Hummus lids

Carrotmccarrotface · 11/10/2024 15:59

Sainsbury’s seem to have stopped putting lids on their hummus. I assume it’s to reduce their plastic footprint but I don’t have any reusable lids so am using cling film. Is there somewhere we can buy these lids?

Google 'reausable silicone lids' 👍

shesamarshmallow · 11/10/2024 16:01

Just put it in a Tupperware.

Carrotmccarrotface · 11/10/2024 16:14

Thanks to both of you!

Same in tesco with mascapone cheese.

PurpleHiker · 11/10/2024 16:33

Same with coleslaw but I find that small beeswax wraps work well instead.

NoodleNuts · 11/10/2024 16:33

Same with the smaller tubs of coleslaw. I don't have similar size plastic tubs to transfer it to, even if I wanted to, which I don't.

StillAtTheRestaurant · 11/10/2024 16:34

I am also annoyed about this, so I have vowed just to buy my hummus elsewhere. Morrisons still do lids. I appreciate that's not a practical option for everyone though!

marshmallowfinder · 11/10/2024 16:36

Amazon or Ebay OP. They have everything.

elrider · 11/10/2024 16:36

Yes! I've been complaining to DH about this after getting Sainsburys hummus this week! I don't mind no lids, but the ones I reuse for yoghurt pots don't fit! I don't use cling film but DH bought some recently and it doesn't seal properly (not sticky enough, I suppose) so lets air in. So I have nothing that works. A heads up would have been good and I'd have saved a few, but really they should all use the same size lid - there's no need for it to be any different to a big yoghurt tub lid.

ahemfem · 11/10/2024 16:37

Lidl still do lids!

elrider · 11/10/2024 16:43

You inspired me to do some digging while I remember and it looks like Sainsbury's do offer a potential solution for £1:

I've added it to my next order.

beasmithwentworth · 11/10/2024 16:43

You are the third person to start a thread on this. I was one of the others. I totally agree with you and whilst there are obviously lots of possibilities.... cling film, silicon lids, decanting into Tupperware (assuming you have lids to fit them I don't) , putting a saucer on top etc

It's just the hassle factor. I hope sainsburys are taking note. There was an article in the guardian about it too!

Chypre · 11/10/2024 16:49

Silicon lids! Usually sold in assorted sizes, as a set. Now halved lemons and onions also get a lid in this household. Also canned olives, beans etc.

Pleiades2020 · 11/10/2024 16:57

Someone on one of the other threads had a good idea, put the hummus pot inside some tupperware (I.e. don't bother decanting).

Also save any plastic food packaging that fits.

Afriendwithbreastsandalltherest · 11/10/2024 16:58

Yogurts have been this way for a long time, it's frustrating when you get home from doing the shopping and its split!

Areolaborealis · 11/10/2024 17:16

Although I appreciate Sainsbury's efforts to reduce plastic, some of the fresh items are no longer sealed properly because the flimsy film covering burst open too easily. I like to check the seal before using and find many are not airtight. My worry is contamination and bacteria growth because I don't know how long they've been sitting open.

Also disappointed about the organic hummus. I bought it specifically because of the lid. I now place the tub in a sandwich bag.

Agree with this

Octopusgreen · 11/10/2024 17:33

This irritates me too - I don’t have similar size boxes and I don’t really want to buy wraps to put over them and I don’t use cling film .. currently using plastic sandwich freezer bags which were an occasional use but now aren’t - so it’s made my plastics use worse !

This 100% …

Ibloodylovetea · 11/10/2024 17:36

I stopped buying cling film years ago (much to DH's frustration) but it's so bad for the environment as can't be recycled.

Noodlesmumm · 11/10/2024 17:36

And large pots of yoghurts

Carrotmccarrotface · 11/10/2024 17:38

I guess they are happy as long as it’s our plastic footprint not theirs. Looks better in their annual accounts. The y really ought to stack a pile of purchasable lids next to the hummus to remind us (to buy hummus, and infact our whole shop) elsewhere.

when it comes to cling film, I think the cling film that worked was deemed not environmentally friendly so now you can just buy the crap stuff.

OP posts:
BiscuitlyBoyle · 11/10/2024 17:39

Yes large pots of yoghurt.

Octopusgreen · 11/10/2024 17:41

I think they want us to use it all in one go and therefore buy more …I suppose the other options is the little multipack of four if they still do those

Paperclipp · 11/10/2024 17:47

Co-op's still have lids & they fit the Sainsburys pots so I wash them & keep them for re-use on Sainsburys/Waitrose fresh pesto pots which also only come with a film.
Incidentally Co-op hummus is delicious - won the 'good housekeeping' taste test
