Iwishicouldflyhigh · 12/10/2024 10:08

whoever you voted for, what are your thoughts after the First 100 Days?
I didn’t vote for Labour, but I was quite excited in their first few weeks as Keir got his head down and I was excited fir change.

Now I just feel deflated. Same old….freebiegate, nitpicking, infighting. A bit depressing really.

i don’t even think there was a decent alternative really….and that’s even more depressing!!!!!

Anyone who thought that is deluded. The government is planning to save £1.6billion over five years by coming down hard on benefit fraud.

I welcome that. I just wish similar Tory announcements in the past hadn’t been met with Labour claims of the cruelty and ineffectiveness of action against benefit fraud.

Interfering in the US election is abhorrent. Well trying to anyway. I have more chance of being the next president than two accents Harris.

I can’t wait for Trump to kick Starmer right in the balls.

PinkFruitbat · 23/10/2024 21:14

Do you not read the news?

Yes, it’s terrible to use U.K. money to influence a US election. Or isn’t this the case you were thinking of? https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/nigel-farage-used-33000-uk-33952661
Anyone who thinks Trump is a good plan isn’t worth trying to talk to though. His own generals say he’s a fascist, and none of his previous cabinet support him this time.

Nigel Farage used £33,000 of UK donor cash to support Trump in the US election

Under US law, the travel expenses of a volunteer are considered a donation to the party they work for if they exceed $1,000 (£770) in one election

Sadly I wouldn’t be surprised. We all need to prepare ourselves for it - possibly especially those who think he won’t be a disaster.

Both sides have been doing it for years.

Crucially though the Mirror article deliberately misses out what support Farage was offering at the time. He says in that interview; "I'll listen to [Trump's] acceptance speech at the convention on Thursday."

If Labour had been offering a free trip to listen to some speeches in the US there wouldn't be a problem.

There isn’t a problem. All above board and permitted, with precedent for: other governing parties. The only reason that’s all Farage did was because he couldn’t get to see Trump, I heard. Also he said it was to raise the international profile of his constituency. That was a stupidly unbelievable lie, wasn’t it?

PinkFruitbat · 25/10/2024 14:58

Starmer’s “working people” term is so offensive; he is such a sanctimonious hypocrite. Sitting there in his free suits and wearing his free glasses.

How anyone buys into this bullshit is beyond me?

Well the budget looks horrific.

Increased employer NI (+2%), increased capital gains (+25%), increased inheritance tax (less exemptions and more freezes) increased income tax (above £125k) and frozen thresholds all widely circulated in the media; and of course VAT on school fees.

Essentially it is more taxes on the 50% of tax payers who already pay for the whole show; to keep the net 50% tax benefiters in the style and comfort they have become accustom to.

And as the ultimate insult, Labour want to call the 50% who pay for it all; not ‘working people’. We have reached Orwellian hights!

9.4 million working age economically inactive. 12.6 million pensioners. My advice to anyone on a good wage; leave the UK if you can, before you start a family, because this country hates any form of success.

WestwardHo1 · 26/10/2024 10:50

Starmer does seem to have a problem with hitherto obvious definitions doesn't he? I mean until recently it was clear what a woman is, or what a working person is. Someone who works, right? Not so! It's complicated!

This rewriting of definitions to suit political agendas reminds me of what was going on during Covid. It's deeply unsettling.

You have prior sight of the budget? Could you please provide a link for this specific increase in capital gains tax?

PinkFruitbat · 26/10/2024 11:04

‘Working people’ seems to mean ‘people on benefits’. Who knew!

Just saw a headline 'we were clear we would raise taxes'

In their own heads alone but where was the clarity?

ilovesooty · 26/10/2024 11:13

Thank you. As the article says - speculation.
Increasing CGT seems to me to be a perfectly reasonable measure for the Chancellor to consider.

It is all speculation right now. But a good chunk of this will be introduced, pehaps not quite as extreme. They like to float the ideas out early, into the media, and see what sticks.

Increased taxes for those who won’t be paying it always look reasonable.

I will be selling my rental next year. Why TAF should the government get nearly 40% of any capital gains I might make in tax?!?

EasternStandard · 26/10/2024 11:30

Of course, more than reasonable, desirable

As someone who posted there would be tax rises pre GE and got the usual they haven't said that, they won't etc I hope the backlash Starmer gets on 'I was clear' is as big as it should be

Aduvetday · 26/10/2024 11:30

The west is truly fucked and on the decline. The upside is - those of us that can are global. Those who have sat on their arses with their hand open for more and more of people’s money will have no where left to go.
