Just that really. To do so well with finances for nearly a month then get an unexpected expense out of left field, pretending that lentil dahl is absolutely delicious, to have signed up to do surveys on YouGov and the rest and have made sod all, can't work any more hours, can't cut costs any more, can't claim anything off the state and to be kicking myself for not saving more when I had the chance. Just a moan really.

I never wanted to be that kind of miserable gît that resents every penny or knows, "The cost of everything but the value of nothing" But that's the way the value brand cookie is not crumbling right now.

Perhaps a bit woo but sometimes I wonder whether a real poverty mindset becomes a self fulfilling prophecy and perhaps a more speculate to accumulate mentality might do me better? Not any manifesting flapdoodle but just an idle thought.

Dhal is basically boiled lentils with a tin of tomatoes and curry powder. It's not the best. At least not in the cheapskate version.

How are you making it? It can be delicious.

I add mushrooms and a lot of dried herbs:

Even cheaper use your library if you have one.

The city where I live is planning to close four local libraries to save money. As always, cuts affect people who are already struggling. And of course our council tax will be increased by the maximum amount allowed, so we pay more and get even less.

I try and freeze just about anything I can to ensure it has a longer life. This morning I sliced a couple of leeks (70p) and bagged them up for the freezer and also a bag of thyme (52p). They’ll last a while with no waste and really add flavour to otherwise simple dishes.

You can also regrow spring onions. Just put the stalk bits in a glass of water and they will grow. I have money, but I do things like this anyway.

Adding a stock cube and using a tin of coconut milk in the dhal can really make it quite tasty.

FFS coconut milk is at least a pound.

Can people not post simple tips without being sworn at? Maybe someone has coconut milk at home already.

That’s really handy to know, thanks. I’ve got a couple of them in my fridge, I’ll try it out 👍

Just make sure to change the water every couple of days!

Op, please google food clubs near you. They don't require any referral and I found a lot of the time they have treats you can get as well. The one I go to is in a domestic abuse charity.

Tesco own brand is 79p. It’s not a staple but I do occasionally have it (always the unbranded). I think it can be frozen as well so could be used for several dishes. If someone wants coconut milk that is.

It can be frozen. Sometimes they sell huge ones cheap, and you can just freeze. So a good tip.

Unfortunately, I fear it’ll get worse on Wednesday after the budget. Brace for impact…

Well they have said they won't hammer working people. Hopefully it will just be the buy to let landlords and those with a lot of assets that will be hit. I guess we will have to wait and see !

DS1 loves dhal. It's his favourite food. But when he worked out in Nepal as a volunteer for six weeks and ate only dhal twice a day he grew sick of it. The OP's point is that poverty reduces choice. You can't tart up dhal with some fried slivers of garlic and toasted cumin seeds and fresh chopped chilli and coriander if all you can afford is the lentils. And you don't want to eat boiled lentils several times a week when you are surrounded by adverts and shoppers and co workers eating a wide variety of foods you love and can't afford.

Yes I know. That’s what I said isn’t it?

Even cheaper use your library if you have one.

And if you can actually get there during the limited hours that it's open (less than 3.5 days a week where I live), and if it actually has anything worth reading that you haven't already read.

New books were out in paperback and discounted in Waterstones long before you'd get to the top of the list for the one or two copies they'd bought for the entire sodding county

If you live near an eastern European shop it would be worth a visit. Some of the stuff they sell is far cheaper than the local supermarkets. It can also be a break from the monotony of same stuff all the time.

Lentilweaver · 27/10/2024 13:55

I don't think this is a thread for tips.

CountessWindyBottom · 27/10/2024 13:56

I'm so sorry that your are finding things so hard. Please do consider accessing a foodbank if you're struggling this much. It may just take the pressure of a little.

To where exactly?

Anywhere. Don't you know that the UK is the worst place ever, and that emigrating will change your life for the better, guaranteed?

According to too many folk here. Sigh.

Ok, this sounds woo-woo, but when I was having a difficult time, I wrote down a list of what I needed…financial security, a better job, a proper doctor to see me through some health issues. I thought about happy memories for a while till I felt more upbeat. I then unplugged the phone, pretended I was calling the universe, and just asked for those things…didn’t prescribe how they would happen, but that they would happen. Over the process of a couple years, all those things came true. Tosha Silver writes about this process in a book called Outrageous Openness, and although it isn’t scientific, it worked for me.

I hope things get better and easier for you soon.

Palestinians, you know what to do! Forget the Prophet and phone the universe!

What a pile of insulting rubbish your post is.

OP didn’t seem to mind it.

And what do the Palestinians have to do with anything? Have you posted on the wrong thread?

Palestinians, you know what to do! Forget the Prophet and phone the universe!

What a pile of insulting rubbish your post is.

It was in response to a query from a poster about this very issue and process with regard to poverty in the UK. I said this process worked for me when I was in food poverty myself and had some bad health issues. No insults intended, and I’m not entirely sure how Palestine features into this. I never implied that this was a process for war refugees or victims of genocide that was a panacea. I don’t recall saying that no aid should be given to war refugees and people should just pray for it. I also don’t recall saying that no help should be given to those in poverty in the UK and they should just pray for it. If that was your implication that I thought that, then that is fairly insulting in itself.

Some people pray to a deity or the universe to ask for help, and I don’t find that insulting or problematic either. Maybe it gives some comfort. It gave me some comfort and I felt better, and when I felt better, I felt more proactive. When I was more proactive, better things came my way and I expected them to do so. But that’s just me. I’m sorry if you find prayer insulting or this upsets your religious beliefs in some way.

been out for a walk ( free ) and now we are bickering about a tin of coconut milk.

OP the Gods have not been kind to me. Despite the walking and the teaspoon of dahl a week, I still have various random body parts that belong to other people, sort of strung together somehow.
