. Just be sensible

NerrSnerr · 31/10/2024 08:32

@30percent certainly not all primary schools. I'd still like to know if you've actually heard of any first hand stories of drugs in trick or treat sweets?

I have had a quick Google, there are a couple of articles warning of it from the USA, one guy who gave bags of cocaine instead of sweets by accident and lots of stuff about how tampering with Halloween sweets is an urban legend

itsjustbiology · 31/10/2024 08:41

Hi OP I do trick or treat sweets...the trick if chosen are chocolate covered sprouts! The treats are haribos and individually wrapped lollies. The trick choice is explained and are only offered to the tweens and above. The treats are offered to the tots upwards and their parents! Gotta keep the mums and dads fuelled too! I wouldnt worry too much it is a celebratory event no one surely wants to cause any little ones any upset. Lets all celebrate and have fun!

My child's school send out a leaflet about it every year before Halloween.
Ooh you had a quick Google and read some stories online about it being an urban legend but you mock the op for reading the opposite online 🤔

Surely it's just common sense to only eat the wrapped sweets and not things that are opened or clearly tampered with. Yes it's extremely rare that something like that will happen I acknowledge that but acting like the op is neurotic for being concerned is just daft.

And the girl who fed her little sister (an actual young child) weed brownies also used to joke about doing it at Halloween for trick or treaters. You don't see how there's weird people out there who find stuff like that hilarious?

NerrSnerr · 31/10/2024 08:50

@30percent where have I mocked anyone?

The OP didn't say she read anything online, she just had a thought. If she had read the opposite online I'd be interested to see because I can't find much.

If people were actually giving out drugs in Halloween sweets then it would make the news wouldn't it? The Wikipedia page says there have been two reported cases of tampering of Halloween things- worldwide. There's of course probably been more but nothing worthy of any big news articles. If it happened regularly over here there'd be articles about it.

I didn't say that I let my kids eat any old shit- everyone round here gives wrapped sweets anyway.

The only reason I replied to you was because you said that you'd heard of it happening and if you did have first hand experience then it's worth sharing isn't it?

SunnyHappyPeople · 31/10/2024 08:56

Stichintime · 29/10/2024 22:41

Highly unlikely, but if you're worried try one first. If you start being sleepy, hallucinating or have any other strange feelings don't give them to the kids.

😂

I never said I had first hand experience other than the story about the girl and the weed brownies which I've already mentioned.

What exactly are you arguing then because I've said it's extremely rare and wouldn't stop me taking my kids trick or treating so we're in aggreance or do you just like arguing for the sake of it?

NerrSnerr · 31/10/2024 09:03

@30percent I was just curious about the 'few stories' you said you'd heard. You've been an equally argumentative as well (as well as saying that I mocked the OP which was clearly just made up).

chaosmaker · 31/10/2024 20:55

@Backtoblack87 just don't take your kids begging, no problems then

Sidebeforeself · 31/10/2024 21:05

Christ! I ate some Halloween sweets about an hour ago and now I cant stop hallucinating!! Im seeing witches, ghosts, ….the lot! They are walking up and down my street and knocking on doors. Someone help!

Quick! Grab a pen and pad and start writing song lyrics. Next year’s Halloween hit starts now. Pop makers writing songs whilst tripping is a tradition.

I’m on a Haribo High. I taxed some of my son’s loot and now I am high on sugar and unable to sleep. Im
too old for this crap. I should’ve known better.

Well I've spent the last hour injecting jelly babies with crystal meth, so the OP is clearly on to something here.

🤣🤣

Bibi12 · 01/11/2024 23:16

There were cases of nails found in Halloween candies. Very unlikely tho.

Where, and first hand reports?

FruityShampoo · 02/11/2024 21:12

Has anyone tried going up to some of the junkies or drug dealers in the town centre, saying “trick or treat” and seeing if you get anything other than your arse kicked/stabbed?

MildGreenDairyLiquid · 02/11/2024 22:19

I knew someone who was trick or treating and was given weapons grade plutonium in a fun sized Mars Bar wrapper. True story.

Bibi12 · 03/11/2024 00:54

Jammedchakra · 02/11/2024 15:38

Where, and first hand reports?

Most cases in Canada and United States. That's because they are big countries where Halloween is popular, not because it can't happen somewhere else.

Mama2many73 · 03/11/2024 01:39

AngryBookworm · 29/10/2024 22:42

Why would they give them drugs? It's the most ridiculous urban myth. If I were a drug dealer what possible incentive would I have to give away my stash, for free, to children?

Firstly no, personally I've not worried about it but I'd only take kids where I knew people.
Secondly watching morning live the other day and they were talking about safety when out on halloween.
Rav ex policeman actually talked about it, said it was very rare but has happened and if concerned check over the sweets first.
Think if it was an urban myth he would have stated that.

Evidence?

Ch0cDr0p · 03/11/2024 11:20

It's not beyond the realms of imagination that a disgruntled neighbour may mess on with sweets! People lace dog treats with poison, they walk among us!

This happened in County Durham. How many of you who ridiculed OP and said 'she's not coming back' will come back and apologise?! Oh wait, prediction coming through, "this isn't the same coz the sweets aren't laced and are obviously not right".

It's not an Urban Myth, you are right Mama

I would have look again, copy and paste every reported case. I will only do a few recent ones.

If you look up articles about halloween sweets tampering they all dismiss it as urban myth. That's because reported cases are rare and difficult to investigate and prosecute. How do you remember which house it came from? How do you prove its not manufacturing issue?

However police in States and Canada deal with those cases and even warn parents to check the bags before giving them to kids.

People can be awful. There are psychopaths and sadists capable of worst things yet people want to believe it could never happen.

Personally I'm not worried about Halloween sweets because we live in very safe area and people know each other. I also think those cases are very rare. However, I'm not naive enough to think it could never happen or that it's just an urban myth.

Should have gone for acrylics rather than stick ons.
