What are you doing with the extra hour tonight?

It’s that time of year again! The clocks are going back an hour at 2am, so we all get an “extra” hour tonight. Are you planning to make the most of it with a lie-in, or maybe use it productively?

Are you working, sleeping, catching up on something, or doing something you wouldn’t normally have time for?

Would love to hear everyone’s plans for the bonus time!

I have a 3-year old, so watching Mighty Monster Wheelies for an extra hour I imagine 🥲

Exactly the same right here!😫

I have children who haven’t grasped the concept. They’ll get up at what is, to their body clock, 6:30am, as usual. They’ll adjust over a few days, as will I. There will be no “extra hour” in this household!

Same. This thread just alerted me to clocks changing. My little one in bed early and woke at 545 today

Plasmodesmata · 26/10/2024 21:00

One year I saved the extra hour until Monday morning. Didn't change any clocks all Sunday. Alarm went off Monday morning - that's when I took my extra hour. This was back in the olden days before all the devices just update themselves, wouldn't be easy to do now.

GoldenLegend · 26/10/2024 21:00

Sleeping. That's what it's for.

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 26/10/2024 21:01

Sleeping off the extra wine im drinking. I’ll still be getting up at the normal time, but I’ll have a bonus hour included in my normal nights sleep

Crucible · 26/10/2024 21:02

I'm in bed now. Just getting settled in. Extra early night for the best night of the year with the extra hour. My dogs will be confused tomorrow. The SAD light came out of the loft today, for DH, and I have wrapped all Christmas gifts that have already arrived. Also done some ironing and sorting of pillowcases today, my bed linen is ancient. I'm shattered.

ThePinkFrenchFancyPlease · 26/10/2024 21:04

This year I’ll be sleeping because I’m unwell, but usually I try to get up after my normal hours of sleep, and do something tangible with my extra hour - whether that’s cooking a frozen pastry or some pancakes for breakfast, starting a jigsaw or reading my book, or going for a lovely walk if it’s a fine day.

lifebyfaith · 26/10/2024 21:04

Ddog will be up wanting her walk at whatever time so it will be an hour earlier for us.

Mum2jenny · 26/10/2024 21:04

Sleep, with a bit of luck!!

ThinWomansBrain · 26/10/2024 21:05

cats do not understand the concept of clocks changing - she will start telling me it's time for breakfast at 3am instead of 4.
It will take her a couple of weeks to adjust.

itzthTtimeGib · 26/10/2024 21:05

Rocking backwards and forwards somewhere with my 2 kids under 2…

user1471453601 · 26/10/2024 21:06

You do understand, I'm sure the time itself doesn't cannot be changed by humans? It's just the way we measure it that changes. So what you think you "gain" tonight you "loose" tomorrow.

But crack on, if you really think you'll gain tonight.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 26/10/2024 21:06

Getting up early to drive to Eryri with DH for a long walk up a mountain!

ghostofadog · 26/10/2024 21:08

I'm going to save mine till tomorrow, early evening when I've got Sunday night feeling and thinking that the weekend has gone to quick, I will grant myself an extra hour to read a book and drink some wine 🙂I really appreciate it now my kids are older, when they were younger it was so disappointing to hope for an extra hour in bed then the kids just wake up at 4.30 instead if 5.30.

Zanatdy · 26/10/2024 21:09

I sleep badly anyway, so doubt ill have a lie in. No plans to do anything in particular, just to enjoy my day of rest

SantaToSSD · 26/10/2024 21:09

God, I remember the days with young children when the extra hour just meant being woken at 5.30 instead of 6.30. Commiserations to all parents of young children but rest assured you will one day get your extra hour back.

I'm going to spend mine hopefully getting a much needed extra hour of sleep, then getting Sunday lunch ready at a reasonable time instead of, as often happens, eating it halfway through the afternoon.

ilovesushi · 26/10/2024 21:10

I'll get up early tomorrow and boringly I'm using it for cleaning. Have two lots of guests coming around and need to whizz around with the hoover.

samarrange · 26/10/2024 21:10

We will be staying up because DS/DDIL are about to become parents, so hopefully in an hour or two we will be breaking out the champagne here. We're getting a blow-by-blow, dilations and all, on WhatsApp because we're several hundred miles from them.

GrandTheftWalrus · 26/10/2024 21:10

When i was young in my clubbing days I used to love going out when the clocks went back as the club closed at 3am so it was open an extra hour.

Now it'll be getting up an hour earlier with the DDs

VioletCrawleyForever · 26/10/2024 21:11

I'm camping with scouts and hope it means an extra hour of sleep in the morning.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 26/10/2024 21:13

I’m going to visit my son and DIL in the morning to meet their new arrival 🐈‍⬛.

CandidHedgehog · 26/10/2024 21:14

I won’t really notice. I wake up any time between 7 and 10 on the weekends (obviously no young children) so it will just mean waking closer to 7 than 10.

Maria1982 · 26/10/2024 21:14

Yeah, I have a toddler so there is no extra hour here. I’m dreading the early wake tbh

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 26/10/2024 21:18

I worked 10 hour night shifts many moons ago in the Met Office and hated being on shift when the autumn clocks changed. An extra hour to work, and weather observations to do at 2! 2 ams 🕑 was very confusing 🫤.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/10/2024 21:19

Going to bed early because I have a long drive to an open day tomorrow. Excellent timing, in my opinion!
