Neighbour snores loudly enough to wake us up

Title says it all really: our downstairs neighbour snores so loudly that we can hear it at night, and it regularly wakes both me and DW up (DW moreso than me as she is a light sleeper). For context, neighbour is on the ground floor and we live on the first floor of a converted Victorian building, so the walls are reasonably thick! This week has been particularly bad, to the point that it actually sounded like he was in the room with us. What on Earth do we do?! Sometimes I'm tempted to put a letter through the door saying we can hear the snoring and suggesting he go to the doctor, because it can't be healthy to be making that kind of sound while trying to breathe in your sleep...

@tortoisewoman do you have a separate living room or is it open plan? If so I'd swap your living room and bedroom over so you're not directly above him.

I had that on holiday once. The walls must have been so thin in the apartament. I could hear snoring. Sound really does travel.
I would not put a note through the door though.

What on earth do you think the council will do about someone's snoring?

Same thing they'd do about any regular loud noise?

Loud snoring is harmful to the both the snorer and those who have to put up with. Just because it’s not ‘on purpose’ does not mean nothing can be done about it. There is plenty a snorer can do and it will greatly improve their health and quality of life and that of those around them. Long term Sleep deprivation is a serious issue. It’s so weird that anyone would deny that.
