Good old heating thread!

Mine is set to come on 6am-9pm if drops below 18 degrees. Last week it came on an average of 1-2hrs a day (Midlands)
I have it set to 14 at night, so not cold enough to come on yet during the wee small hours and rarely does even in Winter.
Anyone else had theirs on or am I mad and it's way too early? I have an underactive thyroid and feel the 🥶 so 16-17 is just too cold for me if drops that low.

My DH turned it on a couple of days ago, despite my ‘It’s September , don’t be ridiculous! ’ but it is a colder than usual early autumn IMO and I have had a minor illness that has meant I am not moving around much. Had it on briefly in the morning then for a bit in the evening - it’s a warm house, a terrace, neighbours in both sides in the day. Never have it on at night because DH is some kind of reverse night storage heater in human form that kicks out so much heat when sleeping that we went through last winter with a summer duvet.

Oh here we go, the start of the competitive under-heating season.

@zzplea

I'm not sure if you know this or not, but you don't have to open every thread.

thebigL · 01/10/2024 14:39

We've had ours on intermittently over the past couple of weeks but doing without where possible. We've got it on properly today -.we need it as we live in a very old house.

AyeupDuck · 01/10/2024 14:43

Also in Midlands. Mine is set to come on if it’s below 18 between 7.30 and 9pm. Overnight it is set to if it dips below 10 degrees. Windows open 24/7 except when it gets very cold and then downstairs are shut and just bedrooms and bathroom open.

Oh here we go, the start of the competitive under-heating season.

Mine wont go on until the new year, possibly not even then, nothing wrong with a few extra fleeces.

Oh here we go, the start of the competitive under-heating season.

And I'm aiming to win!

I'm sitting here with my underactive thyroid, windows all open, perfectly comfortable in shorts and a t-shirt. It's 18 degrees in here, dunno about outside (North Wales).

My heating is set to come on if the pipes are in danger of freezing. Otherwise I only put it on when I feel cold in a vest, t-shirt and jumper. So generally only if it drops below 15 degrees. Even then, if it's evening I'll just put on a blanket because I don't like a hot house at night.

At the moment, even with the windows open, I'm still usually too hot at night and have to throw off the quilt.

On Sunday I did put on my thick socks and a top with sleeves during the day. But I was still a long way from putting on the heating.

Abra1t · 01/10/2024 15:16

Ours is on for an hour each morning and three hours each evening, only if the thermostat drops below 18 degrees, though. It's been like this since SUnday.

Hate having heating on at night unless it is around freezing or below.

Why can't people state their preferences without being accused of being "competitive underheaters"

Exactly! People come on these threads every single time with the same old boring line of 'competitive under heating'. Do these people really not understand that people have different body temperatures and feel the cold differently. It baffles me.

Apparently not

It's always the same posters too, banging on as though your preference for having the heating off is some kind of weird personal attack!

Oh, here we go, the posters who can't let other people compare notes without calling them a 'brigade' or competitive something or others.

I'd call you the sarky brigade but....

Definitelynotem · 01/10/2024 16:03

No heating here for us yet in Yorkshire. We live in a fairly new build though with good insulation so I suspect that plays a role! Have been cold a couple of mornings but fine with a jumper on.

HotSource · 01/10/2024 16:07

I am a bit cold.

I would prefer to put the heating on. But I just can't afford to start yet. It adds another £100 - £120 (min) to the energy bill. Last year it was OK til the end of October. This year feels much colder.

It's actually not that cold in my house -thermostat says 17'. I think the miserable grey rain makes it feel colder.

Might get a heated throw tomorrow.

Agree new builds are warmer. That makes a difference.

Victorian semi here.
Creaky, drafty, and a big chilly basement

Pureshores499 · 01/10/2024 16:29

My heated throw is a God send. Literally one of my best ever purchases! It's 19 in my house right now and I'm cold. Probably because I'm doing bugger all apart from watching Netflix!

What is this question of "too early"? If it's cold, it makes sense to put the heating on. It can happen that it snows in April. Would you then say, oh, no, well, it's spring, so it's too late for heating, never mind that you've got winter wonderland outside and therefore doubtless pretty cold inside?

My heating comes on if the house drops below 17.5 degrees, pretty sure it hasn't kicked in yet but it must be coming! I keep checking what temperature it registers in the house and muttering to myself in disbelief - because HOW can it feel so cold and not be showing that cold on the thermostat? My toes are so chilly right now and my hands have been cold all day. Might need to invest in a heated throw!

Imonaplane · 01/10/2024 17:01

I'm on the South Coast, our thermostat is set to the same temperature all year round. If it gets cold enough, whatever the season, it comes on! It's been on quite a bit recently.

Boomer55 · 01/10/2024 17:02

Not on here yet. London. But I wouldn’t have it on overnight whatever the temperature. A complete waste of money.

Yes, it makes sense, but many people can't afford to put the heating on just because its' dropped below a certain temperature, so they say they'll keep it off until November (or turn it off in April) so that they "save" it for the coldest months.

JadeSeahorse · 01/10/2024 17:16

North Midlands here! Heating switched on last week.

17 during the day and 14 at night - just leave the thermostat on all the time. However, we do switch on the gas fire in the sitting room, most days at present, around 1.00pm and that stays on until we go to bed.

Can't bear to be cold and need a warm focal point in our main area.☹️

LakieLady · 01/10/2024 17:17

I've already had my heating on, I'm another under-active thyroid person and I feel cold if the room thermostat is reading below 22C.

Tumbleweed101 · 01/10/2024 17:25

Mine is on with the thermostat at 15C over night and when I'm out. At home I've had it on a couple hours here and there at 20C when it's got chilly, mainly when first getting up or first getting in from work so far.

Oldermum84 · 01/10/2024 10:19

Haha isn't it awful..another Mumsnet oddity.

I bet a lot of people who say they don't have their heating on unless it drops below 13 degrees are the same people earning £150k and saying they are "struggling" with paying their children's school fees and can only spend £500 a month on eating out.

If you're cold, put your heating on. It. Is. Not. A. Competition.

Nope. Absolutely broke & just grateful don’t need to put the heating on yet. With a10% rise in costs it might end up being longer & colder. If this is a competition then it’s clearly a race to the bottom.
