Why would you move to the middle of farmland if you are scared of farm animals?

I live in the countryside, surrounded by fields and until recently my nearest neighbour was a distant speck.
There was a derelict house that has been bought and renovated and I met my new neighbours yesterday. There's a big field between our houses and they asked was it used for animals. I said yes in the spring it usually has cows and calves in it. The husband said There better not be because he and their children are terrified of cows and big animals and can just about cope with hearing my donkeys.

Why on earth would you choose to move here then?

They're not my cows btw. The farmer is a lovely very no nonsense woman who won't think twice about laughing at them.

Down to earth! My kind of peop 🌺

This is so funny. I don't trust cows but I wouldn't be surprised to find them in a field in the countryside!

cornflakecrunchie · 24/10/2024 18:54

Having lived on a farm until the last few years, I'm loving this thread.. please keep a diary of the dippy neighbours' doings..

littleorchard45 · 24/10/2024 19:34

We had someone move into the village, on Church Road (clue in the name…) who then complained about the church bells. There have also been moans about the farmer not picking cow poo from the fields. My suggestion is to go back to your nearest town or city and stay there. Please.

Yes I actually think the new neighbour is quite sensible to be terrified of cows, given the number of people who have been chased and trampled.

The simple solution is not to go in their field

changeme4this · 24/10/2024 20:39

Rural farmer here. We found those types were buying in because the subdivided farmland was what they could afford. Because a paddock is green they don’t think it needs fertilising, boundary fencing can wait because the priority is a pony or wrecked 2nd hand tractor that doesn’t come with attachments. the cows wake them up and they consider they are being targeted and harassed by the inconsiderate farmer for putting them in the adjoining paddock leading up to a long weekend when they want to sleep in…😉

anyhow I wish you luck. They will either be laughing at themselves in 5 years, or be mortified and sell up within 3.

My reaction was to laugh and tell him about the community Facebook page. Admittedly this is for my own amusement because if he thinks cows are bad, just wait for slurry spreading. I can't wait for his posts, especially as the field across the road from his house will have a whopping great big combine harvester in it til all hours in the summer.

😂😂😂😂

have considered lodgers!??

im up for it!!!

YouCanKeepHimJolene · 24/10/2024 20:49

Place marking for your updates in spring/summer when heavyweight farming is in full swing. Should be entertaining.

A similar story, though not farming. A really popular local pub near me, great wee place, full of old and young regulars, the go to nightlife at weekends etc. Well publicised, it wasn't exactly a secret. A couple bought the empty flat nextdoor to the pub and then complained relentlessly until the pub lost its licence and closed. Why people move to places knowing full well what is there just to complain that they don't want to live next to a busy pub/farm I will never understand. Of all the houses they could have bought and they chose the ones next to the things they don't like. Nutters!

I've just had a stream of unpleasant messages from someone because I've objected to the public display of category f4 fireworks 100yards from 150 pregnant ewes.

Apparently I've caused to distress to her by my objections she's so upset she's 'crying and shaking' (Must be on MN if that's happened)

@Serencwtch

FMD.

stupid stupid woman.

Please PLEASE update this when he tells the farmer that she'd 'better not put cows in the field'...

I have to hear how that goes.

We had a family move in near to friends farm, the bloke turned up one day at the my friends door to inform him that he could ONLY be cutting his hay (and various other crops) during office hours, as cutting through the night was 'ridiculous' and 'disturbing my sleep'...

Friend pointed out that stuff is harvested when its ready and this is dictated by the weather, not stroppy little men from Birmingham... so then the bloke asked if he could cut it all with the lights off.

'Sure, if you'd like to risk me missing a turn and coming through your patio doors...'.

Apparently my friend is wildly unreasonable and a twat... he told the whole pub so and the laughter didn't stop til he was halfway down the road, tail between his legs.

😂😂😂😂😂😂

this thread is such a lovely funny relief today 😊

Bernardo1 · 24/10/2024 21:47

You would think they should have carefully researched this.

If you purchase a property surrounded by fields, how do think they are utilised?
Would it be preferable they were sold to Barret homes to put up an estate of tacky box's with barking dogs and feral children.

CrowleyKitten · 24/10/2024 22:22

it's like moving in next to a late night pub or nightclub, and complaining that there are drunk people out and about late at night.
animals are part of the countryside, both domestic and wild. it's not just pretty landscapes and rolling fields.
there's also, tractors, animals blocking the roads being moved between fields, the smell of muckspreading, etc.

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/10/2024 22:55

We had someone on the local FB group who had clearly never lived in the country before. They complained about the smell from muck spreading and the lack of advanced warning 🤔 Under the circumstances people were quite kind but a couple of weeks later one of the farmers posted "as requested, I am giving notice that everywhere within a 3 mile radius is going to stink of shit for a while and shutting the windows won't help". My sister works near the house in question and it's up for sale again, second time in just over a year!!

Nikitaspearlearring · 23/10/2024 10:17

P.S I am very envious of you having donkeys!

Me too!

Mamanyt · 24/10/2024 23:32

LOL, BOY is he in for a treat! Yes, there will be cows. And all sorts of other animals. Their manure will stink in August. And his kids will almost certainly get an eye-opening course in sex education. I bet he doesn't last 2 years, if that. Or, maybe, just maybe, he'll get over it.

greatoceanroad · 24/10/2024 23:44

Well he sounds absolutely Batsh1t crazy. Sounds like they all need some exposure therapy 😭😭😭

Nogaxeh · 24/10/2024 23:46

You get this sort of thing with people buying houses in urban areas too. Some people will buy a house next to a primary school, or a playground, and complain about the noise from young children playing. Or next to a pub or a takeaway and complain about the noise in the evenings.

Which is to say that sometimes people are daft.

I hope they don't end up making too much of a nuisance about it.

Nogaxeh · 24/10/2024 23:49

Oh, and the other thing, is that he should be very grateful that it's not pigs.

Every other farm animal is fine, but large numbers of pigs in one place stink a million times worse. It's easy to tell which farmers buy slurry from pig farms for spreading on their fields.

We used to live in a city and we had a neighbour who was apoplectic by the noise the children were making during outdoor playtime at a nursery a few doors up (it was no secret it was a nursery, big sign up front, etc). He decided to film the children while they were playing to demonstrate how anti social they were and was OUTRAGED when the nursey sent him a cease and desist letter and a visit from the police to tell him to stop filming toddlers! I wouldn't mind but we lived on a busy road with a nightclub at one end of the street and a pub at the other but he took issue with three year olds playing!

PyongyangKipperbang · 25/10/2024 01:59

It happens a lot.

Alongside the one I posted above was a couple who bought house next to a farm in the village one along from us and tried to get the farm basiclaly shut down. The farm that had been there for hundreds of years!

And I am sure that there was a thread on here a while back (during Covid if memory serves) with a similar story.

"Oh now we can work from home, lets move the country darling!!"
"Oh wait, there are animals and smells and noises, lets get up a petition". Its barmy!

Maybe suggest he moves to Newcastle - where cows roam freely on the Town Moor.

Thanks, I recognised it immediately! I'm not too far away. They're almost always bullocks, BTW...

Apologies for curmudgeonly pedantry!

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 25/10/2024 11:15

City centre pigeons are much worse than any amount of cow
