To be annoyed by this parking?

LilyOfTheValley33 · 14/10/2024 09:08

Am I being unreasonable to be annoyed by this parking? We live quite near a school which has no parking and so parents use our road to park on when dropping off/picking up. We get a lot of people parking by/across our drive as per the attached picture. It’s debatable whether it’s actually across our drive, but it makes it tricky to swing out of the drive especially if there is a car parked the other side of the drive too.

I think it's any part of the car, not just the wheels.

correct

I agree; while the driveway looks wide and it should be easy to negotiate coming and going, the car is parked over the drop kerb and, if a traffic warden was in the area, they should quite rightly issue a ticket.

Traffic wardens only issue tickets for blocked curbs installed by the council not ones for access to private properties. You need to complain via your council in that instance. Annoying as it is.

Walkden · 14/10/2024 16:18

The diagonal part of the dropped kerb counts as part of it ( and are normally included into any h bar markings ).

Technically they are obstructing your drive and are being a bit ( but not massively) inconsiderate. Few councils would enforce this though

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 14/10/2024 16:18

Minor niggle, but they're really doing nothing wrong @LilyOfTheValley33 and it wouldn't bother me hugely.

As a pp said though, they are a wee bit across the dropped kerb so they could be breaking a bye-law.

Do they do this all the time, or is it a one-off?

Flossflower · 14/10/2024 16:19

Contact the council and ask if you can have an H bar

Surely you knew about the school when.you bought the house? It's not ideal, but you need to cope with it. Not exactly parking offence of the year.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 14/10/2024 16:21

The dropped area/exit from my drive is probably half the width of yours, you should be able to get out of there no problem. If visibility is an issue why is there a massive hedge? That's more of a safety concern IMO

BIossomtoes · 14/10/2024 16:21

Atishooo · 14/10/2024 09:20

They’re shit at parking either way, about a foot from the curb. My mil parks like this.

That’s nothing like a foot from the kerb. The front wheel’s touching it. It looks fine to me.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 14/10/2024 16:23

Where is the OP? Confused

Sparxdislike · 14/10/2024 16:23

Annoying when this happens to me with my drive as obscures my vision (I reverse in and have a t junction opposite so people shouldn't park outside my house anyway but do).

I don't say anything because it falls on deaf ears and just manoeuvre past. So sigh internally.

Flev · 14/10/2024 16:24

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 14/10/2024 09:41

Also, I presume that you're parking according to the Highway Code and reversing in to your drive?

If you're one of the many people who prefer to make it much more difficult and dangerous for themselves by driving in, so they then have to reverse out, you can't really complain that another driver's parking is restricting your vision when leaving your drive, when that was your own choice.

I'd love to do this but unfortunately I arrive home whilst the school run chaos is going on, meaning I'm always being tailgated by someone and it's therefore impossible to undertake the 4 pt manoeuvre required to get to the right angle to back onto the drive through the tiny gap left between parked cars - all whilst also trying to avoid hitting oblivious teenagers meandering along the pavement. I go out later when the road is clearer to back off, turn around and park "properly"

@Atishooo i was taught to park ‘1 drain’s width’ from the kerb so this photo looks fine to me. Is that not the general advice everyone is given…?

Absolutely not!!

thankfully

Which is why h bar markings are advisory and not enforceable. It’s very irritating I’m sure but… much of life on this island is 😂

Even though it's left zero wiggle room for the car in front? It's virtualy touching the bumper.

CasaBianca · 14/10/2024 16:42

Annoying but to be fair there needs to be a compromise as to how much ‘pavement length’ should be reserved for a single household just because they have a drive. Parking right at the end of the dropped kerb is fine IMO.

CMupnorth · 14/10/2024 16:44

My original image was from a London borough’s enforcement pages one I used to work for so I haven’t named it. (These below are from Thurrock and Bromley). I appreciate different councils may have different thresholds but I haven’t come across one that uses the sloping part of the kerb. Yes H-Bars cover it but H-Bars aren’t enforceable. Traffic Warden’s don’t enforce residential access without a complaint being made (they can’t tell on the face of it if the owner of the vehicle is a resident at the property).

Thankfully I didn’t do this job for very long as phots like the one the OP sent are actually quite hard to use. As you can see there is already a plethora of opinion on how far from the kerb it is. I’d assess the wheels and front and rear are touching the kerb and that it’s near impossible to tell if the rear bumper is in the enforcement area from the angle. But I could be wrong.

If they are parked legally you’re being unreasonable as I’m afraid the rest of the highway doesn’t belong to you or your needs but is governed by laws and bye-laws. Even if it’s a pain in the arse which I agree this might be.

if they are Parker illegally then report and see if you can get a CEO sent down quickly enough to catch it.. not easy.

There should be a white line marking the area where they shouldn't be parking. I can't see whether there's one or not.

orangegato · 14/10/2024 16:49

Moral of the story - don’t live near a school if you want your road to be clear for you to park on. So many of these threads about, yes parents picking their kids up have to leave their cars somewhere and no they don’t give a shit where. What exactly are people hoping for though, the kids to teleport to school or the parents to suddenly care about a foot of space near someone’s drive?

Swissvisa · 14/10/2024 16:51

We get this all the time and we’re not even near a school. That car is fine, annoying to get off the drive I know, but it’s one of those things. YABU to be annoyed.

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 14/10/2024 16:51

CMupnorth · 14/10/2024 16:16

Where we used to live, the traffic wardens were all employed by the council and would ticket anything they could - sometimes somewhat too enthusiastically!!! Any car overhanging a dropped kerb even for private driveways, white H bar or end of a parking bay wand be ticketed.

SoreHeadInBed · 14/10/2024 16:52

looks fine to me - looks like they parked in a rush, probably couldn't find anywhere else to park and late for school pick up. I empathise!

If you don't like that parking, you would hate mine😳

Coconutter24 · 14/10/2024 17:01

They shouldn’t be parked over a dropped curb but equally I really couldn’t get worked up about this, it’s not impossible to get off your drive so YABU.

liquoricetorpedoes · 14/10/2024 17:03

I sympathise as it is annoying. We got a H-bar (and double yellow lines) painted by the council in front of our drive and it’s made a big difference. Could you do something like that?

BIossomtoes · 14/10/2024 17:25

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/10/2024 16:33

We don’t know which car arrived first or how much space there is behind the other car, do we?
