Restaurants adding honey to cheese!

Baked Camembert ruined by drowning it in honey, same for mozzarella sticks.

Who started this awful trend for adding honey to perfectly good cheese?

Or am I weird for not liking it?

It’s not a trend.
In Greece, Turkey, Middle East it’s an old tradition.

It’s not a recent trend, they’ve been doing it since at least the 80s in the U.K.,

I didn't know that! It's not something I've come across before. Next time I have a baked Camembert, I'll have to remember to ask if they do it with honey and tell them I don't want honey on it!

pestowithwalnuts · 20/10/2024 15:57

Iv seen cheese boards with a honeycombe and a special wooden drizzeler

I was on one of the Greek islands earlier this year and saw fried feta with honey and sesame seeds on the menu. I was feeling brave and ordered it. It was delicious, the salty feta and honey complemented each other perfectly.

Yes: that’s an actual Greek dish.

Pouring honey over different types of cheese not so much

SinnerBoy · 20/10/2024 15:58

Mind you, I had a pizza with avocado, in Darwin, last year and loved it. Any thoughts?

purplebeansprouts · 20/10/2024 15:58

Whipped feta with honey has been a thing for years. It will go out of fashion soon. Same as when EVERYWHERE was obsessed with pulled pork

Kierparma · 20/10/2024 15:58

Feta with honey is amazing

Halloumi with warm honey and chilli is also amazing

Cynic17 · 20/10/2024 15:59

Goats cheese with honey has been a classic, simple dessert in southern France for years - it's delicious.

Ponderingwindow · 20/10/2024 15:59

Mmm, now I want some Gorgonzola flatbread with hot honey.

HappyDane · 20/10/2024 15:59

I don't like honey but I do like it on or with cheese! Especially warm, melty, creamy cheese. It's been a thing forever in some countries/regions of the world so it's really not a new trend..

Oh God, you've reminded me of New Year about 5 years ago, when my psycho SiL from Hell made it in 2 litres of Coke. She had a fit at me, because I didn't like it! She was offended that most of it was still there in the morning and even our Labrador turned her nose up at it!

I think honey is delish but I don’t want it on my cheese, certainly not as a surprise addition! Wasn’t on either menu.

Sorry, missed this bit.

That is weird. Did you point this out and ask for a replacement?

They should be saying it upfront.

ScottBakula · 20/10/2024 16:01

I haven't tried it so I can't say for certain but I dont think I'd like it.
It may be ok with salty cheese or with a strong blue cheese but I prefer all my cheeses naked .
I may add a tiny bit of onion or pickle or very thin sliced crunchy apple but I want it to be my choice, not automatically added by the chef.
I also hate it when chips are pre salted , I hate salt added to my food , if I wanted it I am perfectly capable of adding it myself.

And salted caramel can fall off the face of the earth!

Ok rant over .

GogAndMagog · 20/10/2024 16:01

It's lovely on baked goats cheese as a desert!

Hot honey is a’ the bash richt noo. Affa fine min.

You are right, it's "cool" right now.
However, 🤢.
Any mustard or poppy seed, maybe?
😖

MonsteraMama · 20/10/2024 16:02

Crackers with mature gouda, honey and smoked salt is one of my favourite snacks, but I wouldn't put honey on mozzarella sticks or Camambert! There's a time and place for honey on cheese and it's not 'all the time', only with certain cheeses, and definitely not as the default 🙃

TerfTalking · 20/10/2024 16:03

Now I don't like honey, but I had whipped goats cheese drizzled in honey with walnuts somewhere and it was awesome. I'm a convert.

You and your dog have very good taste .

CloudywMeatballs · 20/10/2024 16:07

It works on some cheeses - Camembert being a good example. But I can't imagine it with mozzarella sticks, and I have never seen it on mozzarella sticks!

NeverEnoughPants · 20/10/2024 16:09

Went to a place serving tapas in Dundee. My favorite things was the cheese and honey salad. Delicious!

Yes! Had this for lunch when we were in Greece in August and it was lush!

I first came across honey with cheese in an Italian restaurant in London - I was out for lunch and me and friends shared a cheese board as a dessert. There was a selection of lovely cheeses and breads and came with fruits, small dishes of honey and walnuts. Never tried honey on cheese but it was lovely.

Purplecatshopaholic · 20/10/2024 16:10

Honey with cheese is awesome!

bluecomputerscreen · 20/10/2024 16:11

love it
honey goes so well with savoury. just a variation of a ploughman's pickle innit.

local cafe serves an open sandwich with sourdough rye bread, honey, mustard, pickles, old cheese, topped with a fried egg. yum.

WonderingWanda · 20/10/2024 16:12

I like it. If's a bit of a fad at the moment but at least they're finally laying of the balsamic vinegar lately!

TwigletsAndRadishes · 20/10/2024 16:12

Honey on halloumi is lovely. Surely it's mentioned in the menu description? If you don't want it just say so.
