Hummus lids

Sainsbury’s seem to have stopped putting lids on their hummus. I assume it’s to reduce their plastic footprint but I don’t have any reusable lids so am using cling film. Is there somewhere we can buy these lids?

That doesn't keep the air out

Or prevent it from falling out in your handbag, which is what mine did last week. Nice.

I’m utterly fed up of crap packaging making me waste food. This week I’ve had to sling a large Greek yogurt that wasn’t air tight and had gone mouldy and a wedge of Brie that hadn’t been properly sealed and smelt very suspicious when fully opened (sour, not cheesy). Last week it was a packet of sausages that had that flimsy plastic top that had split open at some point - had no idea if it was prior to or after purchase, so they had to go. Drives me mad.

Ok, so not on your level of pain, but I have just been having a my regular argument with a packet of anti bacterial wipes and it reminded me of this

The packaging makes it IMPOSSIBLE to get one out at at time they all bunch up and pull out. The packaging makes it IMPOSSIBLE to seal up again in a way that means they dont dry out

And my own layer of complexity is that I have a OH who has no patience with it at all and simply rips the thing open any old which way, right down the side or front, not using the little sticky opening (which is rubbish anyway)

Dried out. DRIED RIGHT OUT.

I now put them in a sandwich bag with a zip lock but it doesnt really solve all of the problems.

I can't help with the first one but with the second one - squeeze the air out of it before you reseal it and then after each use put it with the opening side face down on to the shelf. If you reseal it properly (assuming you havent ripped round the seal) this works well.

I find they come out one at a time for a bit but then at some point about two thirds into the pack you get a big bunch. happens like clockwork.

soupfiend · 15/10/2024 18:45

When you say the second one, do you mean the paragraph about my partner

Squeeze the air out of him? I think that might work

Pleiades2020 · 16/10/2024 17:23

Changing the subject slightly the thread made me do some research and apparently you should only keep hummus open for a max of 2 days, after which it becomes potentially dangerous. I'm sure I never did this and ate hummus more than 2 days old, maybe up to 4, and apparently I have a hyper strong immune system because of this. Which I strongly doubt. Anyone else eaten hummus after the 2 day cut off? How long does homemade hummus last? I'm doubting my own fridge etiquette now.

Onagoldenautumnday · 16/10/2024 17:34

Oh @soupfiend you're me!
And incredibly you're married to my partner!
PM me when you've perfected how to squeeze the air out.
TIA

Onagoldenautumnday · 16/10/2024 17:37

And I'm another who cannot get on with silicone.
It feels greasy and tacky and has to drenched in Fairy Liquid and washed at 2000° to feel clean.

Thighdentitycrisis · 16/10/2024 19:25

I got a silicone lid in Sainsbury’s!

Yes large pots of yoghurt.

oh now I thought it was just because we shopped at cheap Aldi that the cottage cheese and big yogurt had no lid. I just leave both open to the elements in the fridge.

Ethylred · 16/10/2024 19:40

Make your own hummus. It really is not hard and you have control over the ingredients.

I buy a couple of different brands. One has ‘eat within 2 days’ on the lid. The other had nothing.

I guess they are happy as long as it’s our plastic footprint not theirs. Looks better in their annual accounts. The y really ought to stack a pile of purchasable lids next to the hummus to remind us (to buy hummus, and infact our whole shop) elsewhere.

when it comes to cling film, I think the cling film that worked was deemed not environmentally friendly so now you can just buy the crap stuff.

They do! I noticed the other day in Sainsbury's that they had silicone lids hanging in one of the aisles.
But I hoard stuff that "might come in useful one day" and so I was able to dig out an old pot and now I reuse the lid 😇

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/10/2024 06:41

Ramona's Houmus comes in proper reusable pots with proper lids.

sashh · 17/10/2024 08:58

silicon lids or put the entire put in Pyrex with a lid or Tupper ware.
