Why do people post every single day about their holiday on Facebook?

PassingStranger · 04/10/2024 13:18

You know the ones who go away and give you a blow by blown account every day on what they are doing, where they are eating etc, sometimes multiple times a day.
Are friends expected to read it all and like every single post?

What happened to privacy, what happened to telling people about it when you get home?
Not against it totally, but several times a day, what's wrong with them?
They seem unable to enjoy a holiday without broadcasting every single thing. It's horrible the way FB has got to some people!!

Surely it is only common sense for people to realise that if they tell the whole world that they are away on holiday, their home is unattended for a week or two and an ideal target for burglars.

Don't waste your breath. No matter how many different ways people are told this, and that it can invalidate their insurance if they're burgled, after announcing (on social media) that they are away from their home on holiday, some people just aren't listening. They won't admit they're wrong.

You can't get though to people who are too arrogant and ignorant to admit they may be wrong... Let them stick their fingers in their ears, go la la la, and bury their head in the sand. They can't say they weren't warned.

This.
I post for me, as I like to look back at what I've done and where I've been, memories popping up.
I like interacting with people too, love seeing my friends posts. Clue's in the name. SOCIAL media.
If you don't like, nobody's forcing you to look.
Never understand people who whinge about what others post and don't want to see their updates - they're your friends, surely. Unless you're one of those who just collect randomers they've never met.

Edited

The people who moan about other people's FB... I do wonder what they post on their own. They must deem it the "proper" way to do FB.

I love holiday photos on Facebook, especially if they are of somewhere I’ve never been. All of my friends on Facebook are friends in real life, why wouldn’t I be interested in their photos?

PonyPatter44 · 05/10/2024 22:18

@SabreIsMyFave you still haven't explained how people who don't know me IRL, aren't friends with me on FB, and cant get onto my locked-down FB are going to figure out my address from a photo of my holiday. I am intrigued.

I've just done some sleuthing on a former work colleague's FB, and I am BUGGERED if I can find out her home address. I can see her current workplace, I can see where she's been on holiday this year, I can find out the names of her grandchildren. I can't find out her home address though. Burglars really aren't sophisticated enough to cross check FB with the electoral roll (and both she and I are on the closed roll anyway).

mjf981 · 05/10/2024 22:20

The ‘here I am in the first class lounge’ or ‘here I am in business class drinking champagne’ (often with the boarding pass in view to prove it) make me cringe.

Are they bragging? Are they insecure? Or am I jaded?!

I like seeing what my friends are doing, their holidays, even what they're having to eat for dinner 😁
You're jaded.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 06/10/2024 06:08

I’m laughing at some of the posts confidently stating people’s home insurance will be invalidated and they’re likely to be burgled. Presumably these are the same people who give dire warnings not to give out your sort code and account number as someone will set up a massive direct debit and clear out your bank account 😂.

Most insurance policies have a clause about “failure to take reasonable precautions to secure your home when away”, which can include post on social media yes, but also things like not having lights on a timer, curtains closed etc. IF (and it’s a big if) an insurance company did reject a claim on this basis, it’s not just tough shit, it’s a regulated industry and therefore the claimant can appeal and the ombudsman would make the final decision. I cannot find a single case where this has actually happened, which tends to suggest at the least it is extremely rare.

As many PP have said, most people have locked down Facebook so it’s not different to telling friends anyway. I know a PP was jumping through hoops to explain how you could give your address away inadvertently but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone post a car reg (would need DVLA data base access to trace this way) or address from a parcel on Facebook, most people do have at least some common sense around internet security.

Most burglaries are highly opportunistic from petty thieves, not people scouring friends of friends facebook to see who’s on holiday and then checking whether they’re really not there. Someone could just as easily do this with a lot less hassle by simply watching your house for a day or so (which would also identify your usual work pattern and when you’re out). The obvious exception is if you’re very rich or you’ve got a lot of valuables which are clearly in your house, which makes it more likely it’s going to be a planned job, would expect these people to be taking more security precautions anyway!

Oh and even if a would be burglar managed to work out where I lived and plan a burglary, they’d be in for a nasty surprise as we have big dogs and therefore a dog sitter when we go away.

Totally agree with all of this. I don’t even have my real name on fb!

And why do people post pictures of their meals? Who cares? 🤷‍♀️

God people are so miserable.

Would just like to say loud and clear to KEEP POSTING PICTURES OF NICE RESTAURANT MEALS! Love seeing them. And they're tremendously helpful in terms of recommendations. Nothing beats word of mouth when deciding what restaurant to go to.

ThePoshUns · 06/10/2024 08:59

I used to be a police officer ( CID) I have never been to a burglary whereby the offender broke in a a a result of seeing someone on holiday on FB.

Fathercrispness · 06/10/2024 09:05

Nobody is expecting you to read or like anything. Some people like to use their facebook as a sort of photographic diary that they can share with their friends. It probably becomes a habit. Spending even half an hour per day on holiday on facebook while lounging by the pool surely doesn’t ruin any enjoyment of the holiday.

Singleandproud · 06/10/2024 09:12

If you don't like it, un follow them.

It is quite possible that you are not the intended audience. It could be intended for family members at home to let them know they are safe and what they've been up to. It might be for the poster themselves as a diary update so it pops up as "This time 10 years ago" memory. It might just be as a photo repository incase they lose their phone.

They could change their privacy controls but why? (other than the house insurance issue which is very valid but not everyone's house is empty when they are away) The people on their social media should care about them and what they do and if you don't,it is perhaps time to trim your social media connections.

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 06/10/2024 09:15

I have 2 relatives that do this then get all huffy when they don't get the likes/endorphin hit they expect. I've muted them after day 1. I do always ask what they've been up to when we meet up - so they can summarise their fb! 😂 Would rather hear a summary in real life than scroll through reams of boring photos!

Teentrauma · 06/10/2024 09:21

I generally like seeing holiday photos and post them myself (more because I use fb like a diary for myself and like to see the memories come up than for the benefit of others). If someone is travelling around doing different things each day, then I look forward to the next instalment. If they're spending two weeks sat round a pool in an anonymous all inclusive, I'll scroll past the first few. I posted 3 times during a 10 day villa holiday - a couple of trips out (boat trip & tourist attaraction) and a few pics at the end as a round up of the holiday. Someone I know gives a blow by blow account of their entire holiday, the airport, the flight, the plane meal, 100s of photos of the resort and every meal, the flight back etc. Another friend who goes on expensive holidays will post from the exec lounge, photos of the hotel room, that's just showing off!

I'm in the camp that you don't need to worry about your house being burgled or invalidating insurance unless you have an unsecured fb account or criminals as friends!

Everyone keep posting their meals please!
Although what is annoying is if you post your dinner and don't say what it is, or where you are.
I like to know what the dish is please 😁

TwistedWonder · 06/10/2024 09:52

I’ve just been on holiday and posted photos of my holiday in a reel every couple of days. Me and my friends enjoy seeing each other having fun plus for me FB is like my photo diary of nights out and holidays with memories popping up reminding me of good times.

I don’t share anything other than photos - if people don’t like it scroll on by but I’ll carry on using my FB as I please.

Trust me dear, we're laughing at you too.

Also, I said NOTHING about people getting robbed whilst posting pics of the food they're eating whilst out at a restaurant for a few hours. Even though posting pics of the food you're eating on Facebook and Instagram - while you are eating the meal in the restaurant - is a whole new level of attention-seeking batshit.

As I said, you do you. Carry on posting multiple photos on social media, whilst away from home for days on end, and giving out bank details to people. I am literally goggled at the naivety, ignorance, stupidity, and batshittery on this thread.

I'm out.

PicaK · 06/10/2024 10:06

I love my friends and I know them inside out. So I love to see photos of them having fun. I'm intrigued by all the people who think their friends are boasting or putting them down by posting their photos.
I use fb so I can download a social book at the end of year. That's why.

TofuTart · 06/10/2024 10:11

Why are you even on FB? If you don't like looking at posts?
I like seeing people enjoying themselves. Out having fun. Holidaying etc.
I don't post for you, I post for me.
Get off FB and find something that makes you happier and not so miserable.

Maddy70 · 06/10/2024 10:12

For me its my memories diary ao i look at my favebook memories every day. It makes me smile

I love having a nosy at the places people go and what they get up to holiday. May give me inspiration for future trips. Overshare away!

Me too. If it’s somewhere I really like the look of and have never been then I message the person and get a bit more info, and I’m happy for people to do the same with me when I am away!

I really love holidays and seeing others travelling and enjoying themselves, it’s better than trip advisor !

What are you on about restaurants? Are you mistaking me for someone else as I also said NOTHING 😂 about pics of food in restaurants?!

I’m not sure why this seems to have hit such a nerve with you?! Giving out bank details is naive and ignorant? I think you need to do a little research on how it all works as you’re making yourself look a bit silly and out of touch with modern rules and regs.

Missamyp · 06/10/2024 10:30

I quite like looking at people's holiday snaps can often provide inspiration or ideas for holidays.

workplaceshenanigans · 06/10/2024 10:34

DanielaDressen · 05/10/2024 21:07

I don’t do daily posts about my holiday when away at all but if I did this would be the last of my worries. Only my friends can see my posts. I’m only friends with people i actually know well, so friends and close colleagues. I’m pretty confident none of them are burglars. 🤷‍♀️

A friend of mine once took part in a tv contest and got through to the final, which was being broadcast live. During the live broadcast, both his and his parents' houses were burgled.

Quite possibly coincidence but if not then the whole nation including total strangers some of whom will be burglars is very different to a small number of trustworthy friends and close colleagues knowing you’re on holiday.

im assuming all the people who think it’s a risk don’t tell their friends or colleagues that they’re going on holiday even face to face? Because surely the risk is the same? If you think the risk is more then that says more about the people you let be your fb friends.
