If the UK has to pay reparations, will other countries?

If the UK is made to pay reparations where will that leave other nations who were or indeed still are involved in slavery?

Sadly no. We agreed that we had insufficient room to build a pool for a hippo, even a small one. We got guinea pigs instead.

A bit like reparations/hippo and Foreign Aid/guinea pig.

Perfect.

Unrulyrabbit · 26/10/2024 19:45

😀

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 19:45

Unrulyrabbit · 26/10/2024 19:42

Or someone else's completely unrelated and non beneficiary great great great great grandson

Very defensive no?

you dont seem able to say one bad thing about the UK's history.

As several posters pointed out to you already,

Many countries still suffer today from what the UK did to them in the past

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 26/10/2024 19:45

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 19:43

Yeah but the poster was talking about the past.

She said that the UK stopped slavery, so why should they pay reparations for slavery

I pointed out to her that the UK had still benefitted from slavery for a long time, even if they were the one to stop it in the very end

And she was right.

Take your guinea pigs while you can. A hippo won’t be forthcoming.

Here's another approach: my daughter asked if we could go to the shop to get some Haribo today.

"No, but I'll chop you up some apple instead."

"Oh. Okay."

Unrulyrabbit · 26/10/2024 19:49

Now I find myself googling 'do guinea pigs eat apple..'

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 19:49

"she was right."

well thats not what the commonwealth leaders think.

I'd like to hear their detailed accounts about their suffering

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/10/2024 19:51

Why don't you look up why the Commonwealth leaders are seeking reparations, for a start

No need; I was already aware of CARICOM's "10 point plan", which basically amounts to a demand for money on the basis of absolutely every negative indicator being the result of slavery

Hideous as the practice was, the phrase "If only it was that simple" comes to mind

Well maybe the UK shouldn't have invaded countries?

They invaded an awful lot of countries.

If you piss people off, it was always going to come back to bite the UK at some stage

FirstNationsEnglish · 26/10/2024 19:55

@Danajune11 Many countries still suffer today from what the UK did to them in the past

That's a wide scoping and unqualified statement. For the uneducated amongst us, can you name a few of the many countries and state how they still suffer from what the UK did to them in the past?

Unrulyrabbit · 26/10/2024 19:56

"Apples are high in vitamin C, a critical vitamin for guinea pigs

However, apples are also high in sugar content so they should be fed in moderation as treats, ideally no more than a half- inch cube twice per week."

Sure look up why the Commonwealth countries are seeking reparations, that'll give you a good start.

Portakalkedi · 26/10/2024 19:58

It's absolute nonsense, for all the aforementioned reasons. Why is the UK the only country being asked to pay though?

Because different countries have different leaders, and it's up to the leaders if they want reparations From former colonisers.

The commonwealth leaders have come together and agreed that they want reparations from the UK

Unrulyrabbit · 26/10/2024 20:00

I think we've circled back to the hippo idea

And there I was thinking I was being a responsible mum for offering apple as a Haribo substitute!

Agree completely, *Danajune11, and though most of this was long ago I wouldn't have agreed witth it then any more than I do with the amount of meddling we do now *

Trouble is, if we don't meddle we then get accused of turning a blind eye and "not caring" about whatever-it-is, so really it's a no-win situation all round and certainly isn't going to be solved by handing over more billions

Maybe we can ask for all the guinea pigs to be returned?

NoisyDenimShaker · 26/10/2024 20:09

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 26/10/2024 19:31

When my children were toddlers they kept asking me for money to buy a pet crocodile.

I just said no.

😂😂😂😂

Are you sorry for saying that I'm stupid , thick, a child and have a low IQ, and that a goldfish is more intelligent than me?

Just to point out your vile behaviour to anyone who didn't see it.

As I said to you, I will always stand up to bullies

Unrulyrabbit · 26/10/2024 20:12

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat I wonder whether, if we give the hippo and the guinea pig at the same time, the hippo might eat the guinea pig? So that might be best.

Um, what?

I don't think she said, or meant, any of these things! We've covered crocodiles, hippos, guinea pigs and apples, but no goldfish were mentioned as far as I could see.

FrippEnos · 26/10/2024 20:13

Can you try to think of other countries. Why do you think that they are asking for reparations From the UK

For all this talk of countries, what this is about is politicians.
Why are they doing this?
Because its a vote winner
Because its good for a politician to have something or someone that can be painted as a villain,
Because they can promise something that won't happen and then blame the villain that they have created.
Its a good distraction to have something that you can shove in the media so that you can hide behind it.
Because its good for a politician to divide the people so that they can get away with more.
And because when you have little or no money in the pot due to your own corruption or incompetence you can distract people by saying 'look at what they should give us', 'they owe us'.
