Dog came to our house viewing

Memberberry · 01/10/2024 20:21

Our estate agent brought a potential buyer round to view our house today who turned up with their dog. I saw them on the front door ring camera carry it in to our house but when I checked the back garden camera I could see it walking on our carpet!

We have a 5 year old and a 5 month old and it walked all over where the boys play (luckily most of their things were put away for the visit) and the estate agent knows this.

The dog also was carried into their bedroom and held above our baby’s cot.

if this hadn’t annoyed me enough when asked about it the estate agent lied and said the dog was carried the whole time. When I told her we can see it on the ring she said she’d make a note that no pets would be allowed on future viewings and that’s it ok as the dog didn’t go to the toilet in our garden.

I don’t think I’m being unreasonable but just wanted to gauge opinions before I speak to the agent properly tomorrow and whether that’s normal behaviour or is as bizarre as I think it is.

Imagine thinking you are special because you are buying a 7 figure property.
Leave your dog at home.

May I ask why you bring your dog? I'm not being goady at all. I promise. But why bring it? Surely it would be ok to leave at home for an hour or so?

If we were viewing near our previous home, we would do – but we were viewing in locations that were a day trip away (and don't have a car, so were on train). If the owners had have said no then we would have organised a sitter / dog walker, and when one owner asked us to we left the dog outside (this was all pre-arranged with the EA though, not just us turning up). Most owners were there and fussed over the dog so I never got the feeling they felt like they had to say yes. After viewing, we then got to take the dog for a lovely walk!

godmum56 · 01/10/2024 21:38

Ex dog owner and dog lover here and I'd be as mad as fuck and complaining to EA's boss at the very least

I'm sure it's a wind up.
Probably posting from prison!

Not a wind up! The last place I went to see was a few weeks ago!

SurelySmartie · 01/10/2024 21:26

So… what did it think of your house?

Probably made a cheeky offer because he was chain free.

CountAdhemar · 01/10/2024 21:39

YABU to be surprised about estate agents lying to you; it's their main role.

Mum2jenny · 01/10/2024 21:40

Not that I’m currently thinking of buying a house, if I want to view one and I can’t leave my dog elsewhere, the dog will be with me viewing the house. Ok, she’s very small and will probably not put her paws on the floor, but if the seller wants me to view their property, I will there with my dog.

Don’t think am special at all, entitled maybe - but it’s pretty standard where I am based. It wouldn’t bother me if someone took their dog to my place.

EmeraldRoses · 01/10/2024 21:41

That is really fucking cheeky some people these days just don't give a toss.

Ok, I didn't realise people could actually sound that entitled in real life!
You may have money, but you don't sound like you have class or manners!

Good luck with the house hunt- leave the dog at home!

SunflowersAndSquash · 01/10/2024 21:42

What the fuck. That is unbelievably rude.

Crikey, the “dogs everywhere” trend is getting a bit much now!

I wouldn’t be happy about this OP, suppose your family had fur allergies , or even worse, the dog had an ‘accident?’
Wh6 are people so damn entitled nowadays?

We went for brunch on Saturday, in town, and the restaurant/lounge bar has recently gone dog-friendly. I don’t particularly mind, I have a large daft dog myself, but she stays home on guard (asleep) when we’re out.

Our meal and conversation was constantly interrupted by a black Labrador under a table who just barked and barked. To be honest, he looked fed-up, as he had no room and was in amongst a load of legs, but nobody talked to him or tried to quieten him, he was just ignored. What’s the point of taking him in there?
Poor dog, shoved under the table out of the way.

I wonder if there will be a gradual backlash against this dogs everywhere trend. It certainly made us want to avoid this place in future.

I hate the “dogs everywhere” trend so much! As I mentioned up thread, we have fur allergies in our house and we’re gradually becoming more and more restricted about which cafes/pubs/restaurants we can visit. We’ve had to stop going to some of our favourite places that we’ve been going to for years. I wonder if businesses realise they’re putting off as many customers as they’re attracting by allowing dogs.

Memberberry · 01/10/2024 21:35

I don’t think it was very impressed 😂

So you don't think it will make an offer then?

Yazzi · 01/10/2024 21:42

As a Muslim, we don't (usually) have dogs in a house- culturally and religiously. And your had no idea if anyone had allergies. I would be utterly furious and demand they cover carpet cleaning fees. For the lies, if nothing else.

Pebbles16 · 01/10/2024 21:43

Bonkers, unacceptable etc.
If the dog is paying for the mortgage through insta/TikTok etc may be he gets a deciding paw - second viewing and exceptional needs territory.
But just NO.

Thismummyrunstheshow · 01/10/2024 21:44

Absolutely would not be continuing with that estate agent

Allthehorsesintheworld · 01/10/2024 21:44

I’m a dog lover but I’d be bloody livid if someone took a dog into my bedrooms.
It’s so unnecessary, not as tho it’s 30C outside. Dog could be left safely in a car for the time it takes to view a house.
Only exception would be an Assistance dog.

And that’s fine, as long as you ask first. And if it’s a no, then it’s up to them if they want to lose a sale. The problem the OP has is that they didn’t ask - and she’s lucky she only to worry about extra dirt now (tbf probably no more than if a buyer had turned up with multiple young kids 🤣) - but what if someone in her household had been allergic?

bridgetreilly · 01/10/2024 21:46

YANBU. Estate agent should never have allowed it.

But I honestly wouldn’t be worried about potential germs from a short visit like that.

Gemütlich81 · 01/10/2024 21:46

Why do people think it is acceptable to take a dog everywhere!!

underused · 01/10/2024 21:35

The dog is moving house too - it's only fair he should get to look around

Not in my house he wouldn't.

OP sack the agent and send them a cleaning bill. Appalling behaviour.

I have no idea - I think it's because they're unable to leave them anywhere.

Bruisername · 01/10/2024 20:30

I have a dog who I adore and it’s important to me that he likes any house we buy

nah, only kidding, that’s really weird. One thing if they’d tied it up outside, which would still be odd, but incredibly odd to bring it in whether carried or not

your estate agent sounds awful but then so many are!
