Restaurants adding honey to cheese!

ThespTheo · 20/10/2024 15:40

Baked Camembert ruined by drowning it in honey, same for mozzarella sticks.

Who started this awful trend for adding honey to perfectly good cheese?

Or am I weird for not liking it?

But I don’t think it should come as a surprise. It’s an allergen

I didn't know that; but I do now. Thanks.

I don't really eat sweet stuff, it makes me feel ill. I also really dislike sweet and savoury together; ham and pineapple, pork and apple sauce etc.

I feel like this about salted caramel. Love salt( on chips). Love caramel ( as a sweet in a box of chocs). Salted caramel...absolutely vile. In a tart,a pudding, a flan....the work of Satan

Twiglets1 · 20/10/2024 17:27

I’ve not experienced this yet but any attempt at drizzling honey over my cheese would be met with a hard stare from me.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/10/2024 17:29

I had a pizza that was supposed to have Gorgonzola on it, the other day. It also had honey on. It was nice, but completely overpowered the cheese!

Pineapple isn't sweet and apple sauce isn't always sweet, I make it without sugar.

I don't have a sweet tooth but I think one could order cheese without honey. Honey is OK with some things.

I'm guessing you'd prefer marmalade...

Truffle honey and manchego is good of the gods

nameXname · 20/10/2024 17:31

@Molecule could not agree more about everything being so sweet now. Sadly, two of my favourite restaurants (in Glasgow) have fallen into this trap. Hispi cabbage with raisins (AND balsamic), anyone? Or tofu with mango?

I usually have the opposite of a sweet tooth, but I do remember, many years ago, while abroad, being offered some sort of sharp salty creamy cheese - maybe made with yoghurt? - with honey and some fairly crisp pitta-type bread, for breakfast. That worked, though I would not have liked to eat it often, or in quantity.

@HappyDane When I bake camembert I use aromatics like thyme, rosemary

I would cry if I ordered Camembert and it came with rosemary or thyme. They’re abominations.

Hopefully it says on the menu so it'll never happen to you!

If you were coming to mine for dinner I'd make you a little one all to yourself without anything you find abominable. 🙂

I feel like this about salted caramel.

Before I packed in eating sweet stuff, I tried it and wasn't really disgusted, I mean, I wouldn't choose it, but for me, it was OK.

Sorry!

Pineapple isn’t sweet??

@HappyDane thank you ❤️😻

Clevs · 20/10/2024 17:40

I had a flatbread recently that was topped with southern fried chicken tenders and Thai honey sauce and it was delicious 😋

Obviously not as sweet as fudge, but there's still a lot of sugar in apple and pineapple. Apple juice is the sugariest on the market, it's about 10%. And pineapple fruit is about the same.

Hiphopopotamonster · 20/10/2024 17:42

This thread has actually just made me make myself a slice of sourdough with honey and sharp cheddar for my Sunday tea. Absolutely perfect combination. But then I also love jam and cheese in a croissant and marmalade and cheese on toast. And cheese with Christmas cake. Cheese just goes so well with sweet flavours I think (and I generally don’t have a sweet tooth)

Crumbled parmigiano and honey has long been common in Italy

meisafairy · 20/10/2024 17:44

It’s like the shove coriander 🌿 on everything trend. 🤢

Hot honey is a’ the bash richt noo. Affa fine min.

It does seem to be everywhere, especially cheese related. I can’t stand it 🤢

DilemmaDelilah · 20/10/2024 17:45

My grandmother used to make me cheddar and honey sandwiches, and I still like cheddar and honey together now. There is a fashion for hot honey now (chilli flavoured honey) with a lot of things. I don't like chilli so it's not for me, but cheese and honey together isn't a new thing.

Huh? Ripe pineapple is very sweet. And an abomination on pizza.

I have a very sweet tooth, but not when it comes to savoury dishes. I miss the days when I could order a caramel icecream and not get salted caramel. And even though I like sweet food, I actually dislike the taste of honey. It needs to be kept away from my cheese!

Teq · 20/10/2024 17:46

I’m severely allergic to honey and bees. Full on My Girl situation and I carry an epipen. It doesn’t have to be listed as an allergen but I’m always careful to ask about ingredients in restaurants and inform them of my allergy. The amount of times I’ll ask if something has honey to be told “no” only for the waiter to sheepishly return a while later to say “actually, I just checked with the kitchen and turns out there is honey in this sauce/dressing”.

Allergy issues aside, I find it strange it’s in so many things and not listed on the menu.

I once had to use my epipen in a vegan restaurant which was just bizarre. I’d ordered a drink that had agave but they’d run out and substituted honey.
