My baby has fallen victim to North Korean propaganda!

I left my 17 month old baby at my mother's home when I went to a afternoon party with DH, and left DD17mo with my tablet, opened on the youtube app.

I come home, and some strange music is playing, and DD is clapping along happily and swaying a bit, and my mother is smiling, swaying along + cooking a casserole.

I peer at what's playing on the tablet, and it's this:

My current guess is that it appeared as a recommended video and DD tapped it (she's good with these things - even laptops!)

DM was singing 'key shown oon' along (she's not really in touch with current affairs/news, had no idea this was a dictator, and thought it was some sort of ad DD had looped.)

Then I was scrolling the BBC on my laptop, with DD beside me, and she sees Kim, and starts smiling and giggling.

I'm not sure if I should be irritated or amused Grin

All our mothers did nothing of the sort. Very little about Pebble Mill at One or Crown Court to interest a baby.

Watch with mother
Playschool
Jackanory
Rainbow
Cbeebies
Mr Benn
Bagpuss
Tales from the riverbank
Zootime

No, definitely nothing for kids there. I must have dreamed it.

Why the fuck would you leave your dd with a tablet when she is a baby??

How do you think other parents managed before tablets????

TV ?

TV ?

Brandy probably for mum and child.

If DD gets hold of some scissors and you come back to find her and your DM with really dodgy haircuts , a radio battened to the kitchen wall pumping out 24/7 propaganda, and are making the entire neighbourhood swear allegiance to them, you might want to think about putting a lock of YouTube OP. If not, try balance her viewing out with other dictators. Apparently I loved listening to Brezhnev, Kim Il Sung and Fidel Castro at your DDs age. I’ve gone on to have a rewarding life and was an excellent parent myself. I had zero problems with obedience, my kids bedrooms were spotless, they ironed their own school uniforms by 5 and would eat absolutely anything, They were fluent in Mandarin and Russian by 6 thanks to their bedtime favourites, The Little Red Book and State And Revolution. Honestly kids are just pandered to these days with mindless silliness such as Blippi and Peppa Pig. And the latter can be very dictatorial at times.

The title is a joke.

And nah, my mum's not a fan of political things. She doesn't even look at the bbc, just the local paper's website.

Not very funny given that real people are subjected to this propoganda every day, and live incredibly restricted, harsh lives, most people at starving point.
Oh yes, hilarious
But go for that laugh, why not

ivykaty44 · 06/10/2024 07:20

Loved Mr Benn

liveforsummer · 06/10/2024 07:22

Oh god you found the fun squad on a Saturday night OP. I thought it was funny. A bit of YouTube so you can get a rare couple of hours out isn't going to hurt. Hopefully her dictator led brainwashing won't change the course of her life either 😅

AnywhereAnyoneAnyTime · 06/10/2024 07:26

Opinions on screen time aside, it is concerning to leave a 19 month old with unsupervised access to YouTube.
It is amusing that she was dancing to that song, but it could so easily have something violent, or explicit, and no-one was supervising.

But OP wasn’t laughing at any of that was she ?

Walrusdress · 06/10/2024 07:27

Is it so unreasonable for people to say that letting a 17 months old watch YouTube isn't good for the child? No-one is asking for her to be a perfect parent.

I would imagine that if something like that had appeared, her DM would have shut it down - from OP’s description she was supervising enough to sing along, so was clearly aware of what was on the screen.

Wilfrida1 · 06/10/2024 07:32

It was a catchy tune that your baby was moving to. If it had been on CBBC no one would have given a monkey's.

Best check parental controls though!

This is just nasty.

oneandonlygreg · 06/10/2024 07:38

Oh dear here comes the screen free brigade 🙃.
You neglectful mother, leaving your toddler to watch something on a screen while you try to make dinner/wash/have a hot drink.
Your child falling victim to North Korean propaganda is the least of your worries. I'm pretty sure that because they have screen time, they'll end up bottom of the class and addicted to drugs.

This made me laugh so much. Your mum swaying along 😂. I left my 2 yo DD with my mum last week and she had put on one of those fake peppa pig videos and peppa was doing a poo in the pool 🫠. We now have a no YouTube policy when she's at my mum's house!

Tracyblot · 06/10/2024 07:38

Coruscations · 06/10/2024 06:36

Nonsense. I was putting DS in front of the TV 40 years ago (original Thomas the Tank Engine, he loved it). It was great for his vocabulary development, and he's done very well indeed subsequently, socially, academically and career-wise.

A TV show made for children where the child is unlikely to be able to just turn it over to something unsuitable, ot a social media platform whereby anyone can upload anything they want whereby the child can click themselves apparently - not really similar. I'm not bothered about screens really, YT is awful for children though.

If they can press a button on a laptop they can press a button on a remote control.

Or not a mother at all.

I was like that as well before I had DD -

'I'll never use the iNanny, never buy precooked baby food, all organic homemade and beige wood toys!''

All flew out of the window as soon as DD opened her mouth to cry for the first time Grin

I never get why people don’t believe that others have babies or kids that don’t watch TV. My first didn’t watch TV unless she was sitting watching with us till she went to school. My second I left watching with her sister for an hour or two occasionally during Covid when she was tiny. I don’t think it’s the be all and end all or it makes me perfect. I do many sub optimal things (we all do I’m sure) but honestly it’s entirely possible to avoid kids watching tablets if you don’t want them to. I’d ignore anyone suggesting it makes them better behaved or more able to sit still at dinner etc though. If that’s true dread to think what my two would be like if I’d allowed them free reign.

BarbaraHoward · 06/10/2024 07:46

The North Korea thing is kinda funny, but sorry I'm another one whose overwhelming response was about the baby with unrestricted access to YouTube.

OP if you're going to let the baby select videos then you need to get on board with parental controls. I'm not convinced your mum would've been providing proper supervision - vivid memories of stopping PIL putting Family Guy on for primary school aged DNs (it's a cartoon!). Not to mention one of said DNs watching appropriate videos on a phone but interrupted by ads for an 18s videogame.

If your mum wants a helping hand to keep the baby entertained, get her to put cbeebies on the TV. You'll know it'll be suitable, and it's a bit more passive because the baby can't keep clicking next.

This has made me laugh so much, particularly the thought of mum singing along! People getting judgy, calm down!

This! What is the matter with all the po faced miseries here?!

My personal favorite response is the Uber virtuous signaling, seriously intoned ‘Not much less funny than North Korea’.

I mean, thats a parody response, surely?!

Inslopia · 06/10/2024 07:54

It’s standard for a Saturday evening, presumably the posters are bored & lonely. Maybe they need to relax on the screen time & get themselves Netflix!

Just use YouTube kids?

BeMintBee · 06/10/2024 08:09

sunnyinthevalley · 05/10/2024 23:42

So do all my friends, and so did all our mothers!

You can't expect me to be a perfect mummy always carrying around DD or finding infinite toddler activities for the kiddo.

It's not possible.

you can be as blasé as you like and convince yourself you’re just like all your other mummy friends and console each other that you are just doing your imperfect best but honestly the damage that’s happening to kids because they are being shoved in front of iPads and phones is immeasurable. There’s a huge difference between an hour of CBeebies a couple of times a day than tapping away at “shorts” on you tube.

Sorry but you should feel bad that you are giving an ipad to a 17 month old you really should.

littleredcaravan · 06/10/2024 08:12

Ignore all the judgy cunts OP.

They spend so much time criticising other people they have no awareness of their own faults.
