... while the other teacher in Year 6 IS... so the kids in his class are all off for the day.

DD2 is livid.

DP works from home so no prob really for us either way. But still, bit silly imo.

what, you think her teacher should strike too even though she doesn't want to?

PuppyMonkey · 22/04/2008 11:09

Dunno really, Mrs B. Just think it's a bit of a weird situation for some kids to be in and some kids not to be...

terramum · 22/04/2008 11:12

Just means the other teacher isn't a member of the NUT...

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 22/04/2008 11:13

what they are doing round here is - if there are enough teachers NOT in the NUT to keep the school open and the kids vaguely educated, the school is open.

dp's is.

dd1's is NOT.

dd2's is.

at the two that are open, there will be teachers not there, but the others are picking up the slack from them. After all, it is an issue that affects them all.

macdoodle · 22/04/2008 11:14

Yup I believ it depends on what union/or not they belong to - my DD1 school is part closed - think half in and half not - my DD1 is in - feel sorry for her teacher

PuppyMonkey · 22/04/2008 11:17

Yes, I realise that. But is this what all schools will be doing around the country - or won't most just be shut altogether?

DD has friends who officially have to go in who have broters and sisters in classes that will not be going in, for example...

ds's school are in acording to the newsletter this week, but they have said the may not be able to cover for sickness

fortyplus · 22/04/2008 11:19

My 2 are at secondary school. The school estimates that less than a third of teachers will be on strike, but there will only be enough staff to ensure cover for the upper school (ie those preparing for national exams). So yrs 7, 8, 9 not going in - the older pupils have to.

PuppyMonkey · 22/04/2008 11:20

Ooh sorry missed some of these posts...

I can understand that some teachers will be working when others aren't, covering the slack etc. But just seems a bit mad that some KIDS will be in and others won't.

Some type of an Inset day thingy would seem to be the most sensible thing to do for the teachers not in the union.

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 22/04/2008 11:21

at dp's school, 2 of the teachers are in the NUT.

PuppyMonkey · 22/04/2008 11:22

Squonk, so are the pupils in their classes having the day off or going in?

OP posts:
SquonkTheBeerGuru · 22/04/2008 11:22

I agree it seems odd that some kids are in and some not.

At dd1's school, the yr 11 kids who are soon to sit their gcses are in. But no other children.

terramum · 22/04/2008 11:23

Here we have one primary school open & the other is closed....but I've heard that some schools are opening partially depending on how many teachers are on strike....presumably it will depend on whether senior staff are on strike as well or how many teachers are going to be on strike...

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 22/04/2008 11:23

at dp's school, all the kids are going in. The rest of the teachers will cover for the two that are off.

Well, could they not just catch up on some paperwork then Tenacious?

It seems discriminatory against the kids who have to go in to me!

They could do the paperwork at home while they're on strike...

If it were fair, and super and nobody was inconvenienced, there wouldn't be much point would there?

power to the peoplllllllle!!!!!

bozza · 22/04/2008 11:34

The letter from our school says that the other teacher's are not allowed to cover for striking teachers. Then it also that Year 4 are off in the am and Year 5 are off in the pm. So I don't get it unless it happens to be that Year 4 and 5 teachers are both in the NUT and both have their non-teaching time on a Thursday. Maybe that is the day the French teacher is in. Will ask DS (only Y2 anyway so prob will not know).

clam · 22/04/2008 11:36

I didn't think other teachers were allowed to cover for those on strike...... which is why some schools are closing completely. Elf 'n' safety.
