Mine is set to come on 6am-9pm if drops below 18 degrees. Last week it came on an average of 1-2hrs a day (Midlands)
I have it set to 14 at night, so not cold enough to come on yet during the wee small hours and rarely does even in Winter.
Anyone else had theirs on or am I mad and it's way too early? I have an underactive thyroid and feel the 🥶 so 16-17 is just too cold for me if drops that low.

My heating's on... I'm normally one of those who has the windows open and don't-turn-it-on-until-November sort of thing, but not this year! Today has been wet, dark and cold all day and my radiators have been on all day too. And it looks like they're staying that way for the time being.

GinandGingerBeer · 01/10/2024 19:32

Just changed my hive settings to 19° in the day as 18° feels too cold. It's been bloody cold up north. And wet. Exterior walls have had rain clattering against them for days 😫

TwistedSisters · 01/10/2024 19:33

We're East Anglia and it's meant to be 15/16/17 this week so not quite heating weather yet. However, the past couple days have been incredibly wet for round here and its been so dank and miserable in the early mornings that I've put it on for an hour just to bring the inside temp back up to 20ish, it had dropped to about 18.

There's not a chance that I'll win the annual mumsnet competition 😂I HATE being cold and anything below 17ish is just plain miserable.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/10/2024 19:34

It was 3 degrees here last night.

So yes our heating was on at 21 and the windows weren’t open anywhere.

Ihateboris · 01/10/2024 19:43

My heating is on from 1st January until 31st December. The thermostat is set at between 25 and 30 degrees, depending on how many windows I keep open to keep the house smelling nice, as we all know air fresheners are disgusting things which should be banned 😑

Dr13Hadley · 01/10/2024 19:45

I'm in the NW and can't believe DH caved before me this year as he's usually the heating police and I'm always cold! He put ours on late last week while WFH.
I was WFH today and find sitting still at a desk definitely makes me colder. Had the heating on 20 but went for a walk at lunchtime and warmed up so put it back down to 18 which it'll stay on until about 10pm then it goes down to 14 minimum. Any colder than that at night and the kids wake up, usually between 3 and 4* They have duvets and throws if they want them but inevitably they get kicked off.

  • my mum worked nights as a nurse and swore the hour between 3 and 4 am was always the coldest no matter what time of year.
SuperGreens · 01/10/2024 19:53

Mines set at 20 degrees, not all day though just mornings and evenings. I don't do cold, and I secured a 5p/kw fix with octopus in July, so feeling quite pleased about that.

eatingprayingloving · 01/10/2024 19:55

My heating will be switched on from December but depending on how sunny it is won't kick in until it reaches my set temp. The glazing is amazing but not sure how the temp gauge is set up though as thermometer is showing 25.

Barney16 · 01/10/2024 20:03

Mine is set at 18. In proper winter we leave it on all the time but always 18. It worked brilliantly last year. Old drafty house which gets cold very quickly. 18 constantly just kept it warm enough. Can't stand the cold.

GogoGobo · 01/10/2024 20:09

we can't get our boiler serviced until the 28th October and it will go on after that.

QuotetheRaven · 01/10/2024 20:16

Have ours at 19C all year, it just does it's thing as and when necessary. Fortunate to not have to worry about bills and we're in a new build so very efficient.

Haha isn't it awful..another Mumsnet oddity.

I bet a lot of people who say they don't have their heating on unless it drops below 13 degrees are the same people earning £150k and saying they are "struggling" with paying their children's school fees and can only spend £500 a month on eating out.

If you're cold, put your heating on. It. Is. Not. A. Competition.

Ah, well @Oldermum84 you've lost your bet where I'm concerned.

Do you really not understand that some people simply cannot afford the current energy bills and just gaily add another £100 or £200 pcm on to the budget?

You're right It.Is.Not.A.Competition.It.Is.Real.Life.In.A.COLC.And.For.People.On.Basic.state.Pension.Who.Are.Not.Your.MN's.Most.Hated.Wealthy.Boomers.

If you're cold and can afford it put the heating on, enjoy it, and don't be fucking snarky about other people.

Where up North are you? I'm in Cumbria and it was 17 degrees and sunny today!

Ours has been on a few times but it’s about 20 in our house most of the time at the moment. I would be freezing at 18 🥶

Seagullproofoldbag · 01/10/2024 20:40

No idea what the temperature is here in slightly chilly Cornwall, but I'm quite happy with my heated throw.

Mines similar to you. 18 degrees between 6am and 9pm and 16 over night. Not clicked on yet

Windows not open even in the coop?

MeMyCatsAndI · 01/10/2024 20:59

It was -1 a couple of nights ago here, so yes the heating is on!
It's going to be a bad winter.

I agree @HotSource - l'm so worried about the cost of energy at the moment. It's not as simple as 'switch it on if you're cold' for many people. Lots of us are really concerned about whether we can afford to. I have spent today in loads of layers in my cold home and have to say it is very miserable.

Pureshores499 · 02/10/2024 09:37

Invest in heated throws. Mine is amazing and I find I can have the heating on so much less if I'm just lying watching tv etc. Sometimes I get too hot (which is pretty unusual for me 😆)

I couldn’t cope with my heating being on for 3 hours at a time. I had mine on for about 30min yesterday morning and had to turn it off and was just in a tshirt.

My new build is warm fast.

My 17 century new build is the exact opposite, it gets warm slowly. It takes 30 minutes from the boiler firing before any warm water reaches the radiators.

On the flip side, it stays lovely and cool in warm weather.
