To want to return to the days of Larry Grayson’s Generation Game?

Ringlet · 03/10/2024 17:27

A few Saturdays ago on BBC4 they showed a 1981 episode of Larry Grayson’s Generation Game.

it so reminded me of my primary school years - I’d have been 8/9 when it aired - Isla St Clair was on.

it brought back so many memories for me. Loved Larry and Isla - Larry was such a good sport - he’d get up on the stage and do Morris dancing etc with the contestants.

i also loved the contestants - “here’s Sue, a 22 year old accounts clerk from Hinckley..”

Is it just me or did 22 year olds in 1981 seem older/more mature than 22 year olds today ?

i hate all stuff like

The Voice
Strickly
X Factor
BGT

SO, SHALL WE BRING THIS ERA OF TV BACK?????

Judy Dench is a amazing woman, as pp said As time goes by is also a very good show , like many of the previously mentioned the gental comedies were much better imo than the brash in your face type of shows that we seem to get now .

Ooh and Red Dwarf

the American shows of the same era , yes I loved the A-team , knightrider , Airwolf , Chips ,

ScottBakula · 03/10/2024 20:53

And one that would never be allowed now , Are You Been Served . But I loved it

Happy days! 😄

😀 Heyyyyy 👍👍 says the Fonz

When gay men were acceptable only if sending themselves up, mincing across the screen, firmly in the closet. Nah, let’s not.

Squiillionaire · 03/10/2024 21:06

Agree with everything above. But what about Sale of he Century. With the supercilious Nicolas Parsons. From Norwich (centre of the world) the quiz of the week. The sale of the century 😂

MissyB1 · 03/10/2024 21:13

And remember Butterflies with Wendy Craig? It was filmed in the town I live in, she would meet her lover in the park where I walk my dog.

Also loved Citizen Smith, Terry and June, and the amazing Rise and fall of Reginald Perrin.

EsmeSusanOgg · 03/10/2024 21:15

I think a modern generation game would do well. Great family entertainment.

I binge watch Bullseye with Jim Bowen, love it. Jim says so many things that wouldn't fly these days. Love the prizes and the "fashions" of the day". Gotta love ir when they wheel out "here's what you could have won. I loved TGG, with Larry mainly.

Yes…usually a boat!!!

My siblings and I still call moving cars around Doing a Butterflies 😂

@LadyCakehole I love that idea of a Nostalgia Christmas. I'll have an advocaat and lemonade snowball with a maraschino cherry!

Oh Snowballs!!!😂 Yes an absolute must! 👍

I was thinking the same as the last poster - got to be Brucie. 😍
I'm considering having a "Nostalgia" themed Christmas this year with Babychams, The 2 Ronnies, Morcambe and Wise and Brucie. We can turn the power off now and again for extra authenticity!

Can I come round to yours please????

LadyCakehole · 03/10/2024 22:39

FrangipaniBlue - definitely! But you need to bring one of those enormous tins of beer that had to be punctured at the top before you could get anything out of its spout thingy ! 😂

Sladuf · 03/10/2024 22:43

YANBU at all. I only got to see Larry’s Generation Game when it was repeated on one of the Sky channels a few years ago but I ended up watching quite a few episodes of it. He was hilarious. I’d watch those any day over most of the crud on TV now.
Bruce’s second stint hosting The Generation Game in the 90s was my era. Loved that too.

HotCrossBunplease · 03/10/2024 22:48

Someone mentioned The Price is Right! With Leslie Crowther. My friends and I at primary school used to run madly up and down the steps in our school playground pretending to be the hugely excited people that Leslie called on to “Come on down!”

Getitwright · 03/10/2024 22:53

Rising Damp is currently on one of the digital channels, very funny.

This is very old……anyone recall Double Your Money, (Hughie Green) Open That Box. 1960’s I think.

Hughie Green turned out to be the father of Paula Yates🤭

DogInATent · 03/10/2024 22:59

It’s a Knockout
There's another dodgy one, and that's before you count Andy on the royal special...

Getitwright · 03/10/2024 23:00

It wasn’t open the box, it was Take Your Pick!

I remember a game show called 321. I loved things like the Generation Game and Family Fortunes.

However I suspect some of this is more me being a child with no responsibilities. As a student I did like the children’s programmes. I don’t have children but have enjoyed watching some stuff recommended here on iplayer.

I was coming to say 3-2-1.. with Ted Rogers and Dusty Bin!

I watch Are You Being Served most nights before bed!

YANBU at all OP, there aren't many decent programmes on now. Is it the fear of offending and being cancelled? Racism, sexism and ageism should never be excused of course but I think people have forgotten how to laugh at themselves.

The 22 year old accounts assistant would have started full time work at around 16 (as I did) so would be expected to be more mature in attitude, yes. And it was not unusual to be married with children at that age too.

I loved the Generation game and the innuendos went over children's heads so it was great family viewing.

Yes, at the time that episode aired I was 23 and already had a husband, a mortgage and a child. I'd been married 3 years by then.

Omg! Blast from the past!
Oh I could crush a grape
Here's what you could have won
Say what you see
321 and the way yer man did the twisting fingers!
Loved its a knockout! My grandad used to ring me every week just before it started to remind me to watch it. #memories
Tv is just not the same any more.

Thursdaygirl · 03/10/2024 23:29

Fondly remembering Seaside Special and Noel Edmonds’ Late Late Breakfast Show. It was a great area for Saturday night TV!

abracadabra1980 · 04/10/2024 03:40

Anyone remember a programme on in the children's hour with Kizzy, a young gypsy girl who had to attend a normal school? Possibly called The Didicot? I LOVED that show but can't find any re-runs. Maybe I've got the name wrong?
