I was looking at the CARICOM Ten Point Plan (never heard of it before). To be bluntly honest it just seemed a load of word soup to me. I did get the bit about psychologic rehabilitation / African knowledge programme - and understand the 'disconnect', but, sincerely, fail to see how financial 'reparation' from a generation of people who have nothing to do with historic slavery can assist the mental health of people who are feeling the psychological hurts of not being certain of their historical roots.
Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure - I'm sorry, I cannot accept that modern ill health can be laid at the door of history. More, it's genetics and modern living.
Repatriation: how many CARICOM peoples currently living around the world truly want to be repatriated to the various African countries of their ancestors? The amount of folk coming to live in Europe from the Congo or Nigeria or Sudan or (name your country) would perhaps suggest that they are not the best places to live?
As an aside, I would hope that people who feel that way would be sympathetic to our Jewish friends who want to remain in their historic lands to live peacefully and without fear.
As many others have already said on this thread: how far back do you go and please treat other nations whose populations were enslaved, with the same measure. As a first nations English person, my ancestors were also enslaved by other nations. My more recent ancestors were exploited, if not enslaved, by the powerful and the rich to maintain the powerful and the rich. I am fortunate in that I do not dwell on historic wrongs and just make the most of my life as it is, now.
