Second hand bed smells

CocoMaroon · 03/10/2024 17:09

Just bought a second hand bed off Facebook marketplace and paid £10 to have it delivered. Didn’t pay much as desperately needed a bed as my little boy broke the base of the original bed. It’s not my little boys bed, it’s a double bed for mine and DHs room.

This new bed stinks! 🤢I’m gutted!!

When the seller (man) brought it into the house my heart sank as I could see it was in bad condition, looked very old and worn (it’s just the bed base) I gave it the benefit of the doubt as the old bed is destroyed.

Basically this bed reeks! An old musty damp horrible smell that’s now going through the whole house. I only paid £25 for it but still. Would you just dump the whole thing outside and get a new bed or deal it it?! It’s like someone died in it 💀🙈

Sorry yes i would get rid.

CocoMaroon · 03/10/2024 17:13

Do you think I should bother contacting the seller for a refund? Or just get rid?

Just get rid.

Hankunamatata · 03/10/2024 17:30

If your skint I'd contact and tell them you want money back and to take the bed

arthar · 03/10/2024 17:30

Dump it outside?

No, you will now have to take it to the skip or have it collected. You can't just dump it outside.

You shouldn't dump things outside! You need to dispose of it properly.

smallsilvercloud · 03/10/2024 17:35

It will cost more than you paid to dispose it, unless you advertise it for free collection.

overindulged · 03/10/2024 17:36

You shouldn't have accepted it once you saw how crap it was. He's unlikely to give you a refund now, he will probably just block you.

I don’t mean just dump it obviously, I mean put it in our garden until the council can collect it

You will have to get rid, that smell will never go no matter what, I promise!
When I was living with my ex his grandfather died and we were offered his bed. I said thanks but no thanks our bed is fine. Came home one day to find him and his parents had taken my old bed away and replaced it with his dead grandfathers one because they bought it for him an had paid a fortune and it was "better quality."

I was absolutely fucking raging, it STUNK of cigarettes and musty old man. I think he smoked in bed for years before he died, the smell was insane you could smell it as soon as you opened the front door. We had a young baby still in a Moses basket next to the bed at the time and I was so upset and the thought of him breathing it in all night.

We were two floors up in a flat, I had no money to replace it and it was too heavy for me to move and nowhere to put it. I remember crying dragging the old mattress back in, into my son's tiny box room and I slept in there on the floor for about 6 months keeping my bedroom door shut tight to stop the smell. I sprayed it daily, left windows open, baking soda you name it. That smell never went. My MILs face when she seen my mattress on the floor, disgusted that I had chosen to sleep there instead of the manky bed she had dumped on me without my consent.

One of the reason I hate my interfering ex PILs and pushover ex.

Don't keep that bed, you will regret it when the smell soaks into all the other furniture. Get rid, a mattress on the floor is better than a stinking base. Suprisingly comfortable actually!

Omg that’s awful! I would have slept on a mattress on the floor too!

Thanks for your replies - not short of money so probably won’t bother pursuing a refund. Just gutted and having to wait for DH to come home to help move it. And the other day a bed a bought from Amazon for my little boy immediately broke as soon as he sat on it. I’ve had enough and I’m buying hammocks for all!! 🤣

BabyR · 03/10/2024 17:47

I couldn’t have a second hand bed in my house. Get rid.

You can probably pick up a cheap metal frame from a store online for less than £50.

Hankunamatata · 03/10/2024 17:30

I doubt they would get a reply nevermind come back for it. They’ll be glad they got rid of it.

SummerFeverVenice · 03/10/2024 17:50

I’d immediately get it outside.

Weird smells on old furniture, especially beds, can be the smell of bedbugs infesting it.

The seller may have picked it up from being fly tipped….

SummerFeverVenice · 03/10/2024 17:52

@GlitteryFarts
That must have been so horrendous.

Kindastinky · 03/10/2024 17:57

If you arent short of money why would you buy a 2nd hand bed base?

Just chop it up and burn it. I wouldnt be paying to have it removed.

YourLastNerve · 03/10/2024 17:57

Beds are one of those things like shoes that i just don't think I'd ever buy second hand unless financially i really had no choice.

It is one way homeless try and get funds honestly. Grab fly tipped stuff and try and sell it. Easier than begging and some towns have criminalised begging. Most homeless can use the library or have a PAYG phone to access FB.

It’s more honest than stealing/crime. People are desperate.

Normallynumb · 03/10/2024 18:19

Definitely get rid of it.. and I say that as someone who bought furniture from FB marketplace recently( not a bed frame!
Unfortunately it will probably cost you to have it collected too( it does in my area)
As finances aren't a problem the quickest way to replace is to order from Amazon.
My new neighbour bought a brand called " Zinus which is decent.
