Restaurants adding honey to cheese!

ThespTheo · 20/10/2024 15:40

Baked Camembert ruined by drowning it in honey, same for mozzarella sticks.

Who started this awful trend for adding honey to perfectly good cheese?

Or am I weird for not liking it?

Cheese woth something sweet is always a winner. Figs, grapes, membrillo, apricits, apples, chutney, jam, honey. You just gotta pair it right.

😀

I never serve Manchego without truffle honey. You would hate it in my house.

What language is this?

It's Doric, is it.

I was on one of the Greek islands earlier this year and saw fried feta with honey and sesame seeds on the menu. I was feeling brave and ordered it. It was delicious, the salty feta and honey complemented each other perfectly.

feta and honey is an amazing combination.

Pickingmyselfup · 20/10/2024 17:54

I think it works well with some cheese, no different to chutney really.

I've been inspired to have a sweet and savoury combination...

Parmesan and garlic twists with black garlic and rosemary cheese and chilli jam. The jam adds a sweetness with a kick, the twists a salty tang and the cheese a bit of a savoury flavour. Doesn't work all that well with mature cheddar though but it does go well with brie.

Not for me, I was given white Stilton with apricots one birthday. I couldn't even pretend to like it. Same with some white cheese with cranberry, forced on me once!

And I got some olive rolls from a bakery, recently and made a sandwich with one. No other bread in the house. They'd given me sweet sultana rolls, which did NOT go well with cheese and Tourchon ham, the useless bastards. I threw the roll out for the birds and was hungry on just the filling.

My daughter liked the rolls, so it wasn't a total catastrophe.

Am I alone in finding cheese and red wine a revolting combination?

From Angus to Peterhead and Buckie etc.

It's OK if someone likes honey. I think it's vile.

Like salted caramel. Whose idea was that?! Confused VILE!

Yes! Really thought this trend would have died out by now. I'm going to start petitioning for unsalinated caramel.

When I was a child I told my gran I liked curry after my dad experimented with some Chinese curry powder, so she took me to a cafe that served it on Roker seafront. I can still remember the shock that came over me when I discovered it was full of sultanas.

I'm guessing you'd prefer marmalade...

🤣🤣🤣🐻

I went to an Indian restaurant a few months ago. Ordered peshwari nan. Instead of lovely nuts and fruit, they brought a plain nan with hot honey over it. Disgusting.

FirconeTheCat · 20/10/2024 18:03

I believe in Cyprus where they produce Halloumi, it’s sometimes served with honey. It all depends whether you enjoy sweet with salty.

Aye well, they're a bit behind the times in Sunderland, but I'm sure it's improved since 2015.

When I first stayed in Aberdeen I was puzzled for a while by the citizens ending almost every sentence with "is it". Coming from an area where we end sentences with "like", it took a while to realise that a response was not required.

Lilly11a · 20/10/2024 18:19

Not to derail the thread entirely but I like cheese toasties my George foreman grill mixed with sweet chilli sauce 🤤

I like it (depending on the cheese, and on the wine!), but cheese and ale is very, very nice. You can also have white wine with many cheeses.

Are you a Geordie?

Mandoidi · 20/10/2024 18:23

It's not cheese but has anyone ever had honey and crème fraîche? A little dollop og both on a spoon. OMG it's delicious. A little guilty pleasure

Yes. Love a cheeseboard and red wine

Mochudubh · 20/10/2024 18:26

@SinnerBoy

Are you a Geordie?

Haha, no, rural middle of Scotland, but I do find a Geordie accent very easy to understand.

Ah, I'm a Geordie and don't have a problem with Scottish accents in general, unless it's a Weegie, laying it on thick! I took me less than a fortnight to cotton on to Aberdonians. I'd be out with colleagues from Englandshire, chatting with a local and they'd go, "How can you understand him?"

I'd be, "Eh, how can ye not, like?" I mean people who'd been up there for years!

thebigchangeishere · 20/10/2024 18:44

Spain has served honey with cheese for years.

With the right cheese it's yum
