Hummus lids

Carrotmccarrotface · 11/10/2024 15:59

Sainsbury’s seem to have stopped putting lids on their hummus. I assume it’s to reduce their plastic footprint but I don’t have any reusable lids so am using cling film. Is there somewhere we can buy these lids?

@soupfiend - you've sealed my fate, I need those boxes in my life/fridge! Amazon Tupperware haul it is.

Yes I do this with open tins of tuna and small tins of half eaten beans, then quietly the pot goes back in the cupboard (OH would wash the cat in the dishwasher given half a chance, this would be his version of 'dirty')

Does putting an opened can make the food taste metallic?

Your life will never be the same again, sliced meats, some chunks of cheese (the posh ones that come in small amounts), salmon in those silly flat packets, all slippy slidey and greasy. Prawns in the flat packet, if you squish them in well

They are incredible.

Not that Ive noticed, its no different to putting it in the fridge and putting a silicone lid on it

ErrolTheDragon · 15/10/2024 07:45

During lockdown for a while I was making egg custard in cups as I couldn't get yogurt (till I realised I could make that too). I used foil to cover them, with a bit of care it could be washed and reused many times before going in the recycling. Wouldn't that work for hummus pots?

Best solution, obviously, is to make your own and put it in a 'Tupperware'.Grin

rainfallpurevividcat · 15/10/2024 10:49

I do find it odd that they have focused on food that actually keeps for a few days if you have a lid for it rather than stopping wrapping fruit and veg in a fuckton of unnecessary plastic.

I tend to think it looks "green" but it's just greenwashing and actually a ruse to get people to buy more houmous/dairy stuff as it's going off faster.

I stopped buying cling film years ago (much to DH's frustration) but it's so bad for the environment as can't be recycled.

It can where we live now (changed a couple of years ago) - check your council’s kerbside collection, which may be different to your county council’s rules if they run the local recycling centre.

If one was terribly cynical, one might think that its by design that more food will go off so you have to throw it out quicker and buy more......

Of course I would never be that cynical

And that fuckton of plastic on those fruit and veg make them go off sooner as well.

Cynical? Moi?

The moaning about this is pathetic. People on the radio making out this is an actual problem. No wonder we are in trouble...
Just use a bit of clingfilm / foil / put in an old take away container or some cheap Tupperware.

"No wonder we are in trouble" -😅

Yes because some little plastic lids on our tiny island that are highly convenient, stop food going off and being wasted are a massive problem that will be the difference between a new ice age or a golden future. People are insane. This is massively inconvenient if you buy that product (like I said switch to Waitrose who still have them) but utterly pointless in the 'save the planet argument'. It doesn't even class as tinkering around the edges.

It's about the companies saving money on cutting out the cost of plastic but they get to pretend to stupid sheep like people that its a save the planet move. China alone is responsible for nearly 30% of carbon emissions if you care about this stuff.

Yeah but I bet they dont provide lids on their hummous do they?

The chinese are probably way ahead of the UK in that respect!!!!

Cowrie · 15/10/2024 11:51

I keep and reuse salsa jars (the short fat ones) for things like homemade hummus, mayo and other dips. Agree that the lack of lids is a PITA

(if you have a blender it takes minutes to make your own hummus and it’s much nicer in my humble opinion).

TheHotelInspectorsPocket · 15/10/2024 12:02

The working masses are probably just all eating state sponsored slop in their £1 a day factory.

MissSueFlay · 15/10/2024 12:09

@TheHotelInspectorsPocket
It won't just be us on our tiny little island, and it won't just be lids on hummus and other dips. It's part of long term behaviour change to stop us leaving our kids a planet full of crap. I find it utterly depressing that something as minor as lids on pots of hummus can provoke such a push-back on the grounds of it being 'inconvenient'. That's the problem, right there, not a film of plastic replacing a lid.

Lidl still do lids!

I should darn well hope so, too!

I was joking in line with your comment about the difference a hummous lid makes or not

I think this is the case. It has to be eaten all in one go or faff about with it

Jk987 · 15/10/2024 16:58

A bit of hassle is worth it for the environment surely!? I can't believe the people saying they'll boycott it!

Don't you just peel back the film without pulling it off? Then flap it back again?

Jk987 · 15/10/2024 16:59

It's fine uncovered for a few days.

Thats no good in the game of fridge tetris. You need hard surfaces to put other things on, and then other things on top of that
