To want to return to the days of Larry Grayson’s Generation Game?

Ringlet · 03/10/2024 17:27

A few Saturdays ago on BBC4 they showed a 1981 episode of Larry Grayson’s Generation Game.

it so reminded me of my primary school years - I’d have been 8/9 when it aired - Isla St Clair was on.

it brought back so many memories for me. Loved Larry and Isla - Larry was such a good sport - he’d get up on the stage and do Morris dancing etc with the contestants.

i also loved the contestants - “here’s Sue, a 22 year old accounts clerk from Hinckley..”

Is it just me or did 22 year olds in 1981 seem older/more mature than 22 year olds today ?

i hate all stuff like

The Voice
Strickly
X Factor
BGT

SO, SHALL WE BRING THIS ERA OF TV BACK?????

Well, let’s be glad that young people are staying in education longer and not trooping into the kind of jobs a 16 year old can get and saddling themselves with children and a mortgage by 20, surely — and leading lives so joyless that winning a sandwich toaster off a conveyor belt is the acme of your existence?

They are staying in education and then getting those jobs anyway. Because having a degree isn't enough.
Yes, I have one. Two, actually. Not at all the same as being employable at a certain level.

Violinist64 · 04/10/2024 09:58

@KindOf, I have not had a joyless life and nor have most people of my generation or older. Many young people who are now students are not suited to university life and are studying for Mickey Mouse degrees that have no relevance to any sort of meaningful career. Why do you consider it to be more fun to carry on living and thinking as a teenager into your thirties than living a life where you contribute to society and behave in a mature manner? I have had a wonderful career as a professional musician and have also been married since 1989 and brought up three children. This is the acme of my life. Studies show that having a purpose in life is very important to one's well-being and for me that is my Christian faith, my husband and family and my music. I cannot help but wonder whether many problems with mental health among some younger people is because they are infantilised long beyond the time they should be so that they are somewhat aimless in life.

Anyone know the "turkey" episode of Family Fortunes with Max Bygraves? Supposedly the contestant overheard the previous answer 'chicken' and so had turkey in mind when it comes to his turn. Makes me laugh everytime I see it.

the look on the first contestant's face when the second contestant cocks it up😂😁

Sometimes still in full tune education at 22 with overbearing parents who treat you like a kid is worse than this !

Anyone remember a programme on in the children's hour with Kizzy, a young gypsy girl who had to attend a normal school? Possibly called The Didicot? I LOVED that show but can't find any re-runs. Maybe I've got the name wrong?

I remember this, it was definitely called Kizzy!

ApricotLime · 04/10/2024 14:07

I went to uni in 1989 and my mental health was a hell of a lot better once I was able to get away from my mentally ill, abusive mother. If I'd gone straight into work at 16 I'd have found it hard to get away and live independently unless I'd married I guess. I didn't meet Mr Right until I was 28 though.
I think it's sad that so many people see higher education as a waste and a negative thing in this country. A college education has been viewed positively for many years in other countries.
University used to be very much the preserve of private school kids or middle class grammar school kids when I was young. The working class girls in my grammar school became hairdressers or did low level clerical jobs with few prospects.
University being more accessible to working class kids has coincided with people suddenly looking down their nose on University education I've noticed

Getitwright · 04/10/2024 14:40

If anyone is interested, the BBC Programme Index has over 11 million programmes listed, with some details of cast, location etc…..

For those of a certain age, a 40th Anniversary Edition of The Box of Delights is coming out on DVD just in time for christmas this year. Of course it must be watched one episode per week with the final episode on christmas eve for the full nostalgic experience.

Oooh, we have the standard DVD, I wonder what extras are on the anniversary one? Mine has the Blue Peter segment interviewing the actors.

I was thinking the same as the last poster - got to be Brucie. 😍
I'm considering having a "Nostalgia" themed Christmas this year with Babychams, The 2 Ronnies, Morcambe and Wise and Brucie. We can turn the power off now and again for extra authenticity!

I would love this. Old paper decorations and Chinese lanterns.

Mum used to make a cake covered in stuff from a wartime recipe called 'mock almond paste' and it had the red glittery sash around it with santas on.

Simpler times.

It's got the Blue Peter segment, and a new making of. Probably not enough to justify getting it again if you have it already. There's also a blu ray version due.

Special Feaures
Time And Tide – Making The Box of Delights (NEW)
Trails & Continuity (NEW)
2004 Kay Harker & Director Interview
Blue Peter, Take Two & Pebble Mill Clips

OonaStubbs · 04/10/2024 17:31

Does anyone remember "That's My Dog"? It was a gameshow for dogs. My grandma and grandad used to love it.

I might have to get it anyway! It only takes the theme tune to whisk me back to when I was 10!

It's such a charming serial - a reminder of an age where it was perfectly normal for a mouse to be portrayed by a man in a mouse costume. And the excitement over the special effects, which I imagine would look pretty ropey to today's children, but were cutting edge in the mid-80s.

No thanks. The presenters of the day gave me the creeps.
Larry Grayson, Les Dawson, Bruce Forsyth etc. huge cringe as the youngsters say.

Mind you, what do we have now? People eating kangaroo testicles and dating shows where you parade around in the altogether so yeah I think I've changed my mind. Bring back Mary whitehouse and Bullseye.

Bullseye is coming back! it waa on the news this morning, will be hosted by Freddie Flintoff

Does anyone remember when footage of a criminal who appeared on the show, John Cooper, was used to match him to witness statements?

I don't think people generally view higher education as a negative thing but as a PP said so many degrees don't seem to have any useful purpose in today's world of work. Of all the people know with degrees only one actually works in The same field. So many have got themselves into debt but still do The same jobs that people of my generation did without a degree.

Examples. My last boss had a degree in chemistry but was an accountant. What a waste of all those fees and study. Friends daughter did a fine art degree but now does my old job at the local council.
