Why would you move to the middle of farmland if you are scared of farm animals?

I live in the countryside, surrounded by fields and until recently my nearest neighbour was a distant speck.
There was a derelict house that has been bought and renovated and I met my new neighbours yesterday. There's a big field between our houses and they asked was it used for animals. I said yes in the spring it usually has cows and calves in it. The husband said There better not be because he and their children are terrified of cows and big animals and can just about cope with hearing my donkeys.

Why on earth would you choose to move here then?

What did you say to him?
I wonder what he meant by saying there better not be, if he’s the type to try and have a go at the farmer? He sounds like an idiot.

I’m in a similar type set up. When I open my bedroom window, there are usually cos staring in from about 5 meters away 🤣. One of the nearby neighbours keeps carrier pigeons so sometimes they fly overhead. Some guy bought one of the other houses around here and came over to introduce himself. He immediately started in on how much he hates pigeons and kept going about how “we’re going to need to do something about this, if you give me your email address then I’ll get started on the complaints from
the both of us.” He was told to jog on sharpish. Idiot buying a house here and thinking he could just get all the animal keepers to stop.
He was also making big plans to build some of those flat pack German “small house” holiday homes and start running an Airbnb thing. Luckily that all got refused and off he fucked.

Yes I actually think the new neighbour is quite sensible to be terrified of cows, given the number of people who have been chased and trampled.

But they’re not being put up in his garden. They’re in a field. What’s the issue? Just don’t go in the field? It sounds like he doesn’t want them anywhere near him, but he bought a home facing farmland…

EmeraldRoulette · 23/10/2024 13:36

I would have asked him that question.

"The husband said There better not be [animals in the field I don't own]"

Quite the fuckwit, it would seem. And entitled, since he seems to believe he has any say in the matter (spoiler - he doesn't).

I sometimes think there are people who think farmland is just a big park, when it is actually a food factory. He and his children had better get used to the 'big animals' because those animals have an absolute right to be there. All that family need do is to treat the field as private property (which it is) and stay the hell out of it.

Apparently more people are killed in the uk every year by cows than by dogs.

I only found that out recently and i admit to being wary of cows even before that

But Jesus wept, what are they proposing to do? Demand the calves and cows be remooved?

Where did they live before? Next door to a pub? But didn't like it being noisy after 8pm? Or the noise of the delivery trucks?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 23/10/2024 13:49

People are unfortunately thick as pig shit. I'd love to know how long they last.

Yalta · 23/10/2024 13:50

Could you get life size cardboard cows and put them all over the field one night

Would love to see the reaction 😆

FunnysInLaJardin · 23/10/2024 13:52

I live in the countryside and there are fields of animals all round here.

You just don't go into the fields with the animals, tis quite simple

MmedeGouge · 23/10/2024 14:02

We had a deranged donkey years ago.
He could be friendly and welcoming and accepting of gifts of carrots etc from passers by.
He would lull them into a false sense of security and then on other occasions he would turn on them, show his long, yellow teeth and chase them out of his field, bellowing and
hee hawing maniacally.
It gave us lots of amusement as children.

Soubriquet · 23/10/2024 14:04

We live no where near a farm and yet weirdly enough get sheep almost everyday on the river bank across the road. Very odd to suddenly hear baaaaa.

It is weird to move to a farm area though if you’ve frightened of them. Their reactions come spring is going to be…interesting

Cows are scary because they can look so docile and then trample someone to death. Geese fly their arsehole flag high. They don’t pretend to be nice. I respect geese.

A farmer once said to me that the reason cows are so dangerous is because they're both large and stupid Grin

Soubriquet · 23/10/2024 14:06

Speak of the devils. There they are

Can you borrow a slurry spreader, to welcome him to country life? Possibly build a gigantic Wicker Man for 'Guy Fawkes', and amiably enquire about the virginity status of his off spring whilst chewing on some hay, ensuring your blacked out teeth are given a good airing?

RocketPanda · 23/10/2024 14:10

My reaction was to laugh and tell him about the community Facebook page. Admittedly this is for my own amusement because if he thinks cows are bad, just wait for slurry spreading. I can't wait for his posts, especially as the field across the road from his house will have a whopping great big combine harvester in it til all hours in the summer.

A sheep's main purpose in life is to find new and inventive ways of maiming itself @Soubriquet . That's why they are there.

Doesn’t surprise me. I used to work at a rescue kennels based on a farm. The amount of times we had a phone call cos the sheep were running down the main road, or were found in someone’s field eating the crops was unreal

If the field has a public footpath in it I think it’s wrong to have even remotely ‘lively’ animals in it. Cows and calves are a definite no, as are bulls or bullocks. Public right of way means members of the public ought to be able to pass safely along the path.

He’ll soon learn he has no business issuing better nots regarding farming. If he wants to get on well with his neighbours and not have slurry sprayed on the fields adjacent to his house, that is.

TashaTudor · 23/10/2024 14:23

We used to live next to a sheep field.
No issues at all until one sheep took a dislike to my mum and would chase her into the corner of the field and just stare at her. She developed a massive fear of sheep. It was hilarious 😂

You clearly don’t live in the countryside. Farmers routinely use their titles for cattle regardless of footpaths. Public rights of way don’t trump the farmer’s right to use his farmland as, well, farmland. They don’t have an infinite choice of fields, such that they can just not use any with footpaths. They tend not to keep grown bulls near the public though, which is considerate. It is good for calves to become accustomed to people from a young age.

rainfallpurevividcat · 23/10/2024 14:27

As long as the field has adequate fencing it shouldn't be an issue.

Across the road from us, our neighbours used to get cows in the garden eating their flowers. They and the farmer have put in better fencing now.

I hope he doesn't complain about the cattle mooing at night. I like the sound, which sounds more like a distant hum when I have the windows open but they are not exactly quiet! 🐮😅

boilingstormyseas · 23/10/2024 14:27

A few years ago a couple retired to our village and bought a house close to the church ... and then became overly aggressive about the noise of the church bells. You couldn't make it up. Needless to say no one in the village agreed with them.

DD works for an animal rescue so we have a bit of an eclectic collection of donkeys, chickens, cats, dogs and connemara pony.

It sounds fabulous, I want to be your neighbour!
