If the UK is made to pay reparations where will that leave other nations who were or indeed still are involved in slavery?

The UK isn't being made. It will have to agree to do so.

Frowningprovidence · 24/10/2024 19:17

I assume it would put moral pressure on them to do the same. I imagine if there was success in this, other countries would increase pressure.

Sethera · 24/10/2024 19:20

The government say they are not prepared to pay them.

NoisyDenimShaker · 24/10/2024 19:25

It's a shameless money grab. I hope the government doesn't give in.

BCBird · 24/10/2024 19:28

The shame is surely that of our predecessors not the victims?

Exactly!!

MulderitsmeX · 24/10/2024 19:30

No government would agree to it as they wouldn't win another election for years.... and Reform would do really well at the next election which we REALLY dont want.

Firestace · 24/10/2024 19:31

We've already given billions in aid over the years to a lot countries that are wanting this.

Lasttraintolondon · 24/10/2024 19:31

It's irrelevant anyway - we've got no money for anything.

But the benefits are ours too.

But that’s fairly irrelevant. I cannot imagine this ever going ahead, it would be vastly unpopular even in times of plenty and certainly not when everyone feels they are struggling.

MulderitsmeX · 24/10/2024 19:34

The UK is a bit fucked anyway. The time to ask was over 100 years ago!

Notsuchafattynow · 24/10/2024 19:35

Ain't gonna happen.

You think?

How could you assign degree of culpability?
Do the African nations who used slaves themselves get included? How about those Africans who captured others to sell to slavers?
Lots of modern black people are decended from slavers, and owned slaves themselves. Do they pay in?

Most people in UK never benefitted in any way from slavery, so who specifically is paying?

Genevieva · 24/10/2024 19:40

The world is so international now that the idea of reparations is farcical. Kamala Harris is descended from Jamaican plantation owners, whereas most Brits are descended from coal miners, factory workers and farm labourers. Britain today is an international melting pot.

We should give aid and we should give to charity based on current need. The ordinary British people are among the most generous charity givers in the world. We made it a part of our national psyche long ago. Comic Relief is just one example. We just need to keep being cognisant of others in need and be sure to help them.

Jessie1259 · 24/10/2024 19:43

What I don't understand is the reluctance to apologise. Does anyone know if there's a particular reason why everyone talks around it but won't actually apologise and why Charles would have to have agreement from the MPs to apologise? Why is saying sorry such a big problem? I don't agree with paying reparations this long after but surely we can say we're sorry it happened?

GildedRage · 24/10/2024 19:44

Canadians have been paying the First Nations for years and still they want more.

coffeeandteav · 24/10/2024 19:45

Could we cancel their debt instead or does it not work like that?

Notsuchafattynow · 24/10/2024 19:46

Probably due to an apology being seen as a step towards culpability and or a legal claim being made.

No one thinks today it was the right thing to do, but what do we do 100's of years down the line?

How much are you chipping in to pay?? Your savings? Your car? Your house??

Tony Blair apologised for Britain's role in slavery in 2007.

Do you live in the U.K.? And if so how much are you willing to chip in?

What about the Middle Easterns who were just as involved in the slave trade as the West?

In fact, why not go back a bit. What about the slaves used by Egyptian pharoahs, or those used in China? Or Russia? Or the slaves involved in the Viking and Roman invasion of Britain?
