These threads just remind me how intolerant people are to cultural differences. Yes, language is culture and different cultures will use the English language in different ways. Culture spreads, others pick up on it. Language is fluid. Deal with it.

It’s not like people are submitting their literature essays with: “Dickens was giving big big energy when Scrooge changed his ways; he was a vibe. It had been a minute since he’d felt joy,” I really don’t see the issue.

Agree.

Add in the assumptions on where certain phrases are from and people automatically dismissing and hating them and claiming invasion when often they’re phrases that have been used here in the UK for 30+ years

Instead of saying, to DH, 'do you fancy a mooch round the shopping centre' I asked if he would like a smooch around the shopping centre! He was up for it!😂😂

Love this!

Buzz words of the year

Hot minute .. I cringe when I hear it

Wholesome - I really liked this until every pissing thing is now referred to it 😫

Vibe - it's a vibe, they're a vibe

100% or 110% repeatedly on agreeing with everything

rightoguvnor · 16/10/2024 08:06

Now this may be controversial.

I enjoy a trundle.
I like to have a trundle around town.
I just trundle along minding my own business.
If you like, you could join me for a trundle around the local park.
Just ignore her, just keep trundling along doing your own thing.

A most useful word.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 16/10/2024 08:06

I've always said mooch. "Go for a mooch" usually means go for a wander in the NW.

Didn't realise it was youth speak til i read this thread.

It isn't! It's just people aren't very tolerant of regional dialect and phrases! MN can be weird like that

5128gap · 16/10/2024 08:06

Describing things as wild. You sound like you're 14. Also, "Its not that deep" for the same reason.

rightoguvnor · 16/10/2024 08:07

Also, I'm old school.
I never look like a 'hot mess'
I look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards.

Westfacing · 16/10/2024 08:07

Mooch has been around for yonks - I prefer mooch to pootle which sounds twee!

Thebellofstclements · 16/10/2024 08:08

Isthiscorrect · 16/10/2024 07:20

I hate when someone writes a paragraph they seem to think is difficult or unusual and then adds discuss.
It makes me very cross.

Or after describing a very simple situation, adding IYSWIM or "if that makes sense", when all but an imbecile would understand what they meant.

phoenixrosehere · 16/10/2024 08:14

I don’t hear half of the words and phrases that posters mention unless I’m on social media.

Weird to me to get so annoyed about innocuous words and phrases.

JesusOnAYamaha · 16/10/2024 01:31

The pointless aimless "so" came from David Brent. Twenty five years ago! I agree, it needs to stop.

Also, turning a statement into a question, either via upspeak or written as text. Eg "I'm 24?" Are you asking me or telling me?

Although the French say 'donc' in the same way as 'so', so (!) it seems ubiquitous

Boredforlife · 16/10/2024 08:18

HelenInHeels · 16/10/2024 07:46

Turnt? What on earth does that mean?

People that say “turnt” instead of “turned”
Really pees me off 😂

oakleaffy · 16/10/2024 08:19

My little family.

MaggieBsBoat · 16/10/2024 05:26

I never mooch, I pootle.

Pootle vs mooch; the new MN class wars???!

Popping. Popping to the shop. Popping a meeting in the calendar. Stop Your Popping.

even my pop of colour...?

It's definitely macaroni and cheese. I'm making that tonight for tea. I hate "mac and cheese" with a passion

No, macaroni cheese.

Combattingthemoaners · 16/10/2024 06:34

It will always be tin foil to me!

Yes, aluminium hat does not compare to the rich descriptor that is 'tin foil hat'

GoldenPheasant · 16/10/2024 08:24

Any Americanisms I.e. cops, trash, aluminium foil (it’s fucking tin foil), movies, elevator, candy. I could honestly commit GBH whenever someone uses one of those words.

Surely "cops" is British, from "coppers"?

GoldenPheasant · 16/10/2024 08:25

The one that really has to go is "reaching out" when you mean "talked to" or "contacted".

Off on a tangent to the thread - what is the equivalent of 'bof' in English?

BunnyLake · 16/10/2024 08:26

Mooching, mooching, mooching. I am actually planning on just mooching around the house today as the weather is looking dodgy. I enjoy a good mooch.

Nothing wrong with this word, it’s a good one.

It is macaroni cheese
No 'and' or 'n' at all, in any way, shape or form!

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 16/10/2024 08:28

Period for 'full-stop'
Just yuk
Also, slightly tangentially, 'on my period' How can you be on a period?

oakleaffy · 16/10/2024 08:29

Edited

Is your name 'Minnie'' by any chance?

Minnie the Moocher- are you going to ''Kick the gong around'' later on?
Have to agree the weather is shite here, too.

Edited for maddening predictive text.
