Hummus lids

Carrotmccarrotface · 11/10/2024 15:59

Sainsbury’s seem to have stopped putting lids on their hummus. I assume it’s to reduce their plastic footprint but I don’t have any reusable lids so am using cling film. Is there somewhere we can buy these lids?

Moopops are an answer. I have them for my milk bottle but I’ve only just discovered that they do yoghurt ones too. www.moopops.co.uk/shop

Brefugee · 11/10/2024 17:53

old jam jars are good?

muddyford · 11/10/2024 18:11

They did the same with their cream and yoghurt ages ago. Jolly annoying as clingfilm doesn't seal as well. Just virtue-signalling - so much stuff in unnecessary plastic that they carry on sellng.

The issue is that the hummus pots aren't the same width as the yoghurt pots so most of the reusable lids sold won't fit. I linked upthread a stretchy one that I think will work. I can report back next week if it does!

I love mumsnet- I have been quietly fuming about this and now find out that it has guardian coverage and loads of people are equally outraged! Morrisons and Lidl for my houmous then.

Ladyof2024 · 11/10/2024 19:06

Also Waitrose potato salad, as I've found out today.

Lots of lid options on Amazon.

DiscoBeat · 14/10/2024 12:59

I just use stretchy silicone lids

frijolito · 14/10/2024 13:10

Waitrose and M&S hummus still have lids

JazzieC · 14/10/2024 13:26

I've been quietly muttering to myself about this too - very pleased to see it's not just me!! Tesco have stopped the lids too and it's driving me nuts.

showmethegin · 14/10/2024 13:31

Just buy ramonas hummus; it's 10 times nicer, has a lid and is sold in Sainsburys

MonCoeur · 14/10/2024 13:34

I just decant my hummus into Tupperware tub these days, although the jalapeno hummus I just bought from Morrisons still has a proper lid.

Auburngal · 14/10/2024 13:47

I’m sure reducing plastic on certain items in supermarkets has increased waste -both the supermarket and the customer.

My previous employer stopped wrapping boxes of tea bags in plastic a while back yet they came in all open. Hardly had to dispose or reduce them when wrapped in plastic. Same goes for loo roll as now in paper wrapping.

Customers find that if using cling film or foil to cover opening- food goes off quicker than using the former supplied lid.

Auburngal · 14/10/2024 13:49

I remember putting out a case of some product on the shelf and said “now in plastic free packaging” yet the case was wrapped in, plastic!

MissSueFlay · 14/10/2024 13:53

This is exactly the kind of thing we need to be looking at to reduce our single-use plastic consumption. We've mostly got used to taking shopping bags with us now, this is another version of that. Surely it's not so massively inconvenient to source some reusable stretchy lids that will fit a lot of different pots? There's a lot more massively inconvenient things ahead precisely because of our love of things like single-use plastic lids!

Auburngal · 14/10/2024 13:58

@MissSueFlay charges to carrier bags have been in place for 9 years (England) and still get people who NEVER go shopping without a bag!

MissSueFlay · 14/10/2024 14:04

@Auburngal, yes but plastic bag usage has fallen by 98% since 2014 (according to Gov.uk). Some people will always forget or just need one on the odd occasion, but that's huge behaviour change that has made a substantial difference to our single-use plastic use.
This lids thing won't just be UK either, it will eventually come in everywhere.

soupfiend · 14/10/2024 14:14

Ive got a lot of those silicon lids but they always feel tacky/greasy/sticky to me, make me feel sick

I have a lot of plastic pots and freeze hummous quite a lot, I have some frozen now, its too easy for it to sit there hidden and then go off

JazzieC · 14/10/2024 14:15

I'll be decanting all the way from now on!

Its a lot more expensive. Nice if you can afford it though

TheHotelInspectorsPocket · 14/10/2024 15:31

Yet again its cost cutting madness that affects us all negatively dressed up as some eco-friendly bullshit.

A microbiologist has warned that bacteria are more likely to grow in hummus that is kept refrigerated without airtight lids after two supermarket chains got rid of the plastic caps.
Tesco and Sainsbury’s earlier this month stopped selling hummus pots with plastic lids to cut down on single-use plastic but insisted that this change had no impact on shelf life. Instead, they are now selling the dip with a thin sheet of plastic that is peeled off and cannot be reused, similar to packaging used for some yoghurts.
Primrose Freestone, professor of clinical microbiology at the University of Leicester, warned that storing hummus without airtight lids could lead to food poisoning. She said: “Hummus, or any fresh dip, is not sterile so by default will have microorganisms. Having that plastic lid would have helped exclude oxygen getting into the hummus and stimulating growth of anything that might be present. In terms of food safety, it does have some implications.”

The solution is to shop at Waitrose which still does lids.

On a similar theme, just seen that they are now selling tubeless loo rolls - saves that cost of making the cardboard tube but a shitty roll that as it gets towards the end is a state.

Food safety alert over plans to ditch lids on tubs of hummus

MailOnline exclusively broke the news earlier this week that Tesco had made the drastic call this month to ditch the plastic, getting rid of more than 31 million pieces from its stores.

Or just leave in open pot and place the whole thing in a tupperware box? No scraping or mess!

Yes I do this with open tins of tuna and small tins of half eaten beans, then quietly the pot goes back in the cupboard (OH would wash the cat in the dishwasher given half a chance, this would be his version of 'dirty')

JazzieC · 14/10/2024 18:59

Well, I've just had a fight with my Tupperware drawer and now my hummus pot is housed in an old takeaway container, as are all my open packets of cheese, and the mackerel pate (different containers). I'm sitting on my hands now so I don't go on a Tupperware spending spree on Amazon.
