To worry that once the sun explodes there will be

no intelligent life in the universe. Just vast space. It makes me sad: the slow evolution of man over billions of years; the art; the culture; to go from living in caves to flying to the moon in a blink of an eye.

OP posts:
Mmhmmn · 23/10/2024 21:10

Damn I hit YANBU by mistake 😂
You have no way of knowing what else is out there. There could be loads of worlds with intelligent life.
Also, we’ll all be long dead by the time the sun explodes. Also if we weren’t long gone, we’d wish we were ☀️ 🥵

I sort of get you, OP. As others have said, by the time the sun dies it's likely humans will be long gone and, in any event, it's likely that humans are not the only intelligent life in the universe.

What I do find sad, though, is that given that the universe is continuing to expand, there will come a time when, no matter what planet you're on, there will be no stars visible in the night sky and eventually the last of them will die and there'll be nothingness. Obviously it won't impact any of us, but I do find it a sad notion to reflect upon.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but why would no stars be visible regardless of what planet you are on? I'm sure there's a super logical explanation that I'm just missing but I can't currently wrap my head around it. If the universe is expanding and you're on a planet further out, would you not just see those stars around?

Seasmoke · 23/10/2024 21:16

You don't really need to imagine. Go find a super strong telescope or read up on what happens when stars die. The solar system will be sucked into a black hole but humans would have died long before then. The sun will have changed the atmosphere ( as will climate change, man made or not) long before.

Sadcafe · 23/10/2024 21:19

I truly believe if mankind is the most advanced life form in the universe, then it’s a very sad place

AutumnLeaves24 · 23/10/2024 21:19

no intelligent life in the universe

I'm not convinced there's any now.

if im
going to waste time worrying, I'll worry about one of the many things that are happening now & I might be able to have some influence over.

discoballdave · 23/10/2024 21:21

With the absolutely ridiculously fast way we've evolved and created technology so far, I have no doubt we'll have colonised another planet by that point.

you can toggle between YABU & YANBU

That's some really arrogant assumptions that you're making there.
1, your assuming that humans are an intelligent form of life rather than just sentient
2,that humans will still exist in the billions of years until the sun supper nova's
3, that we are the only intelligent (sentient) life in the universe.

BrieHugger · 23/10/2024 21:24

And here’s me worrying I’ve not got enough teabags to last until my Ocado delivery arrives.

NunyaBeeswax · 23/10/2024 21:25

If it makes you feel any better, Humans will be long dead before the sun explodes.

We'll be destroyed by our creations.
Nuclear war is most likely.
Or perhaps the continued pillaging of the earths resources and over population will lead to famines and civil wars etc.

Hell, we could have seen the first steps to human erasure recently with Musks robots and AI.

Humans won't change. Our eventual eradication is pretty much guaranteed, just a matter of when it happens.

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 23/10/2024 21:27

Climate change induced mass extinction is much closer than the sun expiring. So that's something to look forward to. 😶

EighteenOhFive · 23/10/2024 21:31

What?! Our sun is not at the centre of the universe. There's loads more going on out there.

Or do you mean our solar system?

Aposterhasnoname · 23/10/2024 21:31

Right, if you think intelligent life will end with our sun exploding, then either you think the universe consists only of our solar system and nothing else, or that there’s no other life in the vastness of space.

If you think that in the billions of billions of planets out there, no other intelligent life has independently arisen, then that means intelligent design of us, i.e. God. If you believe in God, then it is not possible to have no intelligent life left after our sun explodes, as God will still be there.

If you do believe intelligent life exists outside our solar system, then it will be unaffected by our sun exploding, therefore there will still be intelligent life in the universe.

If however, you think that the universe consists of just our solar system and nothing else, then intelligent life dying out wouldn’t be something you have to worry about anyway.

Lostinbrum · 23/10/2024 21:34

I wouldn't worry, it's more likely some virus or an asteroid will come along and wipe us all out long before the sun explodes

Helpimfalling · 23/10/2024 21:35

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/10/2024 21:05

The thing is we are very important to ourselves, but on a galactic level, it will be like the destruction that occurs every time we bleach a toilet.

I actually found that really profound!

thecherryfox · 23/10/2024 21:44

The idea of this and death gives me insane panic attacks. Like I scream out ‘no no’ because I cannot cope with the fact of the unknown. Scary stuff but I also wish I wasn’t so terrified because I would love to ponder and research, interesting but terrifying

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

That doesn't even make sense. How can walking be the opposite of hawking. Sitting is the opposite of walking.

I presume you mean intelligent in the loose sense

I was about to say that I'm not sure there is intelligent life here already. Or at least question whether humans qualify as intelligent 🤣

It's because everything is drifting apart from each other (as well as stars slowly dying). From Earth, we can only see a tiny fraction of the stars that exist because others are too far away and, as stars continue to drift apart, there'll be a point where they are so far apart that nobody/alien in any one solar system will be able to see any others.
