To want to return to the days of Larry Grayson’s Generation Game?

Ringlet · 03/10/2024 17:27

A few Saturdays ago on BBC4 they showed a 1981 episode of Larry Grayson’s Generation Game.

it so reminded me of my primary school years - I’d have been 8/9 when it aired - Isla St Clair was on.

it brought back so many memories for me. Loved Larry and Isla - Larry was such a good sport - he’d get up on the stage and do Morris dancing etc with the contestants.

i also loved the contestants - “here’s Sue, a 22 year old accounts clerk from Hinckley..”

Is it just me or did 22 year olds in 1981 seem older/more mature than 22 year olds today ?

i hate all stuff like

The Voice
Strickly
X Factor
BGT

SO, SHALL WE BRING THIS ERA OF TV BACK?????

TV channel called Challenge on freeview is a rerun of old programmes from way back. Not quite as far back as Larry Grayson but plenty of Bullseye, Strike It Lucky, Catchprase etc.

Oh yes I’ve seen that - loved the old eps of Crackerjack

I dislike all of the reality TV shows now , when the 1st few started years ago it was a novelty but now they all seem the same . I also dont like a lot of the comedys that have come out over the past 10 years .
Give me
Porridge,
Open all hrs ,
Only fools and horses,
Some of The two Ronnie's sketches
The good life ,
To the Manor born ,
Bread
Brush strokes

It was Bruce Forsyth for me first…I loved it! He was so funny, so was Larry Grayson. Remember they had to remember what was on the conveyer belt? The obligatory fondue set, cuddly toy…the audience ‘oohing’ over all the prizes!

Ah yes and Silver Leaf Tray ❤️

I met Larry Grayson several times as a child, an absolute gentleman and incredibly kind.

I've also met Isla St Clair - a very lovely lady.

Morcambe and Wise at Christmas is traditional in our house, it reminds me of my childhood.

Getitwright · 03/10/2024 18:42

They are all around on UK TV channels, Yesterday, Talking Pictures. All free as well.

We don’t watch much on BBC, ITV. MOTD, Uni Challenge, Only Connect. That’s it. I said to my OH if it wasn’t for MOTD, we have no need to get a license.

Sayoonara · 03/10/2024 18:43

Brucie for me. He really was an entertainer.

MouseofCommons · 03/10/2024 18:46

The conveyor belt game might do my memory good.

"CUDDLY TOY!" Ooooooo!

ScottBakula · 03/10/2024 18:48

Ah I forgot Terry and June
I don't recall A fine romance , who was in it ?
I also forgot Keeping up appearances.

DH who has spent the last 15 years forcing me to watch documentaries and art house cinema and moaning when I turned on Strictly has recently discovered re-runs of the A-Team on Legend.

OMG it is shit. Mr T is the only redeeming feature but 2 minutes of Mr T does not outweigh 55 minutes of unattractive blokes mucking about.

I keep asking DH if he could go back to being unremittingly highbrow and he just grins inanely at me.

Sethera · 03/10/2024 18:57

I remember The Generation Game being Bruce, then Larry, then back to Bruce. Larry's catchphrase was 'Shut that door!'. I knew someone who was on it with her dad in the second Bruce era - apparently surprisingly little editing took place, it was more or less filmed as it ran.

Christmas 1981 schedules..
https://ukchristmastv.weebly.com/bbc-1981.html

Alongside Larry Grayson, how about Jimmy Saville and Rolf Harris? If you're really lucky you might have caught Gary Glitter on TOTP...

The problem with nostalgia is that we only want the good bits.

Edited

Nostalgia is only the good bits

Michael Williams?

I loved As Times Goes By, I think that was what it was called. Also with Judy Dench. That was repeated in its entirety a few years ago and it was great to watch.

Uricon2 · 03/10/2024 19:11

Citizen Smith. Robert Lindsay long before the Dad in My Family and the great Peter Vaughan as his disapproving FIL.

ObelixtheGaul · 03/10/2024 19:13

I loved Ever Decreasing Circles. 'Howard and Hilda' is still the family joke if couples wear the same jumpers...

I used to love Sat night telly in the 8os!

Game For a Laugh, Blind date, Beadle's About, Knightrider, The A team...

I'm currently having to sit through reruns of reruns of Knightrider and The A-Team because they're on one of the SKY channels that DP's found in between football. Mainly because I'm too knackered to get up and there are two cats plonked on me. Although he has just put a hot cuppa down beside me, so it's not all bad. Fortunately, he wasn't a McGyver fan or we'd have those on as well.

By the time they get to the end of these, it'll be something like Airwolf and Streethawk.

greenday16B · 03/10/2024 19:19

I remember the excitement, that little bubble of excitement. The day of the week and what was on TV. Watching a clock and not wanting it to end. I had no idea about gay or gender, they were just people with funny voices who said silly things.

PullTheBricksDown · 03/10/2024 19:22

The presenters of the day gave me the creeps.Larry Grayson, Les Dawson, Bruce Forsyth

I stand to be corrected if I'm wrong but none of the above to my knowledge have ever come under Operation Yewtree type suspicion. I imagine they went along with sexism as most people did then, but that's not the same as being creepy in the true abusive sense.
