To want to return to the days of Larry Grayson’s Generation Game?

Ringlet · 03/10/2024 17:27

A few Saturdays ago on BBC4 they showed a 1981 episode of Larry Grayson’s Generation Game.

it so reminded me of my primary school years - I’d have been 8/9 when it aired - Isla St Clair was on.

it brought back so many memories for me. Loved Larry and Isla - Larry was such a good sport - he’d get up on the stage and do Morris dancing etc with the contestants.

i also loved the contestants - “here’s Sue, a 22 year old accounts clerk from Hinckley..”

Is it just me or did 22 year olds in 1981 seem older/more mature than 22 year olds today ?

i hate all stuff like

The Voice
Strickly
X Factor
BGT

SO, SHALL WE BRING THIS ERA OF TV BACK?????

i barely watch TV now with the back to back murder dramas. Living in London, murders aren’t exactly a rarity in the news, so a bit of escapism would be a nice spot of evening well-being. Do other countries have as much depressing TV as we do?

I binge watch Bullseye with Jim Bowen, love it. Jim says so many things that wouldn't fly these days. Love the prizes and the "fashions" of the day". Gotta love ir when they wheel out "here's what you could have won. I loved TGG, with Larry mainly.

ApricotLime · 03/10/2024 19:37

Despite missing the Generation Game there are programmes on I enjoy:

Gogglebox
Strictly
Bake Off
Extra Slice
Gardeners World
Young Sheldon

I'd just love to be able to watch The Generation Game again.

Paul Daniels Magic Show
Just Good Friends with Jan Francis and Paul something
Butterflies
Dukes of Hazzard
Give us a Clue with Una Stubbs and Lionel Blair

Monkeytennis97 · 03/10/2024 19:45

We watch the A team every night on Legend... now we find it hilarious in terms of the staged fighting, formulaic script but it's a nice trip down nostalgia lane. Actually watching it now 😊

notprincehamlet · 03/10/2024 19:55

what do we have now? People eating kangaroo testicles and dating shows where you parade around in the altogether
Today's TV makes me nostalgic for the test card.

Roaminginthegloaming · 03/10/2024 20:01

The Dick Emery Show. I loved his blonde character Mandy with her knee length white boots….hitting someone with a handbag saying ‘Oooh, you are awful- but I like you’ :)

The Liver Birds

The Likely Lads

My wife Next Door (John Alderton and Pauline Collins - afaik married in real life?)

Robin’s Nest

The Mike Yarwood Show

The Cliff Richard Show (frequently had Olivia Newton-John as his guest) and the Younger Generation dancers.

In the Summertime ‘Seaside Special’ (outside broadcast)

It’s a Knockout

My favourite show which was a little later on a Saturday evening was ‘Tales of the Unexpected’ (usually featuring someone living in a grand manor house with a Rolls Royce parked outside on the drive!). Edited to add that there are dozens of episodes on YouTube! :)

I even remember there was a drama series called ‘Samaritans’ about the real life organization featuring suicidal people and how the Samaritans were (and continue to be) a lifeline at the end of the phone line.

Bruce was the best. I agree it would be good to see a show that isn't about being voted out.
They are all the same today.

Putput · 03/10/2024 20:09

Would love to see Brucey back and his women, look at them girls they're so appealing, go on dollies do your dealing.

And Bullseye with Jim Bowen. Both now long gone of course.

But yes people were humble back then and had proper jobs! There are some beauties on Bullseye. Work in a spring factory Jim. Oh that must have its ups and downs.

menopausalmare · 03/10/2024 20:09

At Christmas I always watch The Good Life Christmas special on Daily Motion. I'm 9 again ☺️

SocksAndTheCity · 03/10/2024 20:09

Tales Of The Unexpected is on Prime @Roaminginthegloaming I have been watching it all. 😀

I agree with a PP - I left school at 16 in 1988 and went straight to work; where I grew up university was only for the posh/rich (who could afford not to get a job) and the exceptionally clever/academic kids who were going to be doctors and solicitors and so on. The mature looking 22 year old had likely been in a work environment interacting with adults for the last six years.

OonaStubbs · 03/10/2024 20:12

TV was much better in those days. There is really nothing worth watching on TV nowadays IMO.

Drivingoverlemons · 03/10/2024 20:12

I used to love Bruce’s generation game “good game, good game!”

And The Price is Right, I was obsessed with. I still have a contestant badge I made myself.

I liked Bob’s full house - I remember that my Gran loathed Bob Monkhouse though and used to say “Int ‘e awful”.

notprincehamlet · 03/10/2024 20:12

I loved Ever Decreasing Circles
It's a great show but watching it now ... it's so dark! Martin is so deeply screwed up!

Higher than an ace, higher than an ace!

You can be a penny under but not a penny over!

I was thinking the same as the last poster - got to be Brucie. 😍
I'm considering having a "Nostalgia" themed Christmas this year with Babychams, The 2 Ronnies, Morcambe and Wise and Brucie. We can turn the power off now and again for extra authenticity!

Six years ago, hubby and I got out his late parents Christmas decorations (60s and 70s) and put them up for a very retro Christmas. Tinsel that had seen better days, but the hanging decorations were all fabulous, reminding us of Christmases past.We even had the obligatory "saucy" balloon arrangement of two round and one long pinned around the sitting room....😏😆 Great Christmas was had, everyone appreciates a bit of nostalgia. Might have to do it again this year now I've been reminded 🎄🤩🥳🤩

You need sky or similar to get anything decent.

AnnaMagnani · 03/10/2024 20:23

@Monkeytennis97 Our favourite bit of The A-Team on Legend is the trigger warning they give before each show - 'this show reflects attitudes from the past which may be offensive today'

DH thinks it's because Face starts perving on any woman in sight.
I think it's because they have a 2 second clip of Murdock in a dress in the opening credits.

We are glued to the screen desperate to find something to be offended about either way.

I remember a game show called 321. I loved things like the Generation Game and Family Fortunes.

However I suspect some of this is more me being a child with no responsibilities. As a student I did like the children’s programmes. I don’t have children but have enjoyed watching some stuff recommended here on iplayer.

Yes we sat through one after seeing that and neither DH or I had a clue about what was supposed to be offensive.

What we are served up under the guise of entertainment is either puerile or disturbing.
