Why would you move to the middle of farmland if you are scared of farm animals?

I live in the countryside, surrounded by fields and until recently my nearest neighbour was a distant speck.
There was a derelict house that has been bought and renovated and I met my new neighbours yesterday. There's a big field between our houses and they asked was it used for animals. I said yes in the spring it usually has cows and calves in it. The husband said There better not be because he and their children are terrified of cows and big animals and can just about cope with hearing my donkeys.

Why on earth would you choose to move here then?

Give a hearty country laugh and say “arrr they’d better get used to it then”. And make sure you’re chewing on a piece of hay when you answer.

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 23/10/2024 10:10

Hope you laughed in his face… these are questions to ask before buying not after…

please put the noisiest animal near them …

I don’t like horses so would never buy a property near horses isn’t that just called common sense or is that a old fashioned view now

Stormyweatheroutthere · 23/10/2024 10:10

Raid your piggy bank and buy a huge bull....

Buy a cockerel. That will really cheer them up Grin

It's like those people who go on Escape to the Country who want to be well connected back to town but don't want to live anywhere near or be able to hear any road!

RocketPanda · 23/10/2024 10:13

They're not my cows btw. The farmer is a lovely very no nonsense woman who won't think twice about laughing at them.

Bloody hell, never mind that - what about when they're weaning them?! Shock

What an absolutely bizarre place for them to buy.

That drives me mad! How did they get there then? Answer: on a road.

People are afraid due to ignorance; that is, due to having no connection with the land at all and even (as someone said in the paper) that they can name five Kardashians but not five trees. They see the countryside as a big theme park.
I would invite those little darlings round to pet the donkeys and feed the calves, and before you know it you'll have free labour.

Borninabarn32 · 23/10/2024 10:17

"There better not be" ?? "Well I've just told you there definitely will be" what a weird response, yes the farmland will be used for farming. They'll get used to it or move.

Mischance · 23/10/2024 10:17

I am surrounded by fields. There is an assortment of animals that come and go, and there is a lot of nature going on. If your neighbour's children are not yet aware of the facts of life, they will learn pretty fast!!!

Nikitaspearlearring · 23/10/2024 10:17

P.S I am very envious of you having donkeys!

Badburyrings · 23/10/2024 10:17

To be fair I live in the country and am terrified of cows. I have a horse though and some sheep and a dog. I can ride through a dairy farm where they are behind gates but I could never walk through a field of them with calves. Heard far too many stories about them trampling people. I suspect I could cope with a dairy herd with no calves at foot.

twistyizzy · 23/10/2024 10:18

Because people see the countryside as a playground not a place of work.
They want to live in a sterile version of the countryside.

I agree, what a strange response, like what’s he going to do about it? 🤔

RocketPanda · 23/10/2024 10:18

Donkeys are very sensitive and no way am I letting them pet them. Although one brays at cars like a deranged guarddog so they could pet him. He has no sense of space so will happily stand on their toes.

Perhaps because for that one reason not to live in the countryside, there are a thousand and one reasons to go for it?

Eh, they'll get used to it. I was brought up in the middle of a field, haha. Cows or sheep there every year (not ours, dad loaned it out).

I'm terrified of cows, despite that being where I spent my whole childhood from birth, always have been, and I coped. I just didn't go in the field.. and the cows didnt tend to break out. The sheep did 😂

Do think it's a bit silly people saying they're only scared of cows because they're not used to it. I was used to it, farming family, and I'm scared of them.

DD works for an animal rescue so we have a bit of an eclectic collection of donkeys, chickens, cats, dogs and connemara pony.

Exactly! Once the presenter said to them, you'll hear road noise from everywhere in this county, it's so flat!

twistyizzy · 23/10/2024 10:22

@RocketPanda get some geese and really scare your neighbours 🤣
To be fair they have a good right to be wary of cows, farming girl here and I'm very wary of them

RocketPanda · 23/10/2024 10:23

Cows can be very mardy and unpredictable especially with calves and I wouldn't be hopping the fence to pet them.

RocketPanda · 23/10/2024 10:24

@twistyizzy now geese are absolute bastards. I swear they are more dinosaur than birds.

Well unless there is a footpath that field is private access isn't it, so doesn't really concern them as they shouldn't be in it!

Mischance · 23/10/2024 10:32

When there are cows in the neighbouring field I do not walk through it. Your neighbours can do the same and make sure they are on the opposite side of the fence. As to animals making animal noises .........
