To call in sick tomorrow due to an awful dye job?

I mean, I won't but the temptation is huge. I have meetings with people in rooms with very bright lighting 😭

I'm usually a dark blonde colour but decided today that I'd go a shade darker for autumn so that would be light brown naturally.

It's bloody black!!!!

Apart from the horizontal stripes of light brown streaking through every layer that is, I can't even hide it with a ponytail. It's that bad. It's everywhere!

I've been successfully dying my hair for 30 years, since my early teens and haven't had a result like this since I attempted to bleach it.

Any tips? Clearly the box didn't have quite enough to saturate it all the way through, John Frieda mousse manages to cover it all but clearly L'Oréal isn't made for thicker hair. Do I get another box of the same to do it again tomorrow and look witchy for the rest of my life a while? I'm v pale with light eyes so it's not the most flattering. I considered fake tanning but it'd be Sod's Law that my skin would also get a tortoiseshell effect and I'd look totally inept.

On the plus side it's actually covered my greys which usually unheard of. And it's very shiny.

I would wash it repeatedly with Head & Shoulders to see how much of the dye it strip out.

GiddyRobin · 13/10/2024 23:12

I bet it doesn't look as bad as you think! I'm no help at all as I know sod all about hair dye, but hopefully someone will come and give you advice soon.

If it's any consolation, I've got a short French bob with a fringe. Last year I trimmed my own fringe and it was way shorter than usual - above my eyebrows. I was mortified, but I got nothing but compliments and even my hairdresser liked it and tried to make me keep it! We compromised. 😆 I bet it looks fine, it's just a big shock seeing yourself so different!

MartinCrieffsLemon · 13/10/2024 23:13

It would help if we could actually see it...

BabyCloud · 13/10/2024 23:16

Slicked back bun for tomorrow or a French plait.

NotABeliever · 13/10/2024 23:17

Wear a thick hairband and tie your hair back?

SundayBorn · 13/10/2024 23:17

I’ve been there too. Head and Shoulders or Vosene. Alter your make up to distract attention.

StrongFemaleCharacter · 13/10/2024 23:17

It probably doesn't look as bad as you think it is and anyone, no one will be rude enough to comment. Tie it back in a pony tail or bun and wash wash wash with head and shoulders for the rest of the week until it starts to fade.

PaperBee · 13/10/2024 23:19

Google ‘vitamin c hairdye removal’, it worked well for me.

Just editing to add - i’d stay away from dye removers like colour oops though, one use of that wrecked my hair for a long time.

Curryfortea · 14/10/2024 06:33

I would dye it one more time to make it even. I had to do that once and it was better!

Or for tomorrow can you sleek it back into a ponytail.

Newdoggo · 14/10/2024 06:36

Is it too early to blame Halloween?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 14/10/2024 06:37

Sometimes people tamper with the colours in the boxes - can you check the actual bottle to ensure it was the colour from the box?

elderflowerspritzer · 14/10/2024 06:38

Try some washing up liquid to strip it back a bit.

It will need a lot of conditioner afterwards, but it might help.

Fingerscrossedfor2021HK · 14/10/2024 06:39

I heard that fairly liquid fades dark colour - it worked(ish) after I had godawful “highlights” when younger. She had alternated DARK brown dye with bleach on my naturally blonde hair. I had asked for subtle highlights. 🤦🏼‍♀️ several washes with fairy liquid turned my hair to straw but did fade the dark…

ijustneedaminute24 · 14/10/2024 07:40

Thank you all!!

I'll get on the head and shoulders/fairy liquid tonight then maybe re-dye at the weekend.

I mean the state of it. The top was fully saturated, I didn't run out until the ends so there's no reason so much of it went uncoloured underneath. I can see some sparkles still in there too so that's fab.

Maybe a sharpie would work for today

It doesn't look that bad. Can you put it up?

Well, it's not "black", that's for sure. Also, what does it look like with your hair down? Presumably, you are not going to expose the underneath of your hair in a meeting.
Fairy liquid removes colour surprisingly well as an emergency measure.

zzplex · 14/10/2024 07:47

It is a big difference in colour but swish your hair about to mix it up and people either won't notice or think you have extreme highlights.

AgnesX · 14/10/2024 07:48

I think that because you're not used to it you think it's worse than it is. In the pics it really looks ok.

Good idea.

I’d just go to work and if anyone says anything just say it’s meant to look that way.
Act normal and confident.

MaggieBsBoat · 14/10/2024 07:59

Thats not black!!

Whatever you do don’t colour remover. I did and ended up orange.

Funkyslippers · 14/10/2024 08:00

I did an awful dye job a few years ago, much worse than yours. Like a massive block of blonde at the back & not much else! I used a semi permanent dye as advised by my hairdresser, in my natural colour & it worked really well

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 14/10/2024 08:01

Am I the only one that thinks it looks really nice??

Seagall · 14/10/2024 08:03

It's fine.
