To ask where all the Taramasalata has gone?

Just that.

Not a single supermarket near me has any, Tescos said out for 3 weeks in every branch for 50 miles and no expected in date.

Really fancied some for lunch 🤨

Who had eaten it all?

Gosh, this has made me very nostalgic. My late mum absolutely loved taramasalata! I haven't eaten it in years.

SauvignonBlanche · 27/10/2024 12:49

I’ve been looking all over for it!

None in Sainsburys or Waitrose so I tried Asda, to no avail.

I found some in Lidl last week.

I have no idea what this is

Salted Cod (or Carp or Grey Mullet) roe, blended with onion, lemon juice and olive oil, often with breadcrumbs.

It's an extra savoury dip, frequently a pretty pink from a touch of beetroot - and absolutely delicious.

Sunset6 · 27/10/2024 12:52

Brexit to blame, surely 😉

It’s a blessing. Keep it that way.

cheezncrackers · 27/10/2024 12:55

There are still a lot of grocery shortages, IME. It was particularly bad during/just after Covid, but it hasn't totally gone away. My favourite chewing gum has been out of stock in Sainsburys for weeks and they don't sell it anywhere else, so it's driving me insane. The GF pitas I like are often out of stock too, although atm they have them. It seems when things go out of stock though they can stay out of stock for ages. It's very frustrating.

Livinginaclock · 27/10/2024 12:55

I want some now and my local Tesco, Co op and Morrisons are out of stock.
Damn you OP!

thenightsky · 27/10/2024 12:58

Its perhaps gone to the same mysterious place that Tesco own brand salted butter has gone. Not seen that in months either.

ForPearlViper · 27/10/2024 12:59

I've noticed over the last few years random things keep disappearing from the supermarket for a few weeks. I've just bought six jars of a very standard product I like from a specific supermarket because prior to that it had disappeared for several months. So when it reappeared (20% more expensive, I stocked up).

Fashions in foods also change and then all the supermarkets jump on the bandwagon. I used to buy mustard mayonnaise. Completely disappeared but you can buy truffle mayo, sriracha mayo and a whole range of mayos that sound like complete abominations. Not a biggie, you can just mix mustard and mayo, and clearly it just fell out of popularity. But it would be helpful if we could have some media articles on the trends, like we do with clothes, to know if we should be stocking up!

I'm guessing that one will also reappear with a 'new' label and 20% more expensive!

Any recommendations for nice taramasalata? I only like the Waitrose version. I can taste the breadcrumbs from n the Sainsbury, M&S etc brands which I don’t like. Waitrose used to have the highest % of fish but they’ve recently changed.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/10/2024 13:10

Ocado seem to have it in stock but the most recent reviews are terrible. Now I've been reminded about taramasalata I may have to make a special trip to Waitrose. Love it once in a way.

I have always avoided it under the belief that food should not be pink. As a result of your thread I just googled it. I had no idea it was made from roe, urgh!

Hope you find some soon!

Roe=eggs, which I presume you eat?

Bluetrews25 · 27/10/2024 13:14

Bloody love taramasalata
Asda had some yesterday, but I didn't buy any.
Look to see if they have it practically every visit after what felt like a year of looking for it and not finding it.
Is it seasonal?
Do fish lay eggs all year round?

AdaColeman · 27/10/2024 13:16

Oh I love taramasalata, you've sent me off on a search for it now OP!
Re the no pink food, what about salmon or prawns? You're missing out on a lot of delicious foods.
At one time I had a beautiful green and pink dinner service, and I used to do entire three course meals of only green and pink food, taramasalata often featured.

BunnyLake · 27/10/2024 13:19

Year’s ago I used to be addicted to that stuff. Then after trying some about 25 years later I was shocked I ever liked it. My taste buds must have changed massively between my twenties and fifties.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/10/2024 13:19

Did anyone else ever go to Jimmy's in Frith Street? Very, very old school Greek/Cypriot restaurant in a basement. We went first as students in the early 80s. Standard starter was a saucer of hummus and a saucer of taramasalata, plus lots of piping hot pitta bread. All very exotic at the time. Main course was moussaka with potatoes in it as well as aubergine and lots of chips on the side. We'd wash this down with retsina and end with baklava and Greek coffee. The waiters were all elderly men in white jackets and it was incredibly cheap. Happy memories!

Onlyonekenobe · 27/10/2024 13:21

Well this thread has prompted me to look up a recipe, and seems it’s easier to make than hummus - which is dead easy! Just have to find somewhere that sells roe 🤔

What, not even blancmange lol. Part of my childhood that was 🤢

I love prawns, especially in garlic and herb butter. That’s a pink food heaven to me.

Livinginaclock · 27/10/2024 13:25

I'm going to go to Waitrose later this week, they're few and far between in Scotland but I need some taramasalata, (not tarantulas, thank you auto correct), and also Mrs Elswood Haimisha pickles, which are the best pickles ever.

Julen7 · 27/10/2024 13:36

Asda have it (or they did a week ago) but I don’t like Asda’s Taramasalata

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 27/10/2024 13:37

M&S always have it.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 27/10/2024 13:39

Mmm, I haven't seen the stuff for years come to think of it.
A related question: why has the quality of supermarket humus gone down so much, except the brand I don't want to buy? It's all watery and sweet now.

Ariela · 27/10/2024 13:45

Is it out of season, being made with cod roe?

DirlingWhervish · 27/10/2024 13:52

I was thinking this the other day! Had almost forgotten about it and DH brought some home from a shop we don't often frequent!

Lovely with sliced tomatoes in a pitta.

Never on the shelves in my usual supermarkets Sad
