To report this car?

I live in an awkward shaped street. One of my neighbours is very selfish with her driving/parking. She flies round the corners when coming and going and just abandons her car across the pavement. There would be enough parking for everyone if she parked properly but she often takes up a couple of spaces due to the silly ways she leaves her car.

Anyway, this car has now been without a valid MOT for a week. She drives around with her young son in it all of the time.

AIBU to report her car for having no MOT with the hope that she'll get a fine and maybe decide to shape up a little bit?
I don't want to cause issues for myself as I live alone and she's quite the nuisance as it is so I don't want to give the police my details but also don't think crime stoppers would be much use.

Definitely report her , it is not about being a ‘grass’ . I don’t get why it’s strange to check online , it takes a few seconds on your phone .

Report her to police, social services and Dvla x

Social Services? Because her MOT has run out? Please tell me you’re taking the piss.

Isobel201 · 03/10/2024 11:39

yeah report her to the DVSA, you can do it anonymously. I reported someone who had abandoned an old ice cream van near where I used to park and live. Its not just the MOT, it invalidates her insurance.

Its really none of your business and you do t care about her son, that’s your excuse for making yourself feel better about reporting her.

Just go and speak to her.

Can’t stand a grass.

Why would you object to people reporting crimes - unless you're committing them yourself?

LostTheMarble · 03/10/2024 11:55

I’m on a FB page that shames bad parking and the response is so similar to this thread. Most people think being a twat with your car isn’t ok. Yet others are so affronted that others notice shit parking/driving/car maintenance like it’s apparently not the business of other road users or pedestrians that these types of people are a possible danger or at least inconsiderate wankers who need to be called out. A car is not something to fuck around with, use it and look after it properly or don’t have one.

Social services is way too far, I’d give her a bit more time then report to 101. My car passed its last mot with flying colours but since then had a tyre issue and now one with the light switch. This is why they need to be MOT’d and serviced intermittently!

Report her. Can't believe the replies. Her insurance is invalid.

That is factually incorrect. Anybody insurance is still valid for third party

Selfish pricks who think laws don't apply to them and endanger other road users by driving unroadworthy cars are infinitely worse tbh.

MN has gone full Phil Mitchell today, I see.

MotherOfVizslas · 03/10/2024 12:21

I would report her; she's driving illegally!

However, I don't think this will make her re-think her driving or parking! She will not connect the two things at all.

Why do you make shit up?

rainfallpurevividcat · 03/10/2024 12:37

I would report it straight away.

Sethera · 03/10/2024 12:46

Sorry if I am missing something, but if it is possible to check online that a car's MOT has expired, isn't reporting it redundant - as the info is already available online?

No it isn't redundant, reporting it is still useful.

@Meerkat9 I'm not making it up.

JubileeJuice · 03/10/2024 13:00

I reported a car on my street a few weeks ago. They don't live here but frequently visit, look dodgy and drive like a maniac, and there are lots of children who play out.

The car had no tax or Mot and hadn't done for some time, so I reported it online.

Last week, the police came and seized it! It was all very dramatic with the car owner denying driving it and refusing to surrender the keys, so a huge recovery lorry turned up and off they went with it.

Totally worth it.

MargaretThursday · 03/10/2024 13:00

It can take a week if you renew it at a post office for it to update on line.
And a week out of date she'll likely to just get a reminder to do it straight away.
Not the revenge you want.

Don't throw terms like "grass" around - it's a ridiculous concept. Telling the truth isn't "grassing" and making people feel they are wrong to tell the truth is abhorrent.

I watched the docu about the murder of Olivia Pratt Korbel recently and so many people knew who had done it but were silenced by the term "grass" Only one incredibly brave woman spoke up and named the killer.

Think about what you write next time, you have no idea how your glib, throwaway insult can affect someone or their actions.

A car can be parked on private property without an MOT so just because there is an online record when cars don’t have one it doesn’t mean they are doing anything illegal. I doubt they would do much about a car parked on the road with no MOT if it wasn’t being driven. But as this neighbour is driving it then yeah it could be reported.

I'm confused. If you can look up that the MOT has expired online then the government already have that information. Why would you need to report them, and what difference would it make?

That just means they know the car hasn't had the MOT renewed - it could be anywhere, including somewhere off public roads where it doens't need an MOT. OP would be letting them know where it is and that it is being used

Oh, of course. They don't have a number plate recognition camera on every road.

Yet.

AppropriateAdult · 03/10/2024 15:40

Gosh, an MOT that's a week out of date?! Car could burst into flames at any moment. Better do as a PP suggested and call Social Services as well as the police, OP... Hmm

Honestly. I can't believe anyone would be petty enough to report this. Especially as it will have zero effect on where she chooses to park. You might be better off addressing that directly with her.
