To call in sick tomorrow due to an awful dye job?

I mean, I won't but the temptation is huge. I have meetings with people in rooms with very bright lighting 😭

I'm usually a dark blonde colour but decided today that I'd go a shade darker for autumn so that would be light brown naturally.

It's bloody black!!!!

Apart from the horizontal stripes of light brown streaking through every layer that is, I can't even hide it with a ponytail. It's that bad. It's everywhere!

I've been successfully dying my hair for 30 years, since my early teens and haven't had a result like this since I attempted to bleach it.

Any tips? Clearly the box didn't have quite enough to saturate it all the way through, John Frieda mousse manages to cover it all but clearly L'Oréal isn't made for thicker hair. Do I get another box of the same to do it again tomorrow and look witchy for the rest of my life a while? I'm v pale with light eyes so it's not the most flattering. I considered fake tanning but it'd be Sod's Law that my skin would also get a tortoiseshell effect and I'd look totally inept.

On the plus side it's actually covered my greys which usually unheard of. And it's very shiny.

Am I the only one that thinks it looks really nice??

No. I think it looks fab. Sorry op

Attictroll · 14/10/2024 08:04

It's better than some disasters I've had 😂 one thing I've done to hide it before is one of those spray root covers but everywhere to even it out as well as with my longer hair plaiting it in a style so uneven bits aren't as obvious

DrinkElephants · 14/10/2024 08:06

It doesn’t look that bad

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/10/2024 08:09

Back in the 70s, when I was in my 20s, an older woman in the office phoned in to say she's had a slip up colouring her hair and would be in later. She had been giving her grey hair a lilac rinse (as was the thing then) and left it too long. She turned up late with bright purple hair which she had styled with a grey dress and a matching purple necklace. I had the utmost admiration for her chutzpah which is why I still remember it.

Jennifer11 · 14/10/2024 08:13

I think its fine - can't see it would be obvious tied back and it's really shiny. You do not see some of the things I've done to my hair!

Conniebygaslight · 14/10/2024 08:20

OP, many years ago a friend rang me in tears saying she'd had her hair highlighted and it was horrendous and she couldn't leave the house so could I pick her up a box dye. I did and went around, she wouldn't even open the door. When I eventually persuaded her to, I was absolutely staggered. You couldn't even tell she'd had anything done.
I've never forgotten this lesson-people never notice what we do about ourselves.
You'll be perfectly fine.

OldTinHat · 14/10/2024 08:26

It's not as bad as you think it is!

I doubt anyone will notice, everyone is just caught up in themselves anyway.

Waspwine · 14/10/2024 08:26

I second vitamin c (not the chewable) with classic head and shoulders (not the two in one) approach. I’ve used it numerous times to lighten or remove darker box dye colours. It is much less damaging than colour remover and works very well.

  • You crush a bottle of the VC tablets in a bowl to powder consistency.
  • Add a good 1/4 to half a bottle of H&S to the bowl and mix well with the VC powder.
  • Add concoction to damp hair in large sections rubbing it in at roots and tips.
  • Cover with cellophane and leave for an hour.
  • Rinse with warm water.
  • Repeat if needed the next day.
  • Condition once desired shade is achieved as best can be.

Good luck :)! I once tried to tone my newly dyed blonde hair and ended with a luminous green sheen….I had to brave work I had no choice.

Avastmehearties · 14/10/2024 08:28

That's not far off my natural colour! Dark at the root then blonder ends and random natural highlights and light ends. It's's fine, bun @or French plait for work then reconsider later at the shops when you can see what dyes are available. Can you stretch to a professional job or if not, to get a friend to apply the dye? Use two boxes either way xx

daffodilandtulip · 14/10/2024 08:33

I dyed mine a hideous orangey peach once when it was meant to be blonde, and dreaded going into work. Everyone thought it looked lovely and was meant to be like that 🤣

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 14/10/2024 08:39

Looks fine to me - I was expecting something totally different based on your description. You can easily pull that off. I bet most of your colleagues don't even notice anything different.

Crojo · 14/10/2024 08:45

I think it looks nice! I would say it's light brown, not black. A few washes will give it some more tones if it's looking a bit flat. I've always found L'Oréal dyes tend to come out darker than they're supposed to.

Nchanged89 · 14/10/2024 08:57

Yeah, it's not black is it though.

I tried the vitamin C thing a few times and it did nothing. Colour remover I found does work but might turn it a bit ginger because of the small amount of bleach in hair dye and I don't think you are supposed to dye your hair again for a while after using it. If I were you I'd probably get another box and use a brush to try and apply it to the lighter patches first. It's honestly not that bad though, I'm sure no one else will notice

Trallala · 14/10/2024 09:00

If you curl it or wave it the colour variations will be less noticeable. French plait it overnight or do overnight curls with tights or a dressing gown belt (Google or Tiktok will help with these)
Good luck!

Startingagainandagain · 14/10/2024 09:16

It looks like an ashy tone and they can look darker/grey when you first put them on.

It happened to me a couple of times...

I learned to put a mixture of lemon juice and conditioner on mine, leave it for 20 minutes and then rinse and that usually restores the blonde!

Rubyupbeat · 14/10/2024 09:40

Head and shoulders will successfully strip the colour out. Good luck!

rwalker · 14/10/2024 09:43

it looks different to you but it certainly doesn’t look shit

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/10/2024 09:48

Defo could be worse. Colour remover, then a dye over the top, you’ll be fine.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 14/10/2024 09:48

I wouldn't notice a thing unless you are usually flaxen. I have the observation skills of the average man and could not describe to you what anyone was wearing in a meeting I'd just come out of, or distinguishing features unless very in your face.
Sorry but I think you are overthinking this and should get to work! 😉

Though it would be nice to spend the day on the sofa I'll admit

RechargeableGnu · 14/10/2024 10:28

For next time, I'd recommend Light Ash Brown for a light brown colour.

But it really does look fine!

ijustneedaminute24 · 14/10/2024 15:07

Thank you everyone!!

My colleague said it looked nice unless I moved my head too fast 😂

I think it's just a lot darker than I expected and I definitely need to match my eyebrows to it so that's a job for tonight. I'm a very pale person so it's just a big change suddenly. I'll get a new box tonight and try to fill in the blanks so it's at least even. I daren't try a colour remover as it's due a cut and my hair has a tendency to be warmer than I'd like. I'd end up orange and fuzzy which definitely doesn't suit me.

My DD still maintains that it's black.

For some reason due to my phone I can see both pics coming up as rather darker now but it's really not bad at all!! Good condition and shiny. Could you try another box of similar colour (or two) and see how you feel about the colour rather than risk the condition trying to strip it out?

Avastmehearties · 14/10/2024 15:48

Sorry that sounded like faint praise, I mean I like it. Cool dark ash blonde/ light brown depending how it looks under the light.
