I'll go first. Steak and coco pops. The steak was in the coco pops. DD made it.

I'm still not actually short what it was but it was in hospital and I am gluten-free they obviously had no idea what to serve me so it was just congealed stuff. I literally couldn't swallow it despite being very hungry.
Another hospital meal I memorably had was pre-finding out I was gluten-free and a gave me the sausages that were dry and hard they were so old.

Andouillette.

Inedible.

IceTippedMountains · 04/10/2024 10:19

When I was a kid, a mate of my dad's came to stay and offered to do the cooking. He served up a jumbled meal of various undercooked vegetables and over cooked meat (as some sort of ugly stir fry). It was that horrendous my mum actually went down to the shop and bought me an ice cream for dinner (it was summer). Must been the only time as a child my parents let me have an ice cream for dinner Grin

This... I love my food and will try anything, but andouillette really turned my stomach

‘Vegetarian lasagne’ that looked as if it had already been through someone’s digestive system, at a university friend’s wedding. We sneaked out and had a quick Chinese and got back in time for the speeches.

Blusterydaytodaypoohbear · 04/10/2024 10:24

Anything my mil made many years ago. Her gravy was gravy salt mixed with hot water from the tap and poured immediately over veg- that had been in the pressure cooker for 4 hours...

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 04/10/2024 10:24

A meal at DH's granny's house. It was meant to be bubble and squeak but what we actually got was luke warm cabbage/potato/bacon floating in a pool of tepid oil.

I normally have a cast iron stomach so I ate it because she was lovely and I didn't want to offend her but I spent the whole night being sick.

DoIhavegreeneyes · 04/10/2024 10:29

A new Restaurant near South Ken station, it was Ethiopian or Eritrean, Underdone meat and a sort of tough chappatti. All in a room with white tiles (lavatory type).
My friend enthused and insisted we go. She only went to write it up for a Blog of a friend.

TheChosenTwo · 04/10/2024 10:29

@LunaNorth agree, it’s like eating sewage 🤢🤮

worst meal I’ve ever eaten (as the andouilette was just part of a French bbq and the rest of it was delicious!) was in Spain and we really fancied a curry one night. It was the end of our 2 week holiday and we bloody a curry and had missed one: The dc were small and in bed, we googled to find a decent curry house. Dh went to collect it and omg we were faced with what I could only describe as what I imagine a curry in the 1970’s might look like. Everything was artificially red, even the rice 😳 all the curries were sweet, had raisins and flaked almonds in them (when they shouldn’t have been there) and just bright red and revolting, the naan breads were in fact pitta breads, I remember we bagged it all up and put it in the bin, I think I was a bit emotional and hangry and dh went back out and got us something else in the end. We laugh about it now, but my god it was the worst meal I’ve ever been faced with.

Cobblersorchard · 04/10/2024 10:37

Poulet Breton in France, it wasn’t cooked and was absolutely horrid and very expensive. I like it as a dish usually but this was just awful.

Also a paella that DH made in a new pan that just tasted of said pan- it was a cheap one and the finish had come off for some reason. He had worked so hard on it and it looked lovely so I choked it down trying not to think about whether it was poisoning me 🙈😂

CurlewKate · 04/10/2024 10:40

I saw this and made a little bet with myself that someone would say "anything my mil cooked" within the first 10 posts. I wasn't wrong.....

randomchap · 04/10/2024 10:41

Not a meal but my gran baked a birthday cake and forgot to add sugar. It was rank.

Despite my mum's urging and insistence at future birthdays neither me, or my siblings are her cakes again. I feel bad about that now but at the time it made sense. How could cake taste so bad

badwolf82 · 04/10/2024 10:43

A friend’s mother made me a vegetarian “quiche” one time - it was wet, lukewarm, and filled with undercooked broccoli and cauliflower. It tasted like boiled farts.

But the meal she described did sound absolutely disgusting.

Nourishinghandcream · 04/10/2024 10:49

Squid!

Was not told what it was beforehand, just that it was "something special".
Tasted & looked awful with a texture like rubber.🤮
Was never a lover of fish (in any shape or form) but have not eaten any since and that was over 30yrs ago.

So true. Absolutely disgusting. Unfortunately we often had to cook the vile things on holiday in France as my dad loved them, but he was a man who actually liked tripe. No one else in the family would touch them.

CocoapuffPuff · 04/10/2024 10:51

A chicken and cashew nut dish from a Chinese takeaway in Peterborough. I have absolutely no idea what the "meat" was, but it wasn't bloody chicken breast or thigh. Skin, probably, and floppy and slimy and coated in a sloppy slimy batter. It was so revolting the first mouthful came straight back out again. Everyone else said theirs was okay so carried on eating.
I had to make toast instead.

SingingSands · 04/10/2024 10:54

Sea bass in a black pepper curry sauce.

So bad it's gone down in family legend and is the reason I can't eat sea bass to this day!

Humdrumdumb · 04/10/2024 10:59

A house special chicken dish in Beijing which cost 3 times the amount of some of the other dishes we liked. We don’t speak Chinese so only had a picture to go on and it looked good. What was served was the necks of chickens. I do know that’s a real treat in China but I found it inedible so ordered something else after one bite.

Meadowfinch · 04/10/2024 11:05

An ex boyfriend took me out for a birthday meal. It was a fairly low-end pub so I chose the sausages, mustard mash and veg, thinking there wasn't much they could get wrong.

Unfortunately it came with gravy that was barely diluted gravy powder you could have stood a spoon up in.

I politely scraped it off all the food I could but it was horrible, very salty. I've not been back there since. 😩

Gettingbysomehow · 04/10/2024 11:05

Jellied eels. Absolutely revolting.

ComtesseDeSpair · 04/10/2024 11:05

A Nigerian ready meal from Sainsbury’s. At full price they were pretty expensive, about £10 for a small tray, but then one day there was a whole heap of them reduced to £1.50 (in hindsight, this should have been the red flag I heeded) and I love West African food, so I bought three trays of eforiro. It was meant to contain chicken, beef, prawns, cow foot and tendon. It contained prawn shells, unidentifiable gristle, and bones which had been boiled for so long that they were almost soft. I gave up after about four mouthfuls and put the remaining trays out for the foxes who refused to touch it.

BeachRide · 04/10/2024 11:09

My elderly mother has a habit of putting leftovers in unlabelled bags in her freezer. One family meal for dessert, she presented us with a delicious boiled potato crumble, complete with cinnamon and custard 🤢

Agreed, I've tried them once. Never again.

Aposterhasnoname · 04/10/2024 11:11

Either a full roast with loads of gravy made with hot chocolate powder, or porridge made with milk, honey, bananas, blueberries and a huge sprinkling of salt.

Both ExH efforts.
