... while the other teacher in Year 6 IS... so the kids in his class are all off for the day.

DD2 is livid.

DP works from home so no prob really for us either way. But still, bit silly imo.

What do courts patients and battered children have to do with it?

pantiesandsussies · 22/04/2008 22:05

DS (primary) is off - all the teachers are on strike.
DD (secondary) has a three lesson day. English, PCS and then Drama. The English and Drama teacher is off, (she teaches both classes), the PCS teacher is in. The Janitor is taking them for English and then Drama. I would like her to stay off, I have a problem with her crossing a picket line, Dh wants her to stay off as he has problems with the Janitor teaching her. We have been told if they stay off we will be fined. I am unsure what to do. What do you think?

Unless your child has awful attendance and you have been warned you will not be fined.

twinsetandpearls · 22/04/2008 22:10

Higher level teaching assistants can take classes as can a teaching assistant also employed as a cover supervisor.

Read my earlier post (to twinset)

AGAINST WHICH RULES?

Don't heads have any sense of responsibility?

1dilemma · 22/04/2008 22:15

P&S sounds tricky

1dilemma "What about TAs are they in a union don't see why they can't do it"

Most TAs are in unions (we are advised to) - my union (Unison) has advised, like other unions, that we should not cover for striking teachers.

In my DSs school - some classes are in & some are off depending on whether their teachers are striking. At the secondary school where I work, only Yr 11s are in

1dilemma · 22/04/2008 22:19

Ah whizzz thanks I did wonder if it was Unison for TAs

Yes, our cover supervisors shouldn't cover absent NUT colleagues' lessons on advice of their union, Unison & it's the same for official employement agencies.

I think our head is metaphorically digging up some retired staff to come and do a day's supply, & teaching combined classes himself.

Whizzz · 22/04/2008 22:22

I think there is a couple, but Unison is the favourite where I work.
Also strictly speaking TAs shouldn't be 'teaching'. We are used (& abused) as cover at our school (grrrrrrr) but that should mean supervising not actively teaching

Many children (and parents) will be voting with their feet and not turning up at school on Thurs. No-one will be fined(I believe) although teachers who refuse to cross a picket line will not be paid (too right they should also be striking and supporting their colleagues). The whole point of industrial action is to cause maximum disruption and inconvenience - otherwise what is the point?

May2December · 22/04/2008 22:28

IMHO NUT members who have chosen not to strike should also leave the union. If you do not agree with the majority vote of your chosen union then change your union.

1dilemma · 22/04/2008 22:32

Wasn't strictly speaking the 'majority' vote though was it?

pantiesandsussies · 22/04/2008 22:32

twinset - dd is yr 8 and has had three days off since she started secondary. Probably only two weeks off since reception. Actually, they have told every parent, that they will fine us if our child doesn't come in.

1dilemma · 22/04/2008 22:33

Sorry what are sussies?

pantiesandsussies · 22/04/2008 22:35

suspenders , my name is a bet.

May2December · 22/04/2008 22:36

Dilema - no it was the majority of the ones that bothered to return their ballot sheets.

Sussies are suspenders!

May2December · 22/04/2008 22:38

Panties - I don't think your school has a leg to stand on with this. Particularly if a lot of parents refuse to send their child.

1dilemma · 22/04/2008 22:39

Ahhh (re suspenders)

1dilemma · 22/04/2008 22:41

Heated and May please excuse me nice talking to you both but I must reply to another thread then go and do some work

Heated · 22/04/2008 22:41

The majority of NUT members at my school did not vote to strike in the ballot, but the majority will be taking strike action on Thurs.
