To report this car?

I live in an awkward shaped street. One of my neighbours is very selfish with her driving/parking. She flies round the corners when coming and going and just abandons her car across the pavement. There would be enough parking for everyone if she parked properly but she often takes up a couple of spaces due to the silly ways she leaves her car.

Anyway, this car has now been without a valid MOT for a week. She drives around with her young son in it all of the time.

AIBU to report her car for having no MOT with the hope that she'll get a fine and maybe decide to shape up a little bit?
I don't want to cause issues for myself as I live alone and she's quite the nuisance as it is so I don't want to give the police my details but also don't think crime stoppers would be much use.

People on here do realise just because your car passed a mot yesterday doesn't mean your car is safe today. What about new cars they don't have mots for the first 3 years but doesn't mean they don't break or things don't wear.

This

tyres being a massive one. They are the only point of contact with the road, yet plenty of people ignore them, even with the threat of 3 points a wheel

Amiburningout · 03/10/2024 10:08

I don’t have any answers for you OP. But I haven’t heard the term “grass” since I was about 12!

True but at least it has been checked within the past year. New cars should be OK for most things covered by the MOT, and because services are usually carried out on new cars to preserve the resale value (and often included in the sales package) they mostly do get checked over yearly.

Hoppinggreen · 03/10/2024 10:10

Report it, with no MOT she may not be insured either, which is a problem if she hits anyone

So...

Somebody behaves like an idiot with a car.

Guess what when its realised the car has no MOT they get reported because people they have upset now have an easy target.

The moral is that if you are going to be a twat dont give your enemies an easy target

Absolutely this. She is anti social with her parking. Funnily enough, the community don't like her. Report away!

Igetitalot · 03/10/2024 10:15

Our road has 3! One clearly as well
has a fake valid mot (it has no wheels and is green inside !) and I’ve reported them about 636 times and nothing happens

I once reported a bus driver for flying round the corner near mine while on his phone.

I also have been reported for not having an MOT on a broken down campervan which was parked outside a house which unbeknownst to me had a dying man living (dying) inside the front room and didn't want his last view to be of my van.

What I'm trying to say is... do what you want.

Sorry....what?!

OP - report them but I'm far more interested in what ever the hell was going on with @YouMustBeMrsWhippy!

Matildahoney · 03/10/2024 10:23

I wonder if the same people saying it's none of your business would be happy if they were in an accident with them!

Tyres are checked for physically soundness, pressure and tread thickness at the MOT. But you should check them yourselves for pressure, tread and damage routinely between MOTs.

StormingNorman · 02/10/2024 21:41

How do you know she doesn’t have an MOT? I thought you could only find out if you checked online.

...isn't it obvious then that the OP checked online?

OldTinHat · 03/10/2024 10:36

I had (and have again) reported a car parked in a disabled bay, marked with white lines, so a courtesy space, outside my house. I had to register my blue badge and car reg to the local council for that bay.

No MOT, tax. The current car has the front missing off it. No bodywork, bumper, bonnet, number plate. And yes, anyone can check the tax and MOT status of a car.

All these PPs who are saying about being a snitch, a curtain twitcher, nothing better to do can just fuck off imo. I don't even know who owns the cars that have been dumped outside my house so a 'friendly word' isn't going to help.

There's a website called Fix My Street, OP, where you can report things to your local council. I did this with car #1 and it had a ticket on within 24hrs. It was soon shifted. I didn't report that for about 3wks though. Current car has been there for 10days.

Sending you support!

wonkeydonkey123 · 03/10/2024 10:39

just start parking where she parks and how she parks, get the neighbours to do the same and when she complains tell her

Apollo365 · 03/10/2024 10:40

Report, wtf is wrong with people. Why should they get away with driving illegally. Stuff like this makes me angry.

Apollo365 · 03/10/2024 10:41

There is a SORN car parked half in a disabled bay outside my house right now

no MOT means no insurance

Get a life will ya.

You're not doing this out of concern.

No MOT invalidates your insurance....

BurbageBrook · 03/10/2024 10:45

Yep, do it.

LadyLolaRuben · 03/10/2024 10:47

The bottom line is she's an inconsiderate pain in the ass. Reporting her may help curtail her attitude so I'd just do it OP. It's her own fault as you can't reason with her direct so let the authorities do it. Don't give it a second thought

I cannot tell you how many under three year old cars I’ve seen that need new tyres.
so many people ignore them.

If you check a reg number on the mot checker you can see the advisories. It’s more unusual for the first mot to be clear of them than usual. Obviously not every single one, but so many have things flagged like tyres, brakes, play in bushes. It’s a great way of checking if you should buy a 2nd hand car or not, come up repeated on the second one and the cars probably been poorly maintained

Not necessarily. Only if your insurance policy states that it must have a valid MOT, none of mine state that, only that it must be roadworthy. Just because a car has no MOT doesn’t mean it’s roadworthy and vice versa. Most of the time when someone crashes a car without an MOT the insurance will pay out as usual but using a reduced value for the car commensurate with its MOT status.

They must do an awful lot of miles. Did you check the tread depth across the tyre? It's not something you can easily tell just from passing, unless the tyres are bald. The limit is 1.6 mm minimum depth across threequarters of the tread, best to replace before you reach that though. Advisory usually means it will be OK until the next MOT and possibly still OK then, just something to keep an eye on.

Shade17 · 03/10/2024 11:20

They must do an awful lot of miles.

Are you joking? Most cars doing average annual mileage will need tyres and possibly brakes before they’re 3 years old. I consider myself to be doing well if I get 10k miles out of a pair of tyres on a driven axle.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 03/10/2024 11:22

I’d report but based on experience would
expect nothing to happen

Yes I have checked online and it has already expired.

This is such a strange thing to do.
