There's something weird going on in my house

horseHorseHorse · 19/10/2024 23:31

For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing lights on when I come in when I'm 100% sure I've turned them off. Milk out on the side when I'm sure it's been put away. Stuff moved around but not in an obvious way, just a "huh, I could have sworn I left that somewhere else."

Put it down to rushed mornings and my cats playing with stuff.

Been out most of the day, just went into the upstairs bathroom for the first time since this morning and there's blood on the loo tank. Thought it could have come from a cat bringing something in but the door has been closed all day, and it's on the third floor so it's not like they could have got in and out like that. Windows have been closed too.

I have already bought carbon monoxide detectors in addition to the wired in ones. They're all over the house but haven't picked anything up.

Have a loft but the hatch is tiny and doesn't seem to have been disturbed.

Have an internal camera which shows the front door and hall - no activity though it did show my dog going bonkers barking at something outside a couple of times today (though the external camera isn't up yet so I couldn't see what)

Only direct family have keys and they wouldn't do stuff like this. Will be changing the locks tomorrow!

I'm properly creeped out ATM! Husband will be back shortly from work thank god! I'm in the bedroom with the door wedged shut for the moment!

Please someone give me a rational explanation!

Can you not set up little wireless cameras around the home for 48 hours to see while you stay at your sisters?

After Christmas last year we had similar in our kitchen. Cupboards being opened, things being moved and spilled, strange marks everywhere.

No typical signs of pests, but it was a massive, fat, intelligent rat. It took us ages to catch the bastard but we only found out it was a rat with the cameras. We had pest companies out, we had the council out, we had our drains surveyed to the tune of £200/m of drain in an act of utter desperation.

When we did finally catch the bastard culprit, it couldn't have been more Tom and Jerry if it tried. All it needed was tar and feathers.

We used the Blink wireless rechargeable ones that are motion activated with night vision. Highly recommend. Just need to be floor level and countertop level.

OK I'm quite curious.... howd he get in???

missb10 · 20/10/2024 20:38

Who has keys to your home? Your ex (change the locks), your children, your parents or other family? Ask them if they have been letting themselves in recently. Cats, rats and crazy bats wouldn't leave milk out on the side. It's coming up to Hallowe'en so I would say that ghosts are the likely answer in the case.👻

Alicehatter · 20/10/2024 20:40

Rats are incredibly intelligent, but I'm still not sure they'd manage to open a fridge, take out the milk then close the door behind them... and although they can climb walls, I don't see what they'd get out of turning a light on?!

OP please take pics of your house next time you leave for work - I neeeed to know if anything else happens now!!

Two things that might be helpful

when my sister lived at home she heard someone rifling through the kitchen and barricaded herself in a room and called police. When they came they discovered two cats fighting in the kitchen which was of course very loud! Cats definitely could be knocking stuff over etc.

also, we had friends (when we were kids) who frequently let themselves into their neighbours house and wandered round (they were about 6/7 and they could access it by climbing their fence). It was an odd story as they just mooched around and didn’t know they were up to no good, kids left to their own devices with absent parents. Could something like that be happening?

A neighbour’s cat once got into our house at 1am (there was an old unused cat flap that toddler had unlocked when I took my eyes off her for 30 seconds 🤦‍♀️)

My husband was away so it was me and 3 small kids. Bloody thing sounded like someone rifling through my things and i was absolutely shitting myself, had my phone out to call the police and my old heavy maglite for self defence in hand, crept to the top of the stairs. Little fucker stuck his head round the bottom of the stairs and I burst into tears 😂😂

Very scary op! Sending you lots of love and hoping its nothing sinister!

Gagaandgag · 20/10/2024 20:44

A family member who doesn’t want to tell you?

If no one you think has access to your house apart from those you trust with keys then it must be yourselves. If you have light switches at each end of a room then one can flick them off, and the other does the same assuming they are the ones flicking them off. Milk left out, could be either of you in a rush. Easy done.

I'm sorry but that's hilarious 😂. Poked it's head round

Snazzysausage · 20/10/2024 20:49

Given the op wiped the cistern before she left for the day and the bathroom door was latched shut on her return, how could it have been the cat? I know cats are clever but pulling a door closed behind them and latching it when they left would beat the most ingenuitive cat. I've no idea what the explanation is though.

Trumptonagain · 20/10/2024 20:54

I'm still surprised that someone unknown has the balls to enter your house during the day while your dog is there...

Gillbil · 20/10/2024 21:00

Definitely get cameras.
Wired in is better but you could buy eufy camera system (only 2cams but its plug and play) for £120 I think.
You could also buy a gopro and just have it running, and see what it gets.
Really hoping it's just a really weird cat sneaking in or something 🤞xx

Do you have one of those extractors in the ceiling in the bathroom? Does it sit above the cistern?
I had some weird drops on my floor and I blamed my partner for missing the toilet turned out to be a leaky extractor

HughGrantsfurrysquirrel · 20/10/2024 21:06

Ok. Confession time! When i was a troubled teen (many moons ago) i used to bunk off school and sneak around a family member's house when they were out.
I would of course help myself to the odd snack from the fridge, use the amenities, and no doubt forget to switch a few lights off!! I took the spare key my mum had to their house and got one cut for myself!
I eventually got found out and was punished accordingly!
Yes i was a cunning brat. Why i did these things is a whole other thread, so won't bore you with the details.
My point is, have you considered that this may be someone related to you sneaking around? Are you sure your partner isn't up to no good while you're out? And what of this ex of yours? Could he have another copy of your key?
Not trying to plant a seed of doubt in your mind. It's just sometimes these things are closer to home than you think.
So pleased to read you're getting your locks changed!!
Very curious to discover the outcome.
Stay safe. Hope you get to the bottom of it all. Xx

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 20/10/2024 21:18

The obvious thing to do is to buy some more cameras so you can monitor the house properly. You need to get to the bottom of it or you’ll never be able to relax at home. And do ask your sister. Not just about the possibility of her being the one moving things, but whether or not she’s noticed anything.

IVbumble · 20/10/2024 21:26

Spread a load of flour about on the floor to look for little ratty footprints whilst you are out.

Contrastinggrassstates · 20/10/2024 21:31

Have you asked your sister if there is any chance someone could have used the key she has or taken a copy? Who does she know that might do this? How old is she? Does she have young friends that might need a bolt hole or any friends that are dodgy or in need? I really do think your sister is the answer here. You are sure it’s not her so my guess is it’s someone she knows or who at least had access to the key.

ThisGreyPanda · 20/10/2024 21:31

We had similar as a teenager. In the end my dad

(late 40s) admitted he had had a go at dying his hair In the bathroom. I know when I dye my hair the cream often looks white when I apply it so I think I've wiped the sink properly and the next day it's developed and gone a deep red colour (even though it's blonde dye).

I reckon the sister has someone in her life that is doing just that

NC543210 · 20/10/2024 21:34

My neighbour in an old house had strange things happening in his house.
Food going missing
Cupboards open etc
Rugs moved
Cushions off the sofa

(No blood and lights though)

Turns out he had 3 rats living under his bath 🤢
Never saw any actual rats/ droppings etc.
They found them when moving the panel to renovate the bathroom.
Along with empty packets of biscuits, cup a soup, bread 🤣🤣 and all the wrappers of the food that had been going missing and even the salt pot he was convinced one of his dc had thrown away accidently.

tirednewmumm · 20/10/2024 21:37

That looks exactly like the blood splatters when my cat had flees! He was scratching and getting them off and making little blood splashes. Grim but better than an intruder
