Why do people post every single day about their holiday on Facebook?

PassingStranger · 04/10/2024 13:18

You know the ones who go away and give you a blow by blown account every day on what they are doing, where they are eating etc, sometimes multiple times a day.
Are friends expected to read it all and like every single post?

What happened to privacy, what happened to telling people about it when you get home?
Not against it totally, but several times a day, what's wrong with them?
They seem unable to enjoy a holiday without broadcasting every single thing. It's horrible the way FB has got to some people!!

OP posts:

@LeoOakley obvs a typo lol

I meant my husband.

MuddlingThroughLife · 05/10/2024 19:46

I post at the end of every night of a holiday. This could be 1 photo or 40 photos depending what I've been up to that day. This is so my family can see what I've been getting up to and also for me and my memories. Couldn't care less if people like them or not.

PonyPatter44 · 05/10/2024 20:00

I'm not worried about my house being burgled while I'm away, firstly because none of my friends are burglars, and secondly because even if some random burglar did happen to see my post from Lido di Jesolo, how would they know my address?

I use my FB as a bit of a diary, I like looking back at the things I've done, place I've been to, etc. As for other people's FB, I actually like my (non-burglar) friends, so I like seeing what they're up to.

LindorDoubleChoc · 05/10/2024 20:02

I do wonder the same OP, now that we have WhatsApp. If you think your relatives want to see 40 photos a day from your holiday you are probably deluded.

SabreIsMyFave · 05/10/2024 20:41

@kaos2 · Today 17:12

I won't allow my DH to post when we are away and neither do i ... to me you may as well tell everyone your front doors are open and help yourself to my stuff!
Absolute idiots as far as I'm
Concerned !

Yep this. ^

Several people have said they don't care, no-one could possibly rob them, and no-one will ever know they are away and the house is empty (even though they're bleating about it all over Facebook, and probably an (open) Instagram too! 🙄) Oh, and the insurance company not paying out just simply won't happen to them if they ARE robbed!

The ignorance and naivety from some on here is breathtaking. Even if you get robbed, (and it's just a random robbery, and not as a direct result of your blathering about your holiday on social media,) the insurance company could still refuse to pay if it comes to light that you have been on holiday - and rambled on about it on social media, (and posted dozens of photos) while you were away.

And despite you setting your pics to 'private' there are ways and means for the insurance company to find out! Insurance companies will try to unearth ANY reason to not pay out. And you blabbing on social media that your house is empty (every day for a week,) is a pretty bloody good reason for them to not pay out!

But hey you do you. Keep your head buried in the sand, and assume it won't happen to you! It does happen and it HAS happened, and it COULD happen to you.

Keep poo-pooing the warnings at your peril.

I have to say I am LOLing at the posters saying that they post all the holiday pictures while they're away for other people, so other people can enjoy the pics. LOL I've heard it all now. Most people are NOT interested in other peoples holidays pics/pics of them travelling. It's just vanity, insecurity, and bragging in most cases. At least own it!

Then they can scroll buffer seeing the 5 Facebook puts on the post 🤷‍♀️

Read my post from 10.04am today on page 4. You're deluded if you think scammers and robbers can never find out where you live if they can see your posts/any of your pics. You will be gobsmacked at how much people give away on their social media. Even you!

And don't think that just because someone is not on your Friends list, that they can't find out things about you. Also, as I said earlier, it's shocking how many people have 100s of 'Facebook friends' that they don't even know (and have never actually met!)

Link me to an example of it happening to someone with a private Facebook/Instagram account then. It would be a massive story. I’m sure lots of reputable press would have covered it. And stop with the daft descriptions - ‘blathering’, ‘blabbing’….ffs.

Huntcole · 05/10/2024 20:46

Because influencers do it...

I'm not your personal secretary.

Just Google 'will insurance pay out if you put pics on Facebook while on holiday?'

PLENTY of articles and information on there about how blathering and blabbing on about being on holiday on Facebook (when you are still there,) can - and WILL invalidate your claim.

And was it really necessary to quote my entire (long) post when I had just posted it just 3 minutes before? 🙄

Also, don't tell me what words to use, and not use. I don't get told what to do by anyone. I'm not sure who you think you are! Hmm

Nothing is wrong with them. Do you need help learning how to unfollow people? I'm sure that there are instructions on Youtube. Pretty easy. People need to curate their social media feed to be what they like to see.

I also kind of think it might be horrible that anyone resents people harmlessly enjoying themselves.

I know what you mean , I generally like the odd holiday photos but recently a friend has posted several every day , the journey at every stage , here they are going to the airport , here they are checked in now having breakfast , boarding , landing etc
It's too much so I don't respond to all of it .

Because they are worried no one knows where they are , what they are up to and want also to make everyone knows how important they and their lives are.

I facebook a lot through shared interests groups, have virtually one real life woman on there whom I met through shared interest zoom course , she actually lives in the USA and that is not like real life either.

Sometimes I post some images from my holidays but they are mainly Devon landscapes, all churches and sheep - I am sure no one will envy me.

Also, I don't mind what people post about their holidays. There was one American lady who covered the whole of Europe on solo travel. She would post every day. I enjoyed seeing her posts and actually took pity also. She was not in the best of forms in many of the images nor having the best weather, but she did the whole thing alone and God bless her and her bravery.

Well that’s a bit aggressive.
I quoted your post as per convention so people later would know who I was responding to, especially if others got in before I posted. Odd to be upset about it. I have googled. Can’t find anything which is from a reputable source about someone with a private account. Can’t find any examples of clauses in insurance which cover this. You’re the one claiming it happens. You need to evidence it.

workplaceshenanigans · 05/10/2024 21:04

Surely it is only common sense for people to realise that if they tell the whole world that they are away on holiday, their home is unattended for a week or two and an ideal target for burglars.

I don’t do daily posts about my holiday when away at all but if I did this would be the last of my worries. Only my friends can see my posts. I’m only friends with people i actually know well, so friends and close colleagues. I’m pretty confident none of them are burglars. 🤷‍♀️

If I were to tell the whole world, maybe. My social media is private. Only people who already know I’m away (because they are my friends) can see it. And actually, if I put in the press ‘<Facebook name> is away’ it wouldn’t help anyone find where I live to burgle me. Assuming there was anything worth burgling…

DanielaDressen · 05/10/2024 21:10

And I actually like seeing peoples holiday photos…..I’ve actually booked holidays because of seeing what looks like an amazing hotel/destination on my fb feed. Ultimately if it’s not something I’m interested in I can keep scrolling.

cuddlebear · 05/10/2024 21:11

To be fair, I also find this shit tediously boring.

Therefore I do not participate in any social media.

beartie · 05/10/2024 21:36

I don't post on Facebook but I post daily videos on TikTok when I'm on holiday but then again I get paid for it so I guess that's the added bonus there! But i genuinely enjoy sharing it and a lot of people who follow me are genuinely interested - I guess that could be said for Facebook users who have family on there who enjoy seeing all the pics/vids in one place Smile

Yet here you are on Mumsnet which is, I hate to break it to you, social media.

XenoBitch · 05/10/2024 21:51

I can't get worked up about it. People post on their own FB for various reasons. Sharing things is literally what it is for. No one is pinning you down and peeling your eyelids back so you are forced to look at it. Just snooze them, or scroll on by.

One of my friends is on holiday at the moment, and she is posting loads! She has had an awful time with her health recently, so it is so good to see her off enjoying herself.
And this time, every year, it will pop up in her FB memories and give her a little boost all over again too.
BTW, any burglar seeing her FB and chancing it (who? her FB is private) will have a surprise as she lives with her DH and dad, and they are still home.

Needmorelego · 04/10/2024 13:42

Because Facebook is a person's online diary/scrapbook.
They can post what they want.
You don't have to read it.

This.
I post for me, as I like to look back at what I've done and where I've been, memories popping up.
I like interacting with people too, love seeing my friends posts. Clue's in the name. SOCIAL media.
If you don't like, nobody's forcing you to look.
Never understand people who whinge about what others post and don't want to see their updates - they're your friends, surely. Unless you're one of those who just collect randomers they've never met.
