To be annoyed by this parking?

Am I being unreasonable to be annoyed by this parking? We live quite near a school which has no parking and so parents use our road to park on when dropping off/picking up. We get a lot of people parking by/across our drive as per the attached picture. It’s debatable whether it’s actually across our drive, but it makes it tricky to swing out of the drive especially if there is a car parked the other side of the drive too.

YANBU how are you supposed to reverse and get off the drive safely

You don't - you reverse in and then drive off forwards, unless you particularly enjoy making things more difficult for yourself and more dangerous for everybody.

Ihateslugs · 14/10/2024 09:48

Yes, their wheel is overhanging the dropped kerb but the lawn also appears to extend into the dropped kerb so I don’t think they are blocking you from getting out. However, your view of oncoming traffic could be limited so you would need to be careful, as you should anyway in an area of school parking.

Usually on MN you will be told to reverse onto your drive so you can go out forward facing which will make it easier for you.

However, I would be mildly annoyed especially if such parking is a regular occurrence - but then I would never buy a house close to a school!

mamajong · 14/10/2024 09:54

It's annoying but there's probably very little you can do. School run parents are a selfish and entitled group imo, desperate not to have to walk a few extra steps so parking ridiculously, on top of the school. Their justification here is 'everyone does it' as though that somehow makes it OK. I feel for you

Also, I presume that you're parking according to the Highway Code and reversing in to your drive?

If you're one of the many people who prefer to make it much more difficult and dangerous for themselves by driving in, so they then have to reverse out, you can't really complain that another driver's parking is restricting your vision when leaving your drive, when that was your own choice.

Yes!
We always reverse on because it is much more difficult to reverse off with cars parked on the road next to/opposite the drive

caramac04 · 14/10/2024 10:05

It’s fine. Yes a bit more awkward than no vehicle there but perfectly doable.
Theres often a van by my drive which makes visibility more tricky but as long as I’m careful it’s fine. There are way more vehicles than parking and that’s just the way it is.

CMupnorth · 14/10/2024 10:07

The bit of the drop curb that should be avoided is not the sloping bit but the part completely level with the highway. It’s hard to tell from your photo if that’s the case here. But if it’s a driveway dropped curb you’d have to apply to the council for enforcement and in reality a single offence isn’t going to be followed up with.

Parking anywhere else is fine, so it could be annoying but it is legal and sadly if it’s anything like our road the parking is at a premium so hard to get worked up about, (although some neighbours do!) unfortunately even new housing developments don’t seem to take into account that most family homes have two cars now, let alone parking around schools.

This would piss me off too. OK so they're not parked massively over the dropped kerb but they are still over it which is illegal.

Mischance · 14/10/2024 10:24

School parking is very challenging. But there is no problem here. They have left your drive free.

DottieMoon · 14/10/2024 10:30

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 14/10/2024 09:32

Nothing wrong there. Having a drive guarantees you access to your property (as long as nobody blocks it illegally), but that doesn't mean you get as much space as you might like to be able to sweep in and out at leisure; you may well have to manoeuvre your vehicle in order to use the access.

By having a drive (and no beef with that; so do we), you're already taking out of action a potential public parking space on the street (in front of your drive); you can't expect to take out two additional spaces, either side, just to make it super convenient for you.

Completely agree

Wrong. They should not be parking past the dropped kerb.

Moveoverdarlin · 14/10/2024 10:36

How long were they there? Probably about 10 mins max if it was for drop off this morning?

GreenTeaLikesMe · 14/10/2024 10:38

Get residents' parking?

HarrietTheFireStarter · 14/10/2024 10:38

I get a little anxious pulling out because it's difficult to see beyond the parked car, but other than that, no I don't feel annoyed.

People are absurd about parking. They worry more about parking than war or poverty or any number of actual issues. If you go somewhere like Vietnam you will actually die of shock by how they drive and park - yet no-one there wastes a moment's energy getting angry at anyone else. They get that space is for sharing.

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 14/10/2024 10:38

I am intrigued by the 2 conflicting diagrams! Which is correct.

If you can. We have to drive in and reverse out of the drive as it's a shared drive, just enough room for two cars and I have to park as close to the house as possible on one side. If I reversed in that would be the drivers side and I couldn't get out.

CoffeeGood · 14/10/2024 10:43

It's not brilliant, but it's not something I would worry over, you can easily get in and out. They seem to have parked level with the edge of the lawn which I think is okay, especially for a few minutes. I would only be annoyed if it stops you actually getting onto, or off, your drive, which it doesn't.

TickingAlongNicely · 14/10/2024 10:47

Have they actually left space for the car in front of them to get put (or is it then another driveway so that car can drive away?)

queenmeadhbh · 14/10/2024 10:51

I’m surprised by how many people think this is fine. Unless I’m looking at it wrong, the entire back wheel plus some is in the dropped kerb.
in practice if it’s twice a day for short periods of time i would grit my teeth and wiggle round them, but to my mind it’s the same as parking slightly over double yellows - you might get away with it, but can’t claim you were in the right if pulled up on it!

Get residents' parking?

That will never be approved by a school. Parents need to get their kids to school and then carry on to work. They should park considerately but in any area where parking is at a premium everyone needs to maximise every inch available.

MrSeptember · 14/10/2024 11:08

It's anoying, but not really blocking you completely so I'd chalk it up to "irritating, but bearable" myself.

Catza · 14/10/2024 11:11

ViaRia01 · 14/10/2024 09:36

@Atishooo i was taught to park ‘1 drain’s width’ from the kerb so this photo looks fine to me. Is that not the general advice everyone is given…?

Yep, was told the same by my driving instructor.

widelegenes · 14/10/2024 11:13

minisomum · 14/10/2024 09:34

They are parked with their wheel well over the dropped kerb, so technically they are blocking you. Your drive is massive by the looks of it though, so you should have no issues getting on and off it.

I think it's any part of the car, not just the wheels.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 14/10/2024 11:15

Sure I mean be annoyed. They're parked fine.
