To think it's cruel to enter your child for nine 11+ exams?

Seen the news article about the child from Isle of Wight who passed nine 11+ exams in various counties all over the country. I think it's unkind to put a child through that. Yes, he's a bright boy, but what are the parents thinking? And no, I dont know them personally. (Runs for cover)

I think this poster means the out of towns raise the pass mark so that local children who would’ve otherwise passed and been deemed selective don’t reach that standard

The pass mark is the same in Bucks every year at 121. It’s a straight pass/fail system.

Nothing strange about it. Our DD prepared for three years before sitting the 11+. We are in NI. She was in the top ten per cent of pupils who sat it.

Three years! That's a bit much. I'm in grammar school area and 1 year is the norm with some pushy parents doing 2.
I haven't found the grammar school particularly better for the kids of mine that went of the kids that didn't.

Blarn · 27/10/2024 08:46

Dd1 will be sitting next year's 11 plus. She has said she wants to try and loves learning and a test. But thankfully we live in Birmingham where the grammar schools have catchment areas to discourage stuff like this. As PPs have said, will their younger sibling get to do the same thing?

the impact on the pass mark will be negligible and anyone suggesting otherwise will have likely had a child that failed by a small amount

Ah ok- that won’t be the case for lots of schools he sat for
interestingly, I’ve just noticed it doesn’t describe him sitting for any super selective, just pass fail counties which isn’t particularly academically strenuous .

Ah ok, so you're stalking me. A post from another thread. And you knew all along, so why ask?

I think my post shows I did some prep with my daughter but I certainly did not do the intense stuff I mentioned from reception age.

Did your child pass fhe 11plus for a superselective? What prep did you do with them and from what age. You seen rather keen on defending hot housing.

HaveYouSeenRain · 27/10/2024 08:54

bestbehaveyou · 27/10/2024 08:40

storm in a tea cup
only a teeny tiny minority of parents will put their children in for multiple 11 pluses
the impact on pass mark will be negligible

Indeed
most of the comments are so negative, instead of celebrating a clever young boy who is clearly well rounded and intelligent.

It’s always a race to the bottom.

If the rules are that everyone can apply for a certain grammar school, then maybe the local kids need ro raise their game and can’t just rely on living close. Complain to the school, not about the kids who are clever and score highly.

Nobody preps from reception! Don’t be ridiculous

you did only one practice test and are surprised she didn’t get in?

The SS near me have the same passmark each year but the score for entry to the school changes depending on the number of entrants getting the passmark.

E.g. passmark is 210 but score for entry is 220.

"all over MN bitching about it"

No, I've posted in several 11plus threads in the secondary boards when people were asking.

The one you've kindly quoted I mention that scores are age adjusted so my DDs score came as a surprise to me on the day.

I was posting to let the OP know to take age into account when prepping their child.

So passmark could be 210 but entry is 370 😂

SS near me had over 3000 children sit this year, and the top 80 performers will get a space. its a really different beast to pass fail and if he’s that academically able he doesn’t seem to have been stretched much at all- just travelled loads 😂

But how? I started 11+ in Y5 and I can’t see what you can do in reception. None of the materials can be comprehended by a reception child. I have heard Y3 but the norm seems to be Y4.

I am sorry for your disappointment, I understand it must be frustrating after all the hard work. Let me know if you have any advice.

Tutoring from reception yes, but obv not true prep ie they weren’t learning the relevant maths and practising 11+ verbal reasoning questions from 4 years old😂.

my daughter has been tutored from 4. through this and her extra curriculars I know a few families like the one in the article although they do have higher expectations that that (ie won’t be happy with a place from somewhere “easy to get into” like the Kent or bexley test but Henrietta barnet is the dream)

I know an adult who attended the local ss as a child and she told she was doing 11plus prep from reception. I remember it vividly as I thought I misunderstood her so I asked her to clarify. She told me it was VR and NVR, she would do daily practice at home and 2 tests at the weekend from reception.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/10/2024 09:10

Back in the day, I was in the last year to do 11+ in our area.
The primary schools did the 'prep' for it in the last year of junior school - they were fun lessons iirc. More like doing puzzles than work.
I guess that boat sailed a long time ago!
