If the UK is made to pay reparations where will that leave other nations who were or indeed still are involved in slavery?

Tony Blair apologised for Britain's role in slavery in 2007.

Yes, he did

We've already given billions in aid over the years to a lot countries that are wanting this.

Yep, we need to deduct all aid and benefits given to the countries concerned and their descendants who now live in the UK.

suburburban · 24/10/2024 19:51

Exactly

Mum2jenny · 24/10/2024 19:53

Total money grab by countries the UK has supported over the years.

Jacopo · 24/10/2024 19:53

I imagine the French would reply to such a request from North and West African countries with a Gallic shrug.

bombastix · 24/10/2024 19:53

This is never going to happen

timenowplease · 24/10/2024 19:53

Reparations for what?

kistanbul · 24/10/2024 19:54

If we can find the money, we should pay.

I don’t know why people are talking about other countries. I don’t check what the Spanish or Saudis think before I decide right from wrong. The UK should pay for its mistakes. Other nations can do whatever they think right.

CraftyPlumViewer · 24/10/2024 19:55

I think there's a reasonable moral argument...but the UK cannot afford it and, even if it could, I doubt it would agree. For one thing, it would be a hugely unpopular agreement/policy for any Government to adopt.

suburburban · 24/10/2024 19:55

Well we can't as far as I am concerned and it's not necessary

MidnightPatrol · 24/10/2024 19:55

There’s no way we will be paying reparations.

The suggestion of it is absolutely preposterous IMO.

Vintagevixen · 24/10/2024 19:55

Do we Brits get reparations from the Danes/Swedes for the Vikings enslaving our ancestors? Or the Italians for the Roman Empire era? Nonsense idea.

What’s the moral argument in favour of us paying reparations?

Yep, we need to deduct all aid and benefits given to the countries concerned and their descendants who now live in the UK.

The aid does not come without some bartering. There's already a fair (or unfair) exchange between countries with aid. We don't give them from the goodness of our hearts with nothing in return. This point is invalid.

I don't support monetary reparations though.

caringcarer · 24/10/2024 19:57

What people did hundreds of years ago may be wrong by today's standards but it's not as if we could pay the original people who were wronged. They are long dead. Best to apologise on our predecessors behalf and draw a line under it.

Tony Blair apologised for Britain's role in slavery in 2007.

Oh I didn't realise, why all the calls for an apology at the Commonwealth meeting then?

Oh just found this;

In 2006, Tony Blair called the slave trade a “crime against humanity” in an article in New Nation but fell short of issuing an apology, despite pressure from campaigners and the archbishop of York.
A year later, when asked why he had previously stopped short of apologising during a news conference with Ghana’s then-president, John Kufuor, Blair said: “Well actually I have said it: We are sorry. And I say it again now.”

So does that count as it being officially said?

We're already over a trillion pounds in debt. There is no money. Where do you think you're going to find it when our own country is a debt ridden mess of poor public services, unemployment, and economic stagnation?

nOasistickets · 24/10/2024 19:58

They won’t pay - no one will pay.

Secradonugh · 24/10/2024 19:58

Frowningprovidence · 24/10/2024 19:17

I assume it would put moral pressure on them to do the same. I imagine if there was success in this, other countries would increase pressure.

People seem to massively misunderstand slavery and slave trade, let alone britain's involvement. Britain didn't enslave 10 million Africans. It shipped 10 million Africans who in the vast majority of cases were sold by their own parents or tribal elders into slavery. If there is to be money repaid then they need to look at their own leaders and countries ad well.

But the current taxpayer's have not kept slaves.

Witchlite · 24/10/2024 20:00

What about the Italians compensating Uk for the Romans
The Scandinavians compensating for the Vikings
The French for the Normans

How far should we go back?

Middle Eastern countries also enslaved 8-12 million slaves from Africa and took them to Middle Eastern countries during the same period. They're generally better placed to pay compensation due to the massive oil profits they've made over the past few decades!

But why would we pay for mistakes made by other people hundreds of years ago? Do you think you should pay for your great great great grand parents mistakes? If they had unpaid debts do you think you should pay them?

Puffalicious · 24/10/2024 20:03

Lasttraintolondon · 24/10/2024 19:31

It's irrelevant anyway - we've got no money for anything.

Yup. Where do people expect it to come from?
