Why would you move to the middle of farmland if you are scared of farm animals?

I live in the countryside, surrounded by fields and until recently my nearest neighbour was a distant speck.
There was a derelict house that has been bought and renovated and I met my new neighbours yesterday. There's a big field between our houses and they asked was it used for animals. I said yes in the spring it usually has cows and calves in it. The husband said There better not be because he and their children are terrified of cows and big animals and can just about cope with hearing my donkeys.

Why on earth would you choose to move here then?

I got knocked over when I was about 12 by a sheep it headbutted me in the stomach.

Ahh that reminds me - do you remember that ‘You’ve Been Framed’ clip of a sheep (or was it a goat?) following that woman across a churchyard and head butting her? 🤣

My reaction was to laugh and tell him about the community Facebook page. Admittedly this is for my own amusement because if he thinks cows are bad, just wait for slurry spreading. I can't wait for his posts, especially as the field across the road from his house will have a whopping great big combine harvester in it til all hours in the summer.

Someone who moved into a village near me complained to the neighbouring farmer about him harvesting late into the evening. It kept his kids awake, apparently.

The locals in the village pub were pissing themselves about it when I was in there one evening. Even I knew harvesting was something that went on very late if the weather permitted and, having grown up in Croydon, my sole source of agricultural knowledge was The Archers.

We have a family farm. When the farmer next door died, the whole farm was sold in made into jouses. There have been six houses built. I kid you not, every single one of them should have stayed in the city where they moved from! They complain about the lane and road being mucky when it flicks up onto their porsche, the cockerel is too loud and too early. The cows smell, infact the whole countryside smells. So many more and they've all been whinging for years. It's ridiculous.

When we were farming we had complaints from weekender Londoners that:
-their Range Rovers were getting splattered driving through the muck left on the lane by our cows (maybe we could train them was suggested 😵‍💫) My DH suggested that they drive slower.
-tractors weren’t to be driven past their cottage before 11am
-combining had to finish no later than 5pm
-the cockerel was too noisy
-no church bells before noon on Sunday
I have never met so many nobs - they should never have bought a weekend cottage in our village where they were surrounded by thousands of acres of farmland and at least 6 farms.

But they are so delicious!

This is like seeing 12 year olds commenting on social media trying to ‘offend’ vegans. Embarrassing

Needalisteningear · 23/10/2024 19:39

It's ridiculous, it really is!
That's funny but it's scary that people think you can litter train cows 🤣
Another one we had was that there were mice. Not in their houses but outside! Another one slid on the ice in his car - "these roads should be gritted'... it's a private single track lane 🙄

Combining had to finish no later than 5pm 🙄🤣 Please tell me you told them where to go !! If it’s dry , you’ve got to combine even if it’s late into the night !!
Reminds me of that video that went viral a year or two ago of the enraged man standing in front of a moving combine harvester complaining that the farmers were ruining his picnic with their combining !!
Does make me wonder where some people think their bread comes from !! 🤔

Mischance · 23/10/2024 21:32

The only disadvantage for me of living in the country - apart from zilch public transport - are the tractors which block the lanes. I do big detours to avoid spending a whole journey reversing every few minutes! But it is their livelihood and I have no grumbles about it. The view from my window and the the support of the caring community more than make up for it.

Our new neighbours are very concerned about the stray cats around a farm they've moved next door to. I've tried to explain the concept of farm cats. I know these cats get fed but they are kept in the barns to keep down the mice. This lady gets very anxious for them and has started feeding them. She keeps saying, 'but who is responsible for them?! Why's no-one calling the RSPCA?' I can't keep repeating myself. I'm so sick of talking about the bloody cats! It's a wheat farm! There are mice everywhere! She also doesn't like the enormous vehicles which 'shake her house'.

Sounds similar to us. Our neighbours had one cat caught by cats protection as she had decided it was bothering her cat. This cat had kittens on our farm, we only found one after she was gone, the others likely died because of neighbour busybody.
I’ve chipped the others we have now. I insure then all too. They are feral and each chipped as “feral cat 1” etc. Cats protection now contact us to offload their feral cats. Good at catching mice and one of them is really sweet and friendly now.

We had three chickens at my last house. We once found a card from the postman by the front gate which stated the reason for non delivery that day was because 'hens out' 😂 what on earth did he think they were going to do to him!?

You don't live on Frogmarten Farm do you?

YellowAsteroid · 23/10/2024 22:04

the public display of category f4 fireworks 100yards from 150 pregnant ewes.

Whaaaa? Are people really so stupid as to do this near pregnant ewes? I love a good fireworks display, but in town, not in the middle of farming land. There’s too much risk to animals from all the empty rocket casings and so on.

ThespTheo · 23/10/2024 22:10

I’ve lived in the country all my life and I’m scared of cows and they’ve almost always stayed in the field. Almost always.

I'd have been tempted to have engine trouble outside at 4:30 am and have to keep revving it, to prevent a stall.

Pretty sure I could rope in all the farmers to dress as cows

If you are anyway near east Galway, could drum up a few non-farmers too. 😂

This is such a great thread. You must keep us informed of developments....

(with you re geese too)

If you have goats or are planning to have goats, yodelling is an option

CrossPurposes · 24/10/2024 00:37

Maybe suggest he moves to Newcastle - where cows roam freely on the Town Moor.

Why would you move to the middle of farmland if you are scared of farm animals?
DrRiverSong · 24/10/2024 06:04

Oh I miss the town moor cows. They’re great.

I can’t believe there are people trying to tell farmers when they can and can’t move vehicles and livestock 🤣

I had to call school once because I was stuck behind a flock of sheep being moved and would be late for school pick up. No stress. I was quicker waiting than turning round. I just cannot find it in me to get frustrated about farmers doing their job.

feellikeanalien · 24/10/2024 10:39

My DD couldn't believe her eyes when we first drove past the Town Moor. I think they're great too.

I hope the neighbour doesn't take some sort of manly action to Protect his Family from cattle. Keep an eye on him.

In a classic children's story, his offspring would become keen free labourers for you, yes :D and horrify him by bringing home animals. Hoping for the best outcome!

Pixiedust88 · 24/10/2024 17:57

We had a health visitor insist I lock my dogs outside in the garden in the pissing down rain because she’s scared of them and she wouldn’t come in the house until I had. I put them in the kitchen and shut the door because there’s no way I’d lock them outside in the rain. She then went on to slate everything my stepdaughter was doing for and with the baby and made a point of saying she’d be informing the social worker there were two dogs running loose in the house. I told her they already knew and that they had met both dogs and they were fine with it. I made a point of asking her why she did a job going out to peoples homes knowing they might have dogs and whether she’d put her children outside in the rain if she had a visitor who was scared of children. Needless to say she never came back

TinyKite · 24/10/2024 17:58

Unfortunately it’s the ‘world revolves around me’ mentality of people these days, I got moaned at because the sheep's breath smell and the hedge is too spiky. They need to deal with it or leave it’s the countryside for gods sake.

Sharptonguedwoman · 24/10/2024 18:03

twistyizzy · 23/10/2024 10:18

Because people see the countryside as a playground not a place of work.
They want to live in a sterile version of the countryside.

This is so true. People want the countryside to be there, like a giant park. They don’t want to engage with actual country living.
