Out of nowhere my CEO made a joke about a doctor talking to a woman who'd just given birth, punchline was doctor saying "it's a&e down there". Sexist? Inappropriate? funny? Bit weird?

OP has literally said the joke in her post.

Yeah it's not great OP.

Createausername1970 · 02/10/2024 20:45

I am struggling to understand the punchline.

On the face of it I wouldn't really be bothered, but without knowing the actual joke and the context it was told, and the topic of conversation that lead up to it, it's really hard to judge.

Allwelcone · 02/10/2024 20:45

@eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee so unfunny I can't remember. Slightly sore point (pardon the pun) as I've had 4 kids and joke made in middle of formal meeting. Yuk.

How are people not getting the joke. Basically it was a comment about the impact of childbirth on our vaginas! Hugely inappropriate OP.

Topjoe19 · 02/10/2024 20:47

Disgusting.

Allwelcone · 02/10/2024 20:48

The joke was something to do with floors as in maternity floor and the one below being a&e obv pun on vaginal birth injuries.

I'm not getting the joke because it's not funny.

CEO joke - man has terrible piles....doctor says it's A&E down there.
It's still not funny or appropriate whoever it's about.

This.
Appallingly inappropriate.

Allwelcone · 02/10/2024 20:49

I SO wish I'd done the slow blink and said "sorry I don't get it, can you explain?"

OP posts:
AllTipAndNoIceberg · 02/10/2024 20:50

Er, we aren’t getting the joke because we have only been told part of the joke.

I mean, based on the punchline alone I would wager a modest sum on it being sexist and unfunny, but we don’t actually know

ETA: cross posted with OP’s update

Allwelcone · 02/10/2024 20:51

Yeah I can't remember it fully as I was concentrating so hard on rhe input on the meeting he'd called.

FumingTRex · 02/10/2024 20:52

Yes i would say that joke was designed to make women feel uncomfortable so it was totally inappropriate and probably in bullying/harassment territory.

drizzleup · 02/10/2024 20:52

‘The maternity ward is right above A&E’, something like that?

Shelby2010 · 02/10/2024 20:53

I’m not usually that bothered about jokes being sexist, but it’s just not funny.

AmyDudley · 02/10/2024 20:53

I presume it is a joke about the fact that some women suffer horrible injuries during childbirth.

But it's OK to laugh at because you know, it's women and their women bits, so it's funny right ?

Allwelcone · 02/10/2024 20:54

He does give bullying vibes actually. I need to watch it.

OP posts:
Pingpongglitch · 02/10/2024 20:56

Sounds like someone thinks he is funny but really isn't.

At least he's not under the impression that ladies give a little cough, wince slightly and a baby appears. So he is aware there's potential suffering and pain involved. Saying that, it's not really a desirable topic for jokes in the workplace.

I'd just roll my eyes and think "idiot".

Turnitoffnonagain · 02/10/2024 20:56

What was your colleagues reaction? I mean, did anyone say anything or was there an awkward silence?

PoshMonkey · 02/10/2024 20:56

Christ, so many twatty male directors out there. These are the idiots running the show.

I wouldn't react. If anyone says anything then pretend you didn't hear.

What's your relationship to him, Op? Always watch your back....

Not necessarily. Could it be below maternity (uterus) is the bum, where there are accidents and emergencies?

Allwelcone · 02/10/2024 21:04

@PoshMonkey he looks at me like he hates me sometimes, I've asked for a payrise (probably wont get it but hey). I am popular and get the job done.

I really wish I'd asked hahahaha

I'm entirely confused. Without knowing the whole joke, I don't think we can express much of an option. After all, we joke about men's equipment at times.
