Dog came to our house viewing

Our estate agent brought a potential buyer round to view our house today who turned up with their dog. I saw them on the front door ring camera carry it in to our house but when I checked the back garden camera I could see it walking on our carpet!

We have a 5 year old and a 5 month old and it walked all over where the boys play (luckily most of their things were put away for the visit) and the estate agent knows this.

The dog also was carried into their bedroom and held above our baby’s cot.

if this hadn’t annoyed me enough when asked about it the estate agent lied and said the dog was carried the whole time. When I told her we can see it on the ring she said she’d make a note that no pets would be allowed on future viewings and that’s it ok as the dog didn’t go to the toilet in our garden.

I don’t think I’m being unreasonable but just wanted to gauge opinions before I speak to the agent properly tomorrow and whether that’s normal behaviour or is as bizarre as I think it is.

That's awful. Leaving aside the lies and sheer weirdness of it, when I was viewing houses earlier this year, several of them had cats, and two had cats that were very elderly and therefore vulnerable. Imagine exposing them to a random strange dog?!

ExquisiteEmelda · 01/10/2024 21:04

Madness

Songbird54321 · 01/10/2024 21:04

I have bad eczema which is set off by animal hair so I would be livid.
I didn't even take my kids to view houses never mind a dog! How strange.
If they'd asked and you said it was ok then I wouldn't really have an opinion on it but I'm astounded by their gall just rocking up.

winz · 01/10/2024 21:04

I love dogs, have one myself but he is a dog. He is not a "fur baby" nor am I a "fur mum" I despair about what humanity in this country is coming to.

DadJoke · 01/10/2024 21:05

My dear St Bernard Shackleton goes where ever I go, restaurants, house viewings and china shops.

RandomUsernameHere · 01/10/2024 21:06

Totally unacceptable. I'd be sacking the agent immediately.

whynotwhatknot · 01/10/2024 21:06

no thats unacceptable an then they lie aswell what if you were allergic

id move agents

schloss · 01/10/2024 21:07

This is not ok @Memberberry but before taking notice of the posts on here to sack the EA etc, look at the bigger picture - if the owner or the dog for that matter (!) put an offer in tomorrow which is acceptable I would not say another word.

Maray1967 · 01/10/2024 21:07

That’s absolutely appalling. I would be so angry I’d go into the office in person if I could get time off work and make it clear how angry I am.

If I knew my house is going to sell easily, I’d make it clear that folks who walked in with their fog would not be having it. Let’s hope that someone else offers more, OP.

Crikey, the “dogs everywhere” trend is getting a bit much now!

I wouldn’t be happy about this OP, suppose your family had fur allergies , or even worse, the dog had an ‘accident?’
Wh6 are people so damn entitled nowadays?

We went for brunch on Saturday, in town, and the restaurant/lounge bar has recently gone dog-friendly. I don’t particularly mind, I have a large daft dog myself, but she stays home on guard (asleep) when we’re out.

Our meal and conversation was constantly interrupted by a black Labrador under a table who just barked and barked. To be honest, he looked fed-up, as he had no room and was in amongst a load of legs, but nobody talked to him or tried to quieten him, he was just ignored. What’s the point of taking him in there?
Poor dog, shoved under the table out of the way.

I wonder if there will be a gradual backlash against this dogs everywhere trend. It certainly made us want to avoid this place in future.

“I wonder if there will be a gradual backlash against this dogs everywhere trend.”

oh I certainly hope so.
Im thoroughly sick of them everywhere.

Maray1967 · 01/10/2024 21:09

Dog!!

And yes, if you know you can get the asking price due to school catchment area etc then sell it to someone else,

notanothernamechange24 · 01/10/2024 21:11

When I was viewing houses my dogs stayed in the car. Had to have them with me due to distance - was staying in an Airbnb whilst doing viewings 300 miles away from home. Couldn't leave them in the Airbnb so in the car they sat.

But absolutely no way would I have asked to take them in with me. Simply no need. Didn't even cross my mind to ask and several of the houses (including the one we bought) were empty at viewing.

I can fully understand why you are upset at not being asked. I think freaking out and getting carpets cleaned is a bit excessive unless someone in the house has a severe allergy.

winz · 01/10/2024 21:11

I suppose in hindsight, the estate agent most likely did not know that the viewer was going to rock up with a dog. They are trying to get a sale, yes they lied about the viewing circumstances so could still call them out on that BUT why an estate agent should need to stipulate that viewers should not bring a pets is just an issue with society nowadays IMO. I have a ferret, he stinks, do I think it is reasonable to take him to visit other people's homes? No.

Tangledteatowel · 01/10/2024 20:48

I have taken our dog to several viewings before – but we did check with the EA and made sure they checked with the owners beforehand (and we said it was no problem to leave the dog elsewhere if it was a problem). Most (about 5 or 6 properties I think) had absolutely no issue with it, and one owner asked us to leave the dog outside while we viewed the house which was fine. None asked us not to bring the dog at all (even though we said we wouldn't mind doing so). I wouldn't ever just turn up with a dog and expect to walk into someone's house though and that's really shoddy of the EA to lie to you.

May I ask why you bring your dog? I'm not being goady at all. I promise. But why bring it? Surely it would be ok to leave at home for an hour or so?

TheNuthatch · 01/10/2024 21:14

Absolutely not!
I cant understand why anyone would take their dog to a house viewing.
I have always had dogs, I adore mine, but I would never do that! I dont want other people's dogs in my home either.
I don't agree with this recent trend of dogs in shops either, unless it's a pet shop or dog friendly pub. Some people are petrified of dogs or allergic to animals.

Birdscratch · 01/10/2024 21:14

Some people are such arseholes. How hard is it not to take a dog to a house viewing???

thoonerismspread · 01/10/2024 21:15

I adore dogs and yanbu.

Screamingabdabz · 01/10/2024 21:17

We have dog fur allergies in our household and I would feel violated by this. Are people so moronic and rude that they need the bleedin’ obvious spelled out? ‘Don’t allow people to bring animals into my house’. I think people have lost all sense of what is normal civilised behaviour.

HelloMoonbeam · 01/10/2024 21:18

I am a doggie mum - I have three doggies - and I still think that is completely unacceptable and very, very bizarre!!!! What's worst is your estate agents attitude and that they lied to you.
I found it frustrating enough that our estate agent didn't keep reminding people viewing our house to take there shoes off - I think that should be a given! But then again so should it be that you don't take your dog to house viewings!! 🙈🙉🙈

laveritable · 01/10/2024 21:21

YANBU! Some people lack basic manners!

Channellingsophistication · 01/10/2024 21:21

That is really not on. I would sack the estate agent frankly.

35965a · 01/10/2024 21:21

What sort of weirdo brings their dog into a house viewing? I’d be binning the estate agents btw, for lying. The trust is gone and I wouldn’t want to deal with them.

JSMill · 01/10/2024 21:21

I'm a dog owner and I think this is terrible. Why do dogs suddenly have to come everywhere with people?
