... while the other teacher in Year 6 IS... so the kids in his class are all off for the day.

DD2 is livid.

DP works from home so no prob really for us either way. But still, bit silly imo.

My parents used to drum into me when I was little that life isn't fair and the sooner i accepted that fact the happier i would be!!!! Your dd has to accept that the world is full of injustices and having to go to school when her mates don't is just one of them.
My ds would be absolutely livid if it were him though.

Novicecamper · 22/04/2008 11:47

Why is it silly? I'm not following.
Why would you want your child to have the day off unnecessarily?

My two are off but that's just because their 2 classes are affected - only 6 classes in the school of 17 classes is affected so only those classes are off school. Seems logical to me!

Novicecamper · 22/04/2008 11:48

Ds3 is in the school nursery and he will be going in.

I don't really get what the issue is.

PuppyMonkey · 22/04/2008 11:50

Seems logical to you Novice. Not to my DD who fancies a nice skive like the others in her year...

ooh, i remember teacher strike days when i was at school. i loved them!!

auntypurple · 22/04/2008 12:16

DD1 is not happy that she has to go into school on Thursday she is 9, and dd2 who is 5 gets the day of because her teacher is on strike. I just told her it's tough luck and she is going to school, right stropy madame she was too when she found out.

ComeOVeneer · 22/04/2008 12:17

I thought non NUT teachers were not allowed to be covering for any NUt colleagues who were striking?

ComeOVeneer · 22/04/2008 12:17

MY dd is relieved that she isn't having the day off

PeachyHas4BoysAndLovesIt · 22/04/2008 12:22

3 / 10 in at ds1's school, ds1 is off, other two (at the infants) are in

is a bit confusing for them- however looking on it as bonding time for ds1, ds4 and me

PuppyMonkey · 22/04/2008 12:23

So if we kept dd off to show solidarity for the teachers , do you think it will go down as an unauthorised absence in her records?

Flamesparrow · 22/04/2008 12:23

My DD is quite frantic at the concept of a midweek day off (routine isshoos) - thankfully her whole school is shutting, she would be in a hell of a state if her friends were going and she wasn't

wannaBe · 22/04/2008 12:25

none of the teachers at ds' school are in the NUT.

But...

non NUT teachers are not allowed to cover for NUT ones, also non NUT teachers are not allowed to strike at the same time because their unions haven't voted to strike.

so those that strike do so and those that don't go to work.

it's hardly discrimination though - the only reason why some children are getting the day off is because their teachers aren't going to be there.

PrimulaVeris · 22/04/2008 12:26

DS has to go in and will win Martyr of the Month Award

DD does not, and is gleefully planning a day with her mates and making sure DS knows what a good time she's going to have

tibni · 22/04/2008 12:28

My yr4 daughter is off and my yr2 ASD son is in - same mainstream. I am just so glad that it is that way around because my ASD son wouldn't cope with taking his sister to school but not going in himself.

Divastrop · 22/04/2008 12:30

my ds2 is in school on thursday.his teacher and one other teacher are not in the NUT.howvere, the junior school my ds1 and dd1 go to is closed on thursday.i dont think ds2 will realise untill the day

NotABanana · 22/04/2008 12:31

Why are the teachers striking? Pay I assume. They were striking over this 8 years ago when I was at college.

wolveschick · 22/04/2008 12:35

Am told that only about 35% of the members of the NUT actually voted, and of that around 70% voted to strike making it about 25% of total members in favour of a strike (mathematicians amongst you please dont castigate me-above very approx figures).

Flamesparrow · 22/04/2008 12:38

If you are in a union and can't be arsed to vote, then you have to accept what those who feel strongly enough to vote decide.

TheFallenMadonna · 22/04/2008 12:40

I feel that way about all elections, but am always shouted down by the "abstaining is a valid protest" people.

Flamesparrow · 22/04/2008 12:41

Nah, they're talking crap

If you want to protest, then say what you DO want, don't just sit back and whinge when no-one did what you didn't ask for.

peanutbear · 22/04/2008 12:43

ds 1 &2 schools are both closed tomorrow and Thursday actually I have only just remembered this

and its St georges day tomorrow!!!

PuppyMonkey · 22/04/2008 14:38

Your school's closed for St George's Day too? Better not tell my dd, she will go maaaaaaad again.

What's so confusing?
You either go in or you don't, love

jingleyjen · 22/04/2008 14:49

The NUT teachers at our school have publicly backed the strike however they will be going into school as normal and all children are attending.
